SUICIDE SILENCE’S “WAKE UP”: BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR?

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 at 12:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

I’m seriously hard-pressed to think of a cooler looking video that’s been released this year than Suicide Silence’s new clip for “Wake Up,” off No Time to Bleed – maybe the new Alice in Chains video, but that’s it. It’s awesome sober and even better high. I mean, it’s basically just a bunch of cool imagery, but that’s more than I can say for most metal videos these days.

Check it out below. It was directed by David Brodsky, in what seems to be a particularly inspired moment of maniacal glee.

Our friends at Metal Injection were on-set for the shoot and should have some behind the scenes video later this week. Stay tuned for more details.

  1. Strep Townsend says:

Too bad the “cool imagery” is extinguished by the shitty music.

  2. Agreed, coolest video I’ve seen in a long time. I wish they had picked a different song, but I definitely enjoy this.

  3. Jesse Menard says:

Not my favourite song on the album, but this is definitely a fuckin dirty video.

  4. Metal Fuckin' Dave says:

Really don’t care for this band AT ALL but I must agree about the video. In fact…gonna head home and watch this high right now.

  5. pdf says:

A good video requires a good song, and this song (this album, even) is terrible. So no thanks.

  6. Zoker says:

Awful song. I never really cared about this band, even if the hype around them is very high. I listened to the few songs on their myspace and not all of them were so bad… after listening to the piece of crap they decided to play in a video, I’ll give up on them though.

  7. Bill says:

The song does absolutely nothing for me, very boring for my tastes, but the video itself is pretty good.

  8. Charlie B says:

Meh. So its a video about someone ODing on some drugs. Whats so cool about that.

  9. i’m putting this is caps because i feel the need to

THE BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR IS FOR “OBLIVION” BY MASTODON

    • sandwiches says:

hell yes oblivion is such a great video! this suicide silence video is fucking awesome too, but goddamnit i can’t stand their music. so generic, so terrible

  10. TMR says:

Trippy colors, enjoyable while intoxicated. Other then that…meh.

  11. gnarlk says:

    simply mediocre. video. song. everything.

  12. Colin says:

I’m awake god damnet. stop yelling at me

  13. Simon says:

Video- one huge MEH… But I’m sober, so…
Song- just as the rest of their artistic work- crap.

  14. Jizzmaster3000 says:

Tell me, what does Brodsky’s asshole taste like? My guess is hackeyed.

  15. Noel says:

the music, which is still mediocre, and video is destroyed by those “yelling while I have a penis in my throut” vocals. shit, how can anyone enjoy the sound of that?

  16. timmah says:

    i lasted 39 seconds

  17. Kye says:

This CD was abysmally boring. I never really liked anything by the band, but I figured I’d give them another shot and they didn’t convince me any further.

That being said, I don’t really care about the video either. It’s decent enough, but nothing special. Looks like it was made for people that do drugs, which, given this band, seems fitting.

Bring Me the Horizon’s video(and song) for “Pray for Plagues” is infinitely better than this…and I only bring that up because after thinking for quite some time, I can’t think of another deathcore video that’s ever caught my attention. Probably because they’re all directed by the same damn guy.

  18. bearwizard says:

bah, i never bought into the whole deathcore thing. ill stick with shitty old school death metal.

  19. beardy says:

I don’t hate the new album but I do hate the lyrics…. seriously if your gonna try to do anything and tag death metal onto it, at least have some relative lyrics that are at least intresting….. “pull the trigger bitch”… nvm that isn’t gonna happen , seriously, antisuicide messages? wtf this is metal, people should be killing themselves…. thats metal, next their going to be telling us to hold doors for old ladies and to always brush our teeth, bullshit suicide silence, try something a little less lowbrow, drop some acid, shoot some cheese balls(cocaine and cheese) and then you can start talking about drugs

  20. Polska says:

    straight up shit
    im still all about divinations
after brent plays a killer solo, he actually begins killing. i see no such metalness in this video.

  21. Joe A. says:

Funny, because the thread below is titled “I GOT STUPIDER JUST WATCHING THIS”. That’s how I feel about this video.

  22. Joe A. says:

Oh… and the two Mastodon videos easily blow this to pieces.

    • BlakMetallistKrieg says:

I know, right?! How the fuck does this beat the guitar playing caveman??? Oh yeah, and Mastodon are musical geniuses while these guys sound like an amateur death metal cover band

  23. TheHardG says:

I dont see what the big deal is about this band, I mean I gave them a chance and well I cant get into them, they are to generic. I do like their name though, That is the only cool thing about them. I didnt even watch the video.
On another note, has anyone else realized that the singer looks like some reject from an emo concert?

  24. Patrick says:

    This band is awesome.
This is probably the worst track on the album, and it is repetitive. though the solo is great.
I also like the breakdown towards the end of the song.
“No Time To Bleed” is a good modern death metal/deathcore alubm.

  25. Binkles says:

Yeah, this kinda rocks…buying this cd tomorrow

  26. masterjake5000 says:

    Grand Album…..just simply grand.

Worst song on the album tho.

  27. nick says:

Boring band to watch live. The song is bland but in this context it really isn’t at all unlistenable. The video is really damn good. For far too long metal videos have just been a bunch of dudes standing around headbanging with the few obligatory shots of toilets or dirty closets.

  28. Lord Bling says:

Agreed on the Mastodon video comments. Both of those blow this away. I will admit though, that this album was a lot better than I expected, considering how bad the last one was. I’m not saying it’s great or anything, but as far as ‘deathcore’ goes, it’s better than most.

  29. derp says:

    its psychedelicore
it may be a uncreative name but
but its still better than crabcore
musically and the video is just
    trippy

  30. groverXIII says:

Wow, that song was terrible. Initially, when I first started playing the video I managed to open a link to Metal Injection and the video was playing there as well, but in a different spot… when I finally figured that out I stopped one of the video streams and didn’t actually hear much of a difference. Is that sad?

  31. sawsalldildo says:

Like this band and that video was sick too

  32. Binkles says:

Ok, now have the cd…I kinda dig it. I dont think its boring or repetitive…kept me interested and the songs are varied enough for the genre
