My favorite cartoon characters are Brent Hinds and the members of Dethklok. Seriously. I once watched Hinds do a belly-flop onto a bar table covered in beer mugs. He came out of a coma and is only sillier for the experience. You could drop an anvil on that dude’s head and all that would happen is he’d see little tweety-birds buzzing around his head. And then he’d write an awesome concept album about them.
So: in what strikes me as only semi-strange news, Mastodon and Dethklok will co-headline a tour this fall, with support coming from Converge and High on Fire. I am slightly miffed that the mighty High on Fire and absolutely God-like Converge are opening for a make believe band, but since it’s Dethklok, I’ll let it pass… this time.

This is such a kick-ass lineup except for the fact that a fucking cartoon has higher billing than Converge or High On Fire. I love Metalocalypse the show, but I don’t give a damn about the band. Hopefully the set is funny and not long.
My thoughts exactly. Metalocalypse is sort of funny and the songs have funny lyrics, but wouldn’t go see them if it was free. I have no interest in seeing some goons pretend to be cartoon characters. I’d rather see High on Fire play an extended set. Nonetheless, the show will be epic.

I don’t much care for Dethklok, but I wouldn’t call them any more “make-believe” than any other band. They are still human beings (and gene hoglan) that go up on stage and play metal. Yes, it’s from a cartoon, but it is still real nonetheless :-)

I’m fairly sure I figured out why this tour isn’t coming to the Bay Area: Mastodon are playing at the Outside Lands Festival in SF this month. All large festivals demand a ‘blackout’ period in which the band can’t advertise that they’re playing the city in which the festival occurs within 2-3 months of the date. If they did set up this amazing show in SF, I’m sure Mastodon fans would skip OL.
That said…seriously, what the fuck!?!?! Might be driving to LA as this far too good to miss.

Well, there’s still a chance that they come to NorCal. It’s at the very end of the tour and hopefully someone out there is smart enough to book them. It’s also in November which is quite a bit away…there shouldn’t be that many venues booked by then I think.
Who knows? I wouldn’t be surprised if an SF date were added in November after the festival passes. Look out for this after Sep. 1st.
