EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SERA TIMMS OF BLACK MATH HORSEMAN

Black Math Horseman have been around a relatively short while, but have quickly risen to prominence. With Wyllt, the band’s Scott Reeder produced/MetalSucks approved debut, they’ve created a subtle space of OG-psychedelicambience and post-/doom metal riffs and crescendos.

A big part of the band’s distinctiveness is vocalist Sera Timms’ droning voice, occasionally veering over to screaming but usually sticking to singing. In an email interview Sera was kind enough to grant us, she eloquently discusses the origins of Wyllt, working with Scott Reeder, and the current climate of music in the twilight of the record industry.

EXCLUSIVE WORLD PREMIER: DAATH’S NEW VIDEO FOR “DAY OF ENDLESS LIGHT”

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 at 1:00pm by

Raise your hand if you’ve listened to Daath’s new record The Concealers. Through my telepathic e-screen abilities I know that there are not nearly enough hands in the air right now, because a) you’re not stupid enough to actually raise your hands because an Interweb article said said so, b) your hands are probably on your dicks at the moment as you wait for that p0rn torrent to finish downloading, c) not nearly e-fucking-nough of you have heard this ridiculously great record! Like, seriously, The Concealers has quite possibly gotten the most spins on my iPod in the past few months, right up there with Earthsblood and Crack the Skye. It’s silly good!

So when the band came to us and asked us to host the world premier of their new music video for “Day of Endless Light,” we were more than happy to oblige. The track is one of the heavier and faster tracks on The Concealers but it’s still got that swaggery Daath groove. The video was directed and animated by Robin Fuller. Check it out below.

Also check out the fan-made video for the track “Duststorm,” guitarist Eyal Levi’s MetalSucks column Jumping Darkness Parade and our interview with Eyal from a couple of months back. And of course, don’t forget to catch Daath with Goatwhore, Abigail Williams, Abysmal Dawn and Success Will Write Apocalypse Across the Sky, on tour in the U.S. now! We’re giving away one free ticket to each tour date.

KING OF AKITAS

Speaking of tough metal dudes and adorable puppies: Kerry King reveals in the August issue of Decibel that he used to show Akitas:

“I used to have the best Akitas on the West Coast for a while,” [King] enthuses. “I had a female that couldn’t  be beat for a six-week period. She just won everything. But I had the hardest time getting those bred, man. The female, I just couldn’t get her knocked up. I had her go to the best male in the country on two different heat cycles and just couldn’t get her pregnant. They’d breed; it just wouldn’t take. We tried artificial and everything.”

I had no idea you could artificially inseminate a dog. Kind of makes you wonder why there’s no Slayer lyrics about that.

In other news, I officially feel better about owning a bichon.

I WANNA TOUR WITH DARKEST HOUR

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 at 11:00am by

Darkest Hour are currently out on the road doing the MetalSucks co-sponsored Summer Slaughter tour, and they’re doing a video tour diary for our gay lovers at Metal Injection. Check it out below.

It’s good to see that Lonestar is growing his mega-beard back. It’s also good to see his package.

ANYWAY, I’ve seen enough of the touring lifestyle to know that I don’t ever want to go on tour. But then again, it looks like these dudes are having so much fun…

Look for more Darkest Hour tour diaries at Metal Injection throughout the rest of the summer. And you can Summer Slaughter tour dates here. In addition to Darkest Hour you get Suffocation, Necrophagist, Ensiferum, Dying Fetus, Origin, Born of Osiris, Winds of Plague, and a bunch of other cool bands, so definitely check it out!!!

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE MAKE A FINE KILLSWITCH ENGAGE RECORD WITH KILLSWITCH ENGAGE

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 at 10:15am by

killswitch engage self-titled

Killswitch Engage’s newest self-titled album sounds familiar, but that’s not the band’s fault. Well, actually, yes it is, in that the bludgeoned-to-dog-food horse known as metalcore owes a debt to the gentlemen in Killswitch. But even as a dude with what some could argue a pretentious taste in metal (the new Sunn 0))) album is definitely a grower, but it’s worth the wait!), I’ve always had a soft spot for the band: despite the throngs of guys with product-hardened hair and shitty sleeves acting like they’re the only ones to discover the first few In Flames records, Killswitch always knew what they did and knew they were good at it. You know exactly what you’re getting with one of their records – nimble-fingered Swede-tastic guitars occasionally cribbing from the Big Book of Metalcore Breakdowns, vocalist Howard Jones’ good cop/bad cop histrionics, a power ballad practically tailor made for Guitar Hero – but it’s always nice to hear it. It instantly brings one back to the halcyon days of the early ‘00s, when metalcore wasn’t so immediately associated with what was wrong with metal and deathcore wasn’t quickly becoming its fraternal twin.

ZAKK WYLDE LIKES PUPPIES

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 at 9:45am by

zakk wylde's puppiesZakk Wylde’s official Twitter account (@ZakkWyldeBLS ) is highly entertaining, if only for the fact that he primarily Tweets about 2 topics: lifting weights and his puppies. Wait, puppies?

I have this mental image of Wylde petting and talking to his puppies in a baby voice in between weight sets. Then I think him bench-pressing Ozzy. It’s funny. Also:

Zakk Wylde shaves his ass hair? Zakk Wylde has hair on the soles of his feet???
