MAN MUST DIE PROVE ME A SUCKER FOR ADVERTISING, TECH-DEATH

Monday, August 3rd, 2009 at 11:45am by Vince Neilstein

man must dieI’ve always wondered who actually reads those press quotes companies put on album covers and ads and takes them seriously. Like, who actually sees a poster for some movie they’ve never heard of and goes, “Gee, Gene Siskel said it’s ‘Thrilling!’, maybe I’ll check this one out!”? That is until Relapse Records booked a banner ad with us for the new Man Must Die album No Tolerance For Imperfection which comes out tomorrow. According to the ad, Terrorizer called the record “An unrelenting tech-death firestorm”; little bells went off inside my head whilst entering the banner into our system. Tech-death? I like tech-death. Firestorm? I like firestorms. Who is this techy, deathy, firestormy band I have never heard of? Man Must Die. I must know more. CLICK.

Thankfully I was not led astray. The UK quartet are, in fact, a tech-death firestorm. They also happen to be quite talented. I’d like to see someone put together a tour featuring these guys, Arsis, Obscura, and Psycroptic. Can someone make that happen please? We could call it the “Tech-Death Firestorm Tour” and MetalSucks would constantly push it down all of your throats sponsor it.

So in summary, not only did I actually take a press quote at face value but I clicked on my own fucking website’s ad; and I was rewarded for it. And no, I swear Relapse is not paying me to write this article nor am I trying to juice click-thru rates. Just go and listen to Man Must Die for yourself if you’re a fan — or think you might be a fan — of tech-death firestorms.

Scotland is the last place i would expect to find a tech-death band, let alone one that fucking slays!

  2. builtforsin says:

Check out there last cd too! It is VERY good! A band I prided myself on enjoying though no one had ever heard of them.

New cd is TIGHT AS FUCK.

  3. groverXIII says:

You had me at “tech-death firestorm”. Checking these guys out now.

And I’m probably running this into the ground, but I’m disappointed to have heard nary a peep from you guys about the new Gorod album, which at this point would probably be my album of the year if it weren’t for the fact that Clutch put out a new one. It’s pants-shittingly good.

  4. Nate L. says:

    yeah, don’t forget Gorod please.

as for MMD: very good. i like the firestorm description, but i’d propose more along the lines of monsoon.

  5. Rob says:

My favorite is the “For fans of” stickers. For Fans Of Sworn Enemy, Cannibal Corpse and Bob Dylan!

  6. Unholy Vortex says:

    Fleshgod Apocalypse!

  7. Ziltoid says:

Firestorm? This is the same generic *weedly weedly* tech death garbage that seems to be everywhere this year. The first song on their myspace is a perfect example of the awfulness:

    1) It has a riff WAY too similar to “Bleed” by Meshuggah that pops in occasionally (2:02 is a good example)

    2) Shitty simplistic breakdown laden with unnecessary profanity

    3) *weedly weedly* solo.

    4) Unmemorable riffs.

    5) Melodic leads? Not in my tech death!

    6) The drumming is lame and unoriginal.

It seems like this tech death will become the new fad after deathcore dies out. It is a step up, since the technicality is certainly there, but like Obscura (the band, not the amazing album), Necrophagist, Brain Drill, and the recent Arsis albums, this is soulless, self-indulgent music without any real sense of direction. I’d much prefer it if these technical bands actually developed their ideas instead of just sticking to one for an entire song.

I’m resolving now to attempt to use the phrase “weedly weedly” in a conversation at least once per day.

      • Ziltoid says:

Haha, well, it is the best way to describe boring tech death since most of it falls victim to the *weedly weedly*.

        • groverXIII says:

Well, I’m listening to the whole album at the moment, and they’re not that boring. They’re no Gorod, and I could do without the occasional breakdowns that they throw in there, but they’re still head and shoulders above a lot of the more boring death metal/deathcore bands I’ve heard.

          • Ziltoid says:

Gorod’s newest is a great example of *weedley weedly* tech death. I didn’t mind Leading Vision or Neurotripsticks, but that new thing is awful.

          • groverXIII says:

Needless to say, I highly disagree with you. Not only is it better than “Leading Vision” (high praise, in my mind, because “Leading Vision” is a brilliant album in its own right), but it’s one of the better albums to be released this year. The guitar leads are ridiculously catchy, the songs are well-constructed, and it’s not a constant assault on the senses because they seamlessly add those little groovy sections they do so well. I don’t understand how you can be okay with “Leading Vision” and yet think “Process Of A New Decline” is awful.

(I guess I feel kinda strongly about this… odd. Maybe it’s just because this has been in high rotation on my mp3 player and in my car since it was released.)

Then again, you always have such polarized opinions of everything, it seems… either you like it and it’s brilliant, or you don’t like it and it’s the worst thing you’ve ever heard. It’s so rarely in between.

    • Fong Chung says:

Jesus you rip on everything that isn’t Townsend related right? Obscura shouldn’t be into the same sentence as Brain Drill and Arsis. They actually write songs with a feel to them. It’s not just a boring, “Weedly Weedly” riff after riff like claim. We all can’t be like you, and have such an exceptional taste in metal right!!!!!!!!!!! Ok maybe I’ll go back and listen to the latest Sunn 0))) record without falling asleep right?

  8. Fong Chung says:

I guess Viking Metal has an affect on some people……….

  9. Aya says:

I like UK bands for some reason.
    I’ll give them a shot. :)

  10. Aya says:

I think it worths one listen. :/
It makes me want to go back and enjoy new Centaurus-A stuff. Still prefer melodic tech death.

  11. -gODGRINDER- says:

Been a fan of these guys for a couple years now.

Will definitely be picking this up along with the new Nightrage.

  12. Charlie B says:

Another example of generic tech death metal. It been done better by many other bands. I was bored out of my gord after the first song.

  13. Jordan says:

Who cares if this band is another “unoriginal” “weedly weedly” tech-death band? Not all music has to break fucking boundaries. Stop being elitist assholes and enjoy some fucking music for a change.

  14. Dan-O says:

Downloaded their new album a little bit ago and it has been on constant play for awhile now. Will buy once I get paid again (god damn credit cards….). Good fucking band!
