IS REVOCATION “THE NEXT GREAT METAL BAND?”

In case you couldn’t tell, I really enjoy reading Cosmo Lee’s Invisible Oranges, even if I don’t always agree with him (The Real Thing does still pwn, dude!). This morning, Cosmo ponders the search for “the next great metal band” – what he compares to a first-round draft pick in sports – and posits that it could be Relapse artists, Revocation:

“They have songs, not just a sound. Their songs are identifiable within seconds. They have memorable riffs and rhythms. Their chops have soul. David Davidson’s solos are amazing tightrope walks of speed, hooks, and bluesy swagger. The last metal guitarist to do that was Dimebag Darrell.”

Wow. That’s quite a compliment, isn’t it?

I only got to listen to one Revocation song with my morning coffee, but I  don’t even wanna weigh in on them just yet anyways; I just wanna know what you cats think. Head over to the band’s MySpace page – Mr. Lee recommends the songs “Dismantle the Dictator” and “The Brain Scramblers” – then come back here and let us know if you think Revocation is, indeed, “the next Megadeth,” if “not the next Metallica.”

Revocation’s Existence is Futile comes out September 29 on Relapse.

Went to high school with the bass player, really proud of how far these guys have come! They’ve come a long way from shows in Phil’s church’s basement! I think they’re fucking great, but I’m biased.

  • Sandman

Ok, this band does kick some ass. I’m liking what I’m hearing. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • Zack

Slightly off topic, but the way that guy completely writes off everything Faith No More did after “The Real Thing” is hilarious.

    • sYgnal

      +1

Yea, it’s always these types of clowns that write off FNM because they haven’t listened to anything beyond The Real Thing. The great thing about FNM is that they got even better as they progressed and didn’t turn into a similar sounding band as all those nu-metal bands that mention them as an influence.

    I like it.
I think their band logo and CD artwork kind of work against them
because it makes them look like a shitty basement death metal band.

These guys are way better than that.

Cool riffs and solos that range from shred to bluesy.
And tempo changes that are tight and very well placed.
    Very Nice.

    • Deaner

      totally agree

  • thebenthic

this band is meh at best. but the bass player does get pretty down though vocals are shit.

    • Watty

Seconded…they’re alright, but not anything to fawn over and or refer to as the next big thing in metal…

  • Kyle

Oh man. I fucking dig it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carlos-Ramirez/631635101 Carlos Ramirez

The vox remind me of Brett’s on the first Malevolent Creation album which is a good thing.

  • http://www.greatgooglymoogly.com Halfsharkalligator

i like it, but i dont think i would ever buy it

    • http://www.greatgooglymoogly.com Halfsharkalligator

to elaborate a bit more, the drum production kind of killed it for me and the guitars were good, but forgettable. Dig the bass and vox though.

  • Balls666

First of all, stop typing “pwned.” What are you, fucking retarded? I should smack the shit out of you, you conforming little bitch. Use real fucking words when you write articles. You just make the metal community look illiterate. Seven times out of ten I read something you guys write, I can’t help but wish to burn down your metalsucks mansion. Maybe drive a railroad spike into your fucking jugular with a 30 lb sledgehammer.

Secondly, the band is pretty good. Metallica is poop. So why the hell would you want another?

    • http://www.kingdomofnoise.blogspot.com MetalMatt

      what does pwn even mean?

  • razorsharp codpiece

DOWN WITH CONFORMITY! BALLS666 FOR PRES!

  • http://www.myspace.com/northwestroyale Blake

I like ‘em. “Dismantle the Dictator” reminds me a lot of Forced Entry. The jazzy solo part at the end is TITS!

    • groverXIII

I couldn’t check out their MySpace from work, but I did get a track streamed from their Last.fm page and it wasn’t bad. I’ll check these guys out a bit further.

      • groverXIII

Odd… not sure why this posted here instead of at the bottom of the page. Whoops.

  • Metal Fuckin’ Dave

Saw these guys open up for Swashbuckle in a dirty little bar in Dayton. This was well before they were signed to Relapse and even at that stage, you could tell these guys were going somewhere. Great live act.

  • mrbinky

I liked Age of Iniquity the best.

Beginning of Empire of the Obscene reminded me of Morbid Angel’s Dawn of the Angry. Weird, just noticed the titles are similar…..

  • Ziltoid

The guitars sound thin, and the vocals are not good. Of course, the infamous weedly weedly is there, but it’s actually not bad at all. They seem to have some good ideas. I don’t think they’re the next Megadeth or anything, but I like what I’m hearing. They’re one of the few bands going for a tech death sound that could actually be very good. Really, the vocalist should go for a bit of a deeper, more guttural sound, because I think that would really fit the music better. Flawed, but they have potential. One of the rare decent recs from MS.

Great bass, the rest is not bad.

  • Facebook User

So crazy considering I remember seeing this band a few years ago in a crowded basement party playing “Surprise! You’re Dead!”

  • LilalCFH

    Band = Awesome

Comparing him to Dimebag = Ridiculous

    • Alex

well.. Sure.. he is not Dimebag but could become a new guitar hero. he’s got what it takes…

  • http://jordanmunson.wordpress.com Jordan

The new wave of Boston metal is pretty rad, these guys included. I’m not sure I agree whole-heartedly about how good these guys are, but I enjoy them a lot. I feel like I saw them play a show with Razormaze once before somewhere near Boston.

    (Razormaze rocks, BTW http://www.myspace.com/razormazethrash)

  • S for Shoota

That was pretty dam siiick. Definitely going to be listening to these guys more and more.

  • http://ultimateposerblog.blogspot.com Ultimate Poser Blog

What about Salome, Book of Black Earth, Nervecell or Landmine Marathon? Or if Blood of the Tyrant gets signed, then they’ll totally be the next, next big thing.

    • Alex

all those bands you mentioned are average and some really boring, nothing out of the ordinary. I checked them all and Revocation is a lot better. Thy’re not my favorite band but I think they have potential to become one of the biggest

  • http://www.tonesofdeath.com Liz

Anyone who came to our June Tonesofdeath.com showcase in NYC got to see this band for FREE! And yes, they are sick. Oh, and by the way, our next showcase is free 9/3. Don’t miss it!

  • Andrew

The next “great” metal band is Kylesa.

Revocation is good, but not great. There are other bands on Relapse that are much better. Minsk is a good example.

    • Alex

Kylesa and Minsk are two of the most boring bands I’ve ever heard. Of course it’s just my personal opinion, Anyway those bands are extremely different as to compare them

  • Strapping Young Lad

ha, wow these guys have gotten big! i remember about a year ago they played at a bar right outside my apartment in Boston. I was talking with Dave outside before hand, and he was a really cool dude. Keep on rockin, boys!

  • http://myspace.com/hoplite Travis Conquest

I’m having a hard time getting into them. I want to hate them, just because Metalsucks brought them up… But I can’t hate them. I just can’t really like them, either.

  • Santa Claus

Not really into these guys. They have some interesting moments, overall flow of songs though leads me to lose interest. I dont want to stick around and hear whats going to happen next. OV-ER-LORD OV-ER-LORD… click.

  • Tommy Lindbergsen

These guys seems to be melding a lot of different ideas into one solid pot, still…this isn’t anything groundbreaking.

  • Gossamer Axe

Can we ever be rid of Cryin Ryan?

  • http://infinitybasement.wordpress.com billybob

    Flamers are gay.

    This band is tight.

  • http://www.myspace.com/this_is_james_myspace Necrozoid

I’m digging the tunes, i might even go as far to say that i will buy the album (although the album name is horrible i mean, “resistance is futile”, give me a break).

    • http://www.myspace.com/this_is_james_myspace Necrozoid

      I Meant Existence, i swear

  • Mike

I’ve been listening to metal for thirty years and I love Revocation. Two of my favorites are Fields of Predation and Alliance in Tyranny. Those songs are tight-tight-tight, as challenging as anything out there, mind blowing, moving, even thrilling, and actually enjoyable. I leave those songs feeling lucky every. single. time. But not all their songs are alike and that “inconsistency” seems appropriate for an emerging band. These young guys are smart to avoid locking themselves down to anything while they are still forming. The next big thing? They would raise the bar, that’s for sure. They’re great live, the bands they play with know it’s something special, but they don’t act like dicks. Rosenberg’s onto something.

  • http://www.flamingtusk.com Zosimus

Word, as always, to Cosmo Lee. The dude saw fit to say kind words about my band, in print, in Decibel magazine, so the dude clearly knows where the good shit is at.

  • Kyle

Since reading this the other day and checking out their myspace page, I have picked up ‘Empire of the Obscene.’ Still in the process of digesting it, but man, fucking awesome. I mean really, really sick shit. Thanks for the heads up on this band. Amazing.

  • veep

Listened to the music, and read the comments. Not my type of music—I’m too old—but I do know David from day one—-and to those who “aren’t that impressed”—-stick around they are just warming up. Dave likes to learn along the way—and he is loving every minute of it, so who the fuck cares what you think?
