Maybe I’m alone in this, but I found Anvil! The Story of Anvil to be kinda depressing. 50-something year old dudes, holding onto their dream, still hoping to get signed to a major label and strike it rich as big rock stars? Yeah, I have my own impossible pipe dreams to worry about, thank you very much.

Still, that’s not to say that it wasn’t an awesome movie, and funny as often as it was sad. Also, gots to support my fellow Jews in metal.

So. In case you didn’t get to check out Anvil! The Story of Anvil in theaters, it hits DVD on October 6, and will air on both VH1 and VH1 Classic on Saturday, October 3rd at 9:00 pm. You should definitely check it out.

If you’re gonna buy/rent the DVD, here are the special features you have to look forward to:

  • Half hour interview with Lars Ulrich On Anvil
  • Director & Anvil Commentary Track
  • Former Band Members Interviews
  • Deleted scenes

Apparently more special features will be announced soon. Personally, I’m just dying to see what Ulrich has to say about the band.

agreed this movie was really really good, but being a musician who knows that making a “living” out of it is not going to happen, this movie really hits home. If you havn’t seen it you should but just keep in mind that it isnt always going to be the shits and giggles of most band documentary.

    • Aaron R A

It’s actually not that difficult to make a living out of playing music, depending on the style of music you play. May not be a comfortable living, but it pays the bills.

  • John

My friends dad actually has an anvil vinyl.

    • Biff Tannen

is that supposed to be ironic? I have Anvil vinyl as well. They are fucking great. Where the hell have you been?

      • Metal Fuckin’ Dave

Haha, thats what I was saying. What do you mean by “actually”. I have Metal on Metal on Vinyl and later bought it on CD. But the vinyl sounds better, as usual.

  • Fink

At this point, I find it hard to call “hoping to get signed to a major label and strike it rich as big rock stars” an “impossible pipe dream”; due to this documentary, these guys have gotten a ton of exposure. I mean, they’re playing two arena shows with AC/DC. Nothing depressing about that…

    • stu1

That’s a “happy ending” if you will, but they’re never going to “strike it rich” or anything like that.

      • Fink

I mean…. I guess. You don’t think they’re making any money off said shows, royalties off the documentary, general exposure, etc?

        • stu1

          More than they were? Yeah.

  • Motoghost

Honestly I’ve had enough with Anvil. I’m sick of them getting everybody and their mother’s press coverage, they made a movie. Good for them, now get over it.

  • Brutalizer

I also found the movie quite depressing. Poor guys.

  • Ziltoid

I’m tired of all the Anvil coverage as well. If the story is real enough (you know how they add extra things to make movies more palatable), then good for them for finally getting success. But their music isn’t impressive at all. Kinda boring tbqh. Why not also make a movie about Slauter Xstroyes? They’re an obscure heavy metal band that released an album (Winter Kill) in the late 80s filled with prog influenecs, yet retained the heavy metal foundation, along with a really good and mildly evil sounding vocalist (similar to King Diamond IMO). Then they recorded another album (Free the Beast), but it got shelved for 10 years and was finally released in 1998, which surpassed Winter Kill. Why don’t they get a movie as well?

If your aforementioned retardedly named band can have the same chemistry on screen as the Anvil dudes, then I will watch that movie. But I don’t really see that happening, as five dudes on a Encyclopaedia Metallum forum do not constitute a high level of demand.

      • Ziltoid

I would never go to the M-A forums. Those are awful.

    • bucketochicken

Get a camera, call those dudes up, and get started. They sound pretty cool-ish, actually. You’re young and ambitious; make it happen.

  • crank

30 minutes of Lars Ulrich talking is not a selling point of any DVD. I would not advertise this, more of an Easter egg, but the egg is full of shit.

    • Glenn

I wonder what *anyone* could say about Anvil for 30 minutes…

  • chase

    depressing as hell movie

Good for them to get some exposure. I rock out to “Metal on Metal”.

  • moose_knuckle

It is a very well made film , i did find a lot of it to be quite depressing but it does have a fair few spinal tap moments. Worth watching

  • Dutchguy

I bought the steelbook version that HMV released in the UK. Very, very metal indeed.

  • http://www.welovemetal.com We Love Metal

An amazing movie. Critics can say what they want, but these guys got lost in the shuffle and their finally getting their due. If him catering food around for kids wasn’t real I don’t know what is.

  • MacDuff

The DVD is already out over here,I was going to buy it a few weeks ago but got something else instead.
