CANDIRIA, GENRE PIONEERS

Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 2:00pm by Vince Neilstein

Thanks to Metal Injection for buying me whiskey last night and for reminding me how cool Candiria were/are. Sure, there are some cringe-worthy rap moments in this song, but it’s not like they were following a trend — they created the trend. And mixed in with all the other genre-pushing elements of their music, it makes a whole lot more sense what Candiria were trying to do: something different. I’d love to see these guys do a show in a small club in Brooklyn some time soon; how ’bout it, guys?

very overlooked band. They get down with all styles, they will go from face smashing to straight Jazz style stuff in the blink of an eye. Very talented band even if you dont like the rap influences.

Last I heard there were only 2 active members anymore. Sad, really. We opened for them shortly before their van accident, and they were all hella nice guys.

From what I’ve heard of it, “Kiss The Lie” is a great record.

first three albums were awesome, then came their horrifying descent into utter shit.

I watched this on Metal Injection a week or so ago, and I’ve been listening to 300% Density on almost constant rotation ever since. Goddamn these guys were (are?) fucking awesome. Ken Schalk (sp?) is a supergodzillawookieekrakenkongbeast on the drums.

If you don’t like rap, you don’t like rap but Candiria’s rap moments were anything but “cringe worthy.” They were far better at it then any other band that was actually popular for it. And awesome dudes. I knew Eric, they’re old guitarist when he worked at Soundtrack here in BK, and John tends bar at Lucky 13. Brooklyn’s best they were! and sure, What Doesn’t Kill You and Kiss The Lie aren’t my favorite’s BUT the worst Candiria record is better then some band’s whole discography. LONG LIVE CANDIRIA!

I can appreciate the fact that the guy that raps actually has…you know, style and rhythym…I’d say even more so than a lot of the so-called rappers in the mainstream now. I’m not a big hip hop fan, but even I can tell when someone is on point or if they’re just pretending.

  7. “Kiss The Lie” is great, IMO. It was a shame it took SO DAMN LONG for it to get released, but at least it saw the light of day eventually. I absolutely love this band, it effin’ blows that I never got to see them play.

tbh, after listening to this band for over 10 years, i find myself coming back to their excellent hip-hop material even more than the proggy, technical metal and hardcore that they pioneered. to this day, coma imprint disc 2 is one of my favorite non-metal music releases ever…

  9. seasick says:

    even the rap moments

Candiria used to rip the shit up. Saw them w/ Hatebreed in Indy yrs ago. Some dude was in the pit w/ boxing gloves trying to kill everybody!! We easily fucked him up and had a great night. COMA!!

  11. Phil says:

    There drummer is a monster!

  12. LivetoCrush says:

i really want to see these guys tear shit up live

  13. demonstrator says:

#1 underground prog band. DEP and others in the genre owe so much to these guys.

  14. Slayer says:

Wow! I cant beleive I have never heard of this band!! They sound absolutely amazing! a little bit of rap here and there is alright… the musicianship is really tight… Kinda like heavier version of Sevendust…

Gonna download some albums right now…. Thanks MS!
