This is Phil Anselmo performing Alice in Chains’ “Nutshell” in Tel Aviv.

And… that’s all I have to say about this.

    SHUT UP!

    that was cool

  2. Chimp-0-Neg says:

I’m all for it in principle. But, Phil shoulda learned how to play the tune first.

  3. Sammy says:

When Adema’s version of a song is better than yours, it’s time to go a different direction.

  4. Hardcorebob says:

Stick to what you know Phil. This version sucks.

  5. Metal Fuckin' Dave says:

I have failed to hate this. Don’t know why…seemed he played it with a lot of feeling. Or that could be what trying to fend off withdraws looks like.

  6. Fuck You Haters says:

Look I know I’ll be burned for this but I don’t care. The body of work Phil and the rest of Pantera have done, in my opinion, should afford any of the surviving members carte blanc to do whatever they fucking want to. When Pantera (with Phil) came on the scene they fucking killed it. Redneck comments, drug addictions, in-fighting and egos aside, not a single band in that generation has done so much for metal culture. Their sound was original, their attitude undisputed and their impact undeniable. Give Phil a break he’s paid his dues and besides it’s not about taking someone elses song and making it better. It’s about taking someone elses song and sharing it intimately with a small audience. Conveying a feeling.

    • Sammy says:

Well yeah, I agree, Phil and his ex-bandmates have earned the right to try anything. But not without criticism. This truly sucked. But to be fair, if I’m not mistaken at the beginning of the song Anselmo invites the crowd to please sing along, giving one the impression he himself wasn’t too confident about it.

    • Kyle says:

Pretty sure Pantera just ripped off their sound from Exhorder so I don’t know how original they were, but they certainly did rock.

      • Fuck You Haters says:

Hey Kyle, I agree with you to the degree that at that point in metal history (and still to this day) few bands are 100% original. What I am saying is when they came back out with Phil they turned on an entire generation of kids to extreme metal without compromising. On their shoulders rest major accomplishment. In this video it’s evident Phil knows he ain’t got it buttoned up, he was doing for the love of it. and in my opinion it’s awesome to see a musician step out of their comfort zone and dare to fail.

        • Kyle says:

I agree. I love Pantera and they were a big part of me getting into metal when I was a kid.. And despite whatever influence Exhorder had on their sound, Pantera was certainly 10 times the band. Perhaps “ripped off” was a poor choice of words!

          • Lord Bling says:

To me, Exhorder’s ‘The Law’ has held up better than most Pantera records. Not all, but most.

  7. \nn/ says:

Well this is almost as awful as the Superjoint shit. I hope the 4th Down album coming up will make me forget this, because it’s kinda embarrassing for Phil.

  8. big_red01027 says:

It’s not too bad, I guess. The second verse is pretty rough though.

  9. sandedfaceless says:

Hell, at least he got up there and gave it a shot. I think it was cool, if not awe-inspiring from a guitar-playing standpoint. It looked like a small, intimate venue, I would have loved to have been there to see it. What do you expect? He’s not Jerry Cantrell, and this wasn’t the filming of Alice in Chains Unplugged…

  10. stu1 says:

Dude’s sitting in a small bar, probably in front of a handful of people. This was probably an impromptu thing. Who gives a fuck if its bad. Jesus.

  11. Cat Tyrson says:

Sorry. Love Dime. Love Pantera. But Phil… This fucking sucks.

  12. jason says:

What, no antisemitic remarks in the stage banter? This is surely an imposter.

    • Fuck You Haters says:

jason, anti semitism and racial slurs are what make this country great. Its called free speech. Have you heard of it?

  13. You Don't Know Me says:

Not bad. The little lead parts he did in there ruined it though. It kind of reminded me of the “I Believe…” thing from Blue Collar Comedy Tour. I half expected to see Phil go into one of those jokes when he did that. The video quality sucks so it’s hard to truly judge it but I thought overall it was a decent cover.

  14. Michael says:

With Pantera as my all time favorite band and AIC high up with my favorites, this isn’t exactly gold. Still, singing anything by Layne is a tall task. His voice is immediately discernible and unique. I give Phil respect for trying and doing what he does. Nutshell is a song I’d like to cover myself at a small place like that. Props, even if it wasn’t that great.

  15. Chimp-0-Neg says:

But then there’s this which does make up for it:-

Phil is fucking awesome, it’s just that this time the perfromance didnt come over well.

  16. Facebook User says:

Cool stuff.. Except for those howling jackasses.

  17. chad says:

O.k well, I have to say ive been a huge Pantera fan for 17 years now, I must say respectably that he sounded like shit but ill give him credit for singing a great song, On the other hand Phil In my opinion did a GREAT job at sing “WOULD” (Alice n Chains) the deepness is Phils positive when he sings high pitch like this hes not so great unless he’s wailing like old school pantera glam days.
