DESPISED ICON ARE THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS

DIEveryone’s favorite French Canadian deathcore band, Despised Icon, have a new song, “MVP,” currently streaming on their MySpace page. The track comes off their new album, Day of Mourning, which drops September 22 on Century.

Preliminary thoughts: it’s a somewhat less core-y song than we’re used to from DI, but, frankly, I don’t find it as distinctive as anything from 2007’s excellent The Ills of Modern Man. Still, I’m anxious to hear the whole album and see what these fellas have cooked up.

Despised Icon are crushing skulls this summer on the MetalSucks co-sponsored Thrash & Burn tour. Get dates here.

  1. Hell is just word says:

I dig this song. Sounds like the album is going to be killer.

  2. seveword says:

Why do any death metal bands pose for photos anymore? They just end up looking like they’re a) bored b) losers or c) a combination of the two, with a touch of child molester.

And since I feel somewhat obligated to talk about the music, let me do that. Instead of talking about how ridiculous the sound is, or how I’d love to see them pull this off live (without sucking), I’m gonna go with the “there is nothing unique or interesting about this band and/or song” path.

…Actually, that last line pretty much sums up everything I had to say. Yay!

    • Corpse Pus says:

They crush live. Seen ‘em three times. Well worth checking out. Super cool guys to boot.

    • yer a punkass bitch says:

seveword is drinking the haterade today.

maybe you should stick to your opinions of band photos, since you’re obviously delusional and never had the pleasure of seeing DI live.

  3. dadez25 says:

    Brutal song

  4. Sammy says:

“Hey, let’s all wear black unreadable logo tee-shirts, but man, you drew the short straw, so you hafta wear the polo shirt, Dockers and dress watch.”

  5. Lord Bling says:

If their drummer can play that song without triggers, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.

    • trigger retard says:

well, you actually have to play a drum part even if you use triggers, or else there would be no vibrations for the triggers to recognize, thus not creating any sound, douche.

      • ceth says:

half of the people that talk about triggers dont even seem to know what they really are. I always say that to people, the drummer still has to play the part. It’s not always as pleasing of a sound as straight drums because processed drums always lack a bit of the human feel to it but the triggers allow a lot more precision to the machine gun fast parts. The guy still has to play it. i wish people would understand that. It’s like people think trigers play the part for them and all you have to do is just hit the kick drum everyonce in a while and it does it all for you.

    • Yeah, the tempo is super fast, it winds up sounding like a deathcore Agoraphobic Nosebleed most of the time. There’s some really complicated playing here, good track.

  6. i like these guys. they aren’t reinventing the wheel by any means, but they put out solid, mindless metal that’s fun to bob your head to while going about your day. the new stuff sounds rockin’

    have a pleasant day

    • Nate L. says:

i know you’re being positive, but please don’t call it mindless lol

      • Dr. J says:

This is mindless, man. You can’t sit here and tell me Despised Icon are putting out deep, thought provoking music. It’s pounding death metal played to be brutal and fast.

  7. jason says:

Why are Canadians so goofy looking?

  8. The Goat says:

NU-DEATHCORE IS A DISGRACE TO DEATH METAL!!! THIS ABND IS NO HEAVIER OR MORE METAL THAN DISTURBED!!!!

    • Siv says:

Explain further please because last I checked they are quite a bit heavier than Disturbed.

    • Nick says:

CAPS MAKE MY POINT MORE VALID. He won’t be able to explain further… he’ll say the moronic genre-tag again and say it sucks. He’ll not make any mentions of the music itself in any knowledgable fashion to try to explain his point. While it’s fine to dislike this band obviously as it is a subjective thing… i have a feeling he’s a moron.

    wigger slam

  10. razorsharp codpiece says:

This song is fucking dope. I’ve always liked DI, but this is a step up for them. I’m real psyched for the record, especially after seeing the studio updates. Obviously the drums are triggered, and I bet they trigger them live as well, but their drummer is a beast, he can absolutely handle playing these parts trigger free, but I’m sure the consistancy wouldn’t be quite the same.

  11. big_red01027 says:

The Ills of Modern Man was excellent and had distinctive-sounding songs?

The Healing Process was way better. Better riffs, better production, better triggered drums.

  12. Nate L. says:

HOLY SHIT I KNOW THERE’S ONLY ONE MAIN BREAKDOWN (hence: “less core-y”) BUT THE BUILD-UP IS SO SWEET AND THE CLIMAX IS HOLY-SHIT-AWESOME.

    Yes. Win.

    VERY pumped for this album.

  13. Sandwiches says:

One of the only deathcore bands I like. Pretty stoked on this. Also, their drummer used to play for neuraxis so he is certainly no slouch. He’s played nearly flawlessly both times I saw them. He put beneath the massacres drummer to shame.

  14. Patrick says:

Suicide Silence rights better riffs and better songs.
“Any song off of “No Time To Bleed” is better then this song.
(well…”Wake Up” is weak but thats besides the point)

  15. Patrick says:

Sorry..I kind of free prey to everyone else and dished out hate.
I meant to say that its all good if you like this band. They are decent, and competent and quality.

I meant to say that if you listen though and love it and then say stuff like i hate deathcore, and think that suicide silence is more generic, or less talented then this band then you are biased and you have bought into the “SS is blowing up and have shirts in Hot topic so I cant like them” idea.

I just wish people would listen with an open mind. They are actually, comparatively to all of the other modern deathcore bands, a very unique sounding and talented band.

  16. Dr. J says:

Did anyone look up the lyrics? Here’s a choice gem:

Oh, baby don’t you know this partys picking up.
You be a classy looking hoe.
Girl, I promise that I’ll be gentle and take it slow.
Put this thick member in your mouth and start to blow.

I’ll assume it’s a joke. The music is very solid otherwise. I’ve never been a fan of these guys, but I’m really digging this song.
