THIS ONE SHOULD BE INTERESTING: SCAR SYMMETRY READY NEW ALBUM

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 at 11:30am by Vince Neilstein

scar symmetryMetal Injection’s Frank Godla once referred to Scar Symmetry’s brand of heavily poppified melodic Swedish death metal as “Death Jovi,” and it may be the single most brilliant thing he’s ever said. Not that Death Jovi is meant as an insult; it’s meant as the absolute highest compliment, a testament to both the band’s unbelievable chops and their penchant for writing giant, humongous, tremendous, monster-sized hooks.

So it was with great sadness that we reported the departure of vocalist Christian Alvestam from the band last September, and with curiosity only a month later that we reported his role his been filled by two new guys: Roberth Karlsson on “lead growl vocals” and “backing clean vocals” and Lars Palmqvist on “lead clean vocals” and “backing growl vocals.” While I lamented the loss of Alvestam unique voice, I figured better for two guys to get it right than one guy to get it wrong. And naturally, I wondered how involved Alvestam was in the writing of Scar Symmetry’s ” The Jersey Shawww of Sweden” singalongs.

Nuclear Blast’s European webstore is now reporting October 2nd as a release date for a new Scar Symmetry record called Dark Matter Dimensions, and SS’s Wikipedia page is reporting October 10 as a U.S. release date (source unconfirmed).

Will Karlsson and Palmqvist be able to fill Alvestam’s giant-sized vocal shoes? Will the quality of the songwriting be diminished? Will new Scar Symmetry music give me the same raging boner their past material has? My guess is we’ll find out in about a month when the band starts to unleash some new material.

Holographic Universe was awesome, especially the title track, so if they come anywhere close, I will be pleased.

    • Watty says:

Yeah, that was an amazing album. Too bad Christian left, it’ll be nice to see how the new vocalists the picked up do in emulating his style…

    • Rik says:

Yeah the title track is epic, the rest of the album was a bit disappointing in my opinion but that track makes up for it.

      • Unholy Vortex says:

Are you out of your freaking mind?! all that album is Magic! One of this millenium’s master pieces!

    In before DeathJovi-core…oh, wait…damnit!

  3. IT IS BECAUSE OF BANDS LIKE THIS THAT I MUST DECREE:

    FUCK SWEDEN.

    christian ruled….

    this band blows w/o him

  5. I’m really curious about the new stuff. This was a really solid band with Christian. Hopefully the new guys are up to the task.

  6. Cavorka says:

I saw them live a couple of months ago, and I have to admit that the clean vocals sounded weak!

Pretty cool though that they have a new album ready hardly 1.5 years after HU!

  7. Ballhair says:

Scar Symmetry is one of my favorite bands and Christian is one of my favorite frontmen, so I was bummed when he left the band. He’s in a new band called Solution .45, and from what I heard it sounds pretty damn similar to SS. But hell, that’s now 2 wicked albums to look forward to instead of 1.

  8. DemonicLemming says:

I’ll be waiting to see what it’s like. Their previous three albums were all damned good (even if the production between the three varied wildly), and I’m still undecided on two singers to replace one.

  9. Elpants says:

I have high hopes for a new album, I felt Holographic was too heavy on the clean vocals. It was a good album nevertheless.

However, their new guy behind the harsh vocals is fuckin ace. His vocals with Pan.Thy.Monium and Edge of Sanity are masterpieces.

  10. groverXIII says:

Well, I’m definitely interested to see how this goes. Can two guys replace one monstrously awesome singer? We shall see…

  11. d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n. says:

From what I’ve heard, Jonas did most of the songwriting, so I’m fairly sure there won’t be any great decline in that department. I’m curious to hear what the new vocalists are capable of.

  12. TMR says:

    FUCK YEA!!!

The wait has been too long!

I’m dying to hear how they’re gonna sound with two vocalists, I’ve heard the new guys are Fucking Brutal !!!!! cant wait any longer!

One month away… fuck that’s still too long!!!

  13. Strep Townsend says:

I think that Scar Symmetry is about to hit it’s stride now that they got some new blood, Christian is becoming a second rate Tomas Lindberg with Miseration, Solution 45 and the other 628916882 bands he is in.

  14. Anthony says:

Is it just me, or is saying “Melodic Death metal band from Sweden” a lot like saying “NHL player from Canada”?

  15. Unholy Vortex says:

They sound pretty well with the new guys…. but I think that the singing guy sounds like a power metal frontman! my opinion!

  16. Mitchell says:

Been meaning to check out this band for awhile now.. might have to give this and the last album a download!

  17. bearwizard says:

HEY GUYS DID YOU KNOW THAT RICHARD DAWKINS READS THIS SITE AND HE HATES SWEDEN?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
