ANOTHER LIST TO ARGUE ABOUT (DON’T WORRY, WE DIDN’T MAKE THIS ONE)

Our friends at SMN tell us that the folks at AOL Radio have compiled a list of the “10 Best Death Metal Bands” (note the lack of the phrase “of all time,” so, uh, yeah). I don’t think I can get behind any such list that includes Six Feet Under but not Carcass; that being said, the other nine bands that did make the cut are all good bands, even if I’m not sure if they deserve a spot on the list.

Also, they selected each band’s “best album,” and I almost universally disagree with all of their choices (and please note that I said “almost” before you flip your shit).

Go here to check it out, debate about whether or not all of the bands are really death metal or not, etc. Or, better yet, just fight with one another about it in our comments section below. It amuses us.

I agree, some good choices, but not all are Death – needless to say!
I think Suffo’s Despise the Sun was their best! And Death’s Human was their too.

AOL ‘s sorry attempt to make this a pop-cultural thing

    • http://www.roxwel.com Pick-Axe Bobby

Agreed about Death. Human is best.

      • sYgnal

Sorry, I have to disagree.. “Human” was great & “Symbolic” really opened up Death Metal to a new sub-genre (Melodic) BUT “Individual Thought Patterns” was their Opus Magnum where the experimentation & fusion of styles blended perfectly with their passion, technical musicianship & proficient song writing skills. And, it was fucking intense. Plus, the personnel that Chuck hired – Let’s not forget Andy LaRocque…Whoa. Talk about a “Super Group”

        • Lord Bling

Sound of Perserverance, anyone? Although I’d probably agree with the OP. Human is still the first album of theirs that I reach for.

And wow on this whole album selection. It’s wrong on so many levels. ‘Bloodthirst’ by CC? Probably their worst. ‘Gateways to Annihilation’ by MA? How about ‘Blessed are the Sick’ or ‘Domination’? ‘Twilight of the Thunder God’ by AA? Are they fucking serious? No one in their right mind would pick that over ‘With Oden’. And ‘Ithyphallic’ by Nile is boring.

          • Tommy Lindbergsen

Nile is boring but Hatebreed should be on the list?
That is completely backwards especially since Hatebreed is hardcore and sucks balls.

          • Lord Bling

Hatebreed has an album called ‘Perseverance’. Death has an album called ‘The Sound of Perseverance.’ Learn 2 Google.

Also, I think ‘Annihilation of the Wicked’ is one of my favorite Nile albums ever. Compared to that, I find ‘Ithyphallic’ boring and predictable. But hey, that’s just me.

    • Biff Tannen

Agreed. “Despise The Sun” is the best Suffocation. 16 minutes of pure win.
Also, Death’s “Human” is my favorite. Its the perfect mix of their primitive beginnings and the tech metal they would eventually become.

  • John

My head exploded as soon as I saw SFU above Suffocation.

  • Timothy Plague

    Stupid fucking list…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Quinn/1197379400 Paul Quinn

I’ll just make the points about the bands I’m more knowledgeable on:

-Death Rituals was nothing spectacular, but also in the same vein as nothing SFU do is spectacular. The fact that this band takes up space on this list or my iPod makes little sense….to anyone….especially me.

-In Shadows and Dust was not that good an album. But then again, Kataklysm annoy me, as good as they are live. Either way, I dunno if they belong on this list either.

-Amon Amarth probably don’t belong on this list but Twilight of the Thunder God absolutely does not. Maybe AOL picked it because people see Twilight and think Vampires and kewlness….who the fuck knows. Versus the World is THE definitive Amon album.

    -Bloodthirst. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

-Although open to debate, I have to say that I think Death saved the best for last, sadly. Sound of Perseverance all the way. But at least they got Death right at the top of the list.

Most of the other bands I know but am not well versed enough in to defend/argue/whatever.

    PS – I <3 Lists

    • lolwut

the avenger is the definitive AA album sir VtW is close 2nd though doesnt get all the hype about nile sure i listen(ed) to them but there so much hype behind them there drummers bass foot swivvel shit is exactly what it is shit

      H H>G K

  • http://www.thedevilsdemons.com vincent p

    No Carcass, no list.

  • ben

How the fuck is Gateways Morbid Angel’s best album?

    • ‘lil billy

      Exactly my thoughts.

    • Tanner

and Covenant isn’t the best selling death metal album in the U.S. Its The Bleeding from Cannibal Corpse. SFU…. but no obituary, deicide, no carcass? Shit list

      • Biff Tannen

your name is confusing to people on here. you are probably going to start getting hate posts when they were meant for me. Better take corrective action, guy.

    • Tommy Lindbergsen

It should have been Blessed are the Sick obviously.

      • Lord Bling

        Totally. Or Domination or Covenant.

How about Entombed’s ‘Left Hand Path’? Or Obituary’s ‘Cause of Death’? Or Carcass’s ‘Necrotism’?

  • big_red01027

Suffocation and Nile should be higher.

  • John

I wouldnt consider amon amarth a death metal band the same way i would consider suffocation and cannibal corpse death metal i thought they were more melodic death metal but metal genres being such a fucking mess these days i guess its hard to categorize

  • http://www.theinevitablenose.com/ The Inevitable Nose

Yes indeed, the lack of Carcass here is perplexing.

  • Gallo

Not really dissapointed about No 1, I think that is the only clever choice.

Selecting that bullshit album from Cannibal Corpse was a total fail, how do you that when there are such mindblowers like The Bleeding and Tomb of the Mutilated??

Same with Morbid Angel, haven`t you heard fucking Covenant????!!!

Besides Carcass, Benediction`s The Dreams You Dread, Sepultura`s Beneath the Remains and Hypocrisy`s osculum Obscenum should have made to the list.

    fucking retarded list

    • Lord Bling

I would even make a case for ‘Kill’. Best thing CC has done in a long time. But yeah, ‘The Bleeding’ or ‘Tomb’ WAY ahead of ‘Bloodthirst’.

    • Biff Tannen

“Beneath The Remains” ?? uhhh…..Im about 99% sure that album belongs in the top 5 THRASH albums of all time, but it is certainly not death metal.

  • ***

I can kind of understand why SFU is on there (because of Chris Barnes), but there is no way in hell their best album is Death rituals, it’s awful and I actually like a lot of their stuff. And how they managed to beat Carcass, Deicide, Cryptopsy among others. Although a majority of the bands on there are good, I don’t really see a lot of them as greatest death metal bands. And the “best” album selection is just off in places, most fans of these bands would agree I’m sure.

  • http://ultimateposerblog.blogspot.com Ultimate Poser Blog

    I have a better list

    1. Dark Tranquillity – The Gallery
    2. Death – Symbolic
    3. Morbid Angel – Blessed Are the Sick
    4. Dismember – Like an Everflowing Stream
    5. Suffocation – Pierced From Within
    6. Bolt Thrower – For Victory
    7. Opeth – Still life
    8. Carcass – Necrotism
    9. Arch Enemy – Rise of the Tyrant
    10. Atheist – Elements

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Quinn/1197379400 Paul Quinn

Putting DT over Death insures us of one thing – you like penis.

      • http://ultimateposerblog.blogspot.com Ultimate Poser Blog

These were in no particular order

    • aud10ph1le44

      ^ Arch Enemy = Fail.

I don’t think Six Feet Under would make my top 25.

Not including Carcass is a faux pas of epic proportions.

But at least Bloodbath is there, and Nightmares Made Flesh is a great choice, though regrettable considering it lacks Akerfeldt’s magic touch. And I don’t think I would rate Amon Amarth higher than them.

      • http://ultimateposerblog.blogspot.com Ultimate Poser Blog

I don’t get the hate for Arch Enemy and I don’t think that I ever will. In fact, the only list that I’m going to put anything in a specific order for is the top 100 albums of the decade. So far my list only has 87 albums on it and I only have the top 5 in order.

        • Biff Tannen

the hate for Arch Enemy comes from the fact that they are ‘vanilla’. Middle of the road, un-offensive by the numbers melo-death. They are competant at what they do, but there is nothing about them that sticks out or makes them memorable, besides the German she-male singer.

    • Tommy Lindbergsen

Dark Tranquillity, Opeth and Arch Enemy have no place on this list.

  • Tim

Almost as bad as your Top 21 album list. Almost.

  • Ziltoid

Any best of list with SFU on it is instant fail. To make it worse, the rest were mostly bad choices (horribly average bands like Nile, Kataklysm, CC, AA, etc.), and whenever they chose a good artist (Suffo, Death, Morbid Angel), they chose either average albums, or bad albums. Another shitty list, what a shock.

    This list needs more…

    GHOULS
    ATTACK THE CHURCH
    CRUSH
    THE HOLY PRIEST
    etc etc etc

    • Biff Tannen

Ziltoid hit the nail on the head again. Now everything I was going to say is redundant.

Dead – your god is dead
Fools – your god is dead
      Useless prayers of lies
      Behold satan’s rise !!!

      how bout…

      Whips crack
      Centurians might be known
      Christians standing breathless
      Circus victims panic struck
      Scream Arena butchery
Where is their god as the
      Faithful meet their end?

      KILL THEM ALL !!!
KILL THEM ALL FOR SPLENDOR !!!
KILL THEM ALL, AND MUTE THEIR WAYS !!

  • BlakMetallistKrieg

NIIIILLLLEEEE!!! Arguably the heaviest band ever. But Kataklysm are nothing special to me, and neither is SFU. I totally agree that Carcass’ absence is stupid.

    • Tommy Lindbergsen

Shadows and Dust was a great album from them, though not worthy of making this list.

  • metalguy

CARCASS kills all! ilike SFU but they no way deserve to be in a top 30 death metal bands

  • key

    Kataklysm.

Errr. Yeah. Sure. Just go back to sending everyone internet cd’s in the mail please AOL.

  • boofuckinhoo

Fuck yeah,Death is number 1,its bullshit carcass isnt on their though.

Cannibal Corpse Number 2? No no no..No way that shit is better then bloodbath

FAIL (except death being number 1. =] )

  • mr lun

    no obituary=enormous fail

    • http://ultimateposerblog.blogspot.com Ultimate Poser Blog

Obituary = enourmous fail (except for Ralph Santola even though he was better in Deicide) One thing that Obituary can always be counted on for making generic, cookie cutter death metal.

      • Attic

I really like Slowly We Rot, but don’t care for much of anything else they’ve put out.

  • Angelo

    Death fucking rules.
    fuck who don’t agree.

they deserve to be on top of every death metal lists.
And even in metal category they are right there on the first places.

    - Metallica
    - Megadeth
    - Destruction
    - Venom
    - Judas Priest
    - Pantera
    - Death
    - Manowar
    - Katatonia
    - Pitch Black
    - Dream Theater

the best of the bests for me

    • Attic

I can’t help but feel a tad insulted about Death being below Metallica and Pantera

  • http://lordsofmetal.nl/index.php?lang=en Cavorka

That list needs some Hypocrisy, Penetralia is an instant death metal classic!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/-/676756844 Мирослав Денковски

Pierced From Within is in the right place, it’s the best Suffo album… Six Vomits Under (i mean wtf), Nile mmmmmh… Annihilation of The Wicked of course, not Ithyphallic. I never liked Kataklysm soooo, i’ll skip that one, Nightmare Made Flesh is one hell of a death metal album. Vader’s Art Of War is EP, why did they put it on the list… Litany is the best Vader album (for me). If I could I’ll put Morbid Angel’s Domination on the list and Bleeding. And fuck Amon Amarth…

And for the first place Human (it has the dream metal members for me. Chuck, Reinert, Masvidal and DiGiorgio.) Damn… Too bad Chuck’s dead…

About this list, if I made one, it’ll contain at least 6-7 different albums. But that’s just me :)

  • lkgf09

    complete joke of a list.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Campagna/40702766 Tom Campagna

My favs in no particular order are
    Carcass – Heartwork
    Death – Individual Thought Patterns
    Obituary – Cause Of Death
    Deicide – Deicide
At The Gates – Slaughter Of The Soul
    Atheist – Unquestionable Presence
    Autopsy – Mental Funeral
Suffocation – Effigy Of The Forgotten
Morbid Angel – Altars Of Madness
Lest we forget the other greats like Bolt Thrower, Massacre, Grave among others

    • Tommy Lindbergsen

Grave are DM vets and should be on this list along with Immolation, Vomitory and The Crown.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Campagna/40702766 Tom Campagna

ah the crown i do like the burning quite a bit forgot dismember and unlashed too

        • Lord Bling

          Motherfucking Bolt Thrower!

I’d pick ‘Necrotism’ over ‘Heartwork’, and ‘Blessed are the Sick’ over ‘Altars of Madness’ but that’s just me. Otherwise, I’m down with your list.

    • sYgnal

Nice list… Though, unfortunately, the Death Metal scene is starting to bore me and it is quite sad that we have to revisit the classics to find anything worth listening to (again).

      Let’s not forget Pestilence,Sadist,Brujeria,Entombed, Paradise Lost,Malevolent Creation.

  • bearwizard

whos the retarded motherfucker that thought six feet under dont suck

  • Sylvester

    That list is Seriously flawed…

    Here’s a better one.
    No Particular order.

    Suffocation-Pierced From Within
    Death-Human
    Carcass-Necroticism
    Cannibal Corpse-Tomb Of The Mutilated
    Morbid Angel-Blessed Are The Sick
    Obituary-Cause Of Death
Napalm Death-Fear, Emptiness Despair (I know I’ll get shit for this one. I like all of Napalm’s albums, this one just happened to speak to me in a different way than their other stuff. The obvious choice would be Scum.)
At The Gates-Slaughter Of The Soul
    Cephalic Carnage-Lucid Interval
    Cryptopsy-None So Vile

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Campagna/40702766 Tom Campagna

kudos on those i need to get some cephalic carnage of which i own none, love necroticism, and fear emptiness despair might also happen to be one of the heaviest albums i’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to

  • tc7005

Cannibal Corpse “The Bleeding” should be #1. They define death metal for me. Cryptopsy “None So Vile” is #2. This list is definitely missing Dismember “Like an Ever Flowing Stream” and Entombed “Left Hand Path” too. Am glad they included Nile, Vader, and Bloodbath on the list. Would be nice to sneak Dying Fetus “Destroy the Opposition” on there too.

Anyways, I agree that the best albums picked are really messed up.

    • tc7005

And Suffocation is always a good, solid pick. They did get it right that “Pierced From Within” is their best, like it just a bit more than Effigy of the Forgotten.

  • Captain wookie

Well the list is by AOL so no matter what its going to suck. I mean hell they couldn’t even do the thing they are supposed to do right, why would we think they could create a halfway decent Death Metal list. Granted there are some good choices here for bands, but these are all bands that anyone who has some idea on what death metal is could really assemble (with a few exceptions). While the albums, no way. One possible idea behind this would be ‘active’ but there brings in the Death issue but any best death metal list without death has absolutely no credibility. In closing, AOL is a bunch of fucktards but i thought we already knew that?

  • mike

42 replies and not one mention of the almighty Decapitated.

  • Kosmas

    This list is hilarious.
I agrre with AR.There are some great bands that aren’t mentioned and
those that are mentioned album choice is horrible !
Amon Amarth have at least 3-4 albums better than that one and we shouldn’t
forget that they aren’t a completely death metal band.
SFU’s album choice is bad too.One of the first three albums would do.
Vader and Bloodbath and not Entombed and Bolt thrower ?

  • iolanach

Better then your “Best albums of the 21st century” list, that’s for sure.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dru-Morrison/1641060092 Dru Morrison

By all means this list is a complete failure (once again, Carcass ladies and gentlemen… Carcass), but though the list itself is bad, it no way compares to how fucking terrible the “Album Highlights” were. Holy Shit! Bloodthirst over Tomb, Gateways over Covenant or Altars, Twilight over Oden, Ithyphallic over Catacombs, fucking Pierced over Effigy! Maybe my picks for these bands’ highlights are somewhat conservative, but AOL’s picks are fucking ridiculously random and unfounded.

    • Attic

Bloodthirst is a damn good album and stands up excellently to Tomb, same thing with Pierced and Effigy. Otherwise though, yeah.

At least they got the best Vader album right though (even if that is an EP and not techincally an album).

      • Biff Tannen

you think ‘the art of war’ is the best Vader?? Huh?? have you not heard “Litany” ??? how about “De Profundis” ????

        Get with the program!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Campagna/40702766 Tom Campagna

and i missed yet another. left hand path anybody?

  • http://danielldean10@yahoo.com Danno

It’s nice to see that bloodbath made the list. i think they have the most potential of any of the other bands, in the future. I really would have liked to see deiced somewhere. left hand path, yes. whitechapel, anybody?

  • Motoghost

In that list I only agree with 2 of their picks and those are the numbers 1 and 2 spots. Death and CC are legendary and have done/do so much for Death Metal. And in response to Danno, Whitechapel? I hope that’s a bad joke, because Whitechapel is the worst example of any type of metal band. I mean you have your right to your opinion, but to me the only groups I have less respect for are Winds of Plague, Psychostick, and all the other mediocre crap in music today.

  • Austin

    1. Death – Symbolic (insert favourite Death album)
    2. Morbid Angel – Altars of Madness
    3. Carcass – Heartwork (way to create two subgenres of metal guys! Bill Steer = godfather of Grindcore & Melodeath)
    4. Nile – In Their Darkened Shrines
    5. Deicide – s/t
    6. Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten (way to make death metal super br00tal guys!)
    7. Obituary – Cause of Death
    8. At the Gates – Slaughter of the Soul (tough to comment on the bands’ career as a whole since Slaughter so grossly overshadows everything else they did, but since that is THE melodeath album of all melodeath albums, they deserve this place)
    9. Cannibal Corpse – Tomb of the Mutilated (a tough band to place on this list because some people really love these guys and others not so much. Still, they are definitely one of the most well-known death metal bands and deservedly so, I guess)
    10. Entombed – Left Hand Path

*Note* If one considers Possessed to be a death metal band then they are placed at #6 for creating the genre and all other bands are bumbed down a number

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kim-Kelly/10515129 Kim Kelly

They left out Nihilist. That in and of itself renders this list utterly invalid.

  • cityofchampions

Broken Hope anyone? There brutal as shit back in the day.

  • Anthony

Maybe it’s because i’m Canadian, but Kataklysm is the best band on that list.

Shadows and Dust…not so much though.

  • http://www.kingdomofnoise.blogspot.com MetalMatt

SFU? What? Besides their best album was Haunted.
I love Amon Amarth, but they’re not death metal.

I need to listen to more of the rest of them. I have lots of CC but I came late to the death metal party.
