A BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF THE DRUMMER FOR THE BINARY CODE

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 at 1:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

Without a doubt, New Jersey tech/death/prog outfit The Binary Code is one of my favorite – if not my absolute favorite – unsigned metal bands. I’ve been lucky enough to hear some of the new shit they’ve been working on, and this band just keeps getting more and more epic, brutal, and accomplished as musicians. I’m hesitant to call them Sumeriancore only because it might turn some of you off, but that’s the easiest generic categorization I can think of.

(Side note: the band also has sweet merch, which you can peruse and order here. In the great tradition of band members doubling as graphic artists, all the visuals are designed by guitarist Jesse Zuretti. So he’s a better guitarist and a better artist than you. Chump.)

Here’s a video of the band’s drummer, Umar Fahim, playing a new, as of yet still-untitled track. As you can see, the dude absolutely slays behind the kit. I had to watch it twice – once just to watch Fahim kill it, and once to try and listen to the actual song, which is typically awesome.

I’m hearing rumblings of this band getting on some pretty sweet tours later this year. While we wait for official word, check out more of their awesomeness on MySpace. And hopefully someone will have the good sense to sign them sooner rather than later.

Sumerian core is a perfect name for this. Or bland, uncatchy songwriting with annoying riffs and no structure. This is like listening to a room full of idiots all talking at once. What happened to real tech metal? how does no one notice how horrible and untimeless these records are? NO ONE WILL CARE about this shit in 10 years. Or probably two for that matter.

A for effort on the drummer… i guess. Still not great though…

Cmon dude! You can guys do way better than this…

  3. I always admire the sheer amount of momentum metal-drummers are capable of building up with such a teeny-tiny twitch with the wrist.
Damn I wish I could do that.

  4. gnarlk says:

those t-shirt graphics are a bigger cliche than the music. not only human, but animal skulls! my gawd…

    • notlookinggoodformetal says:

      not one memorable riff.

      • FistedSister says:

agreed. cant say ill remember one single riff. but from what i can tellthis is just a scratch guitar track. my band does the same thing with our vids. were not crazy like this though. but youd remember a riff at least

  5. Brent Hacker says:

heres the guitar.. waaaooooowaaaaooooo dooo dee doo waaooo waaaooo repeat.. lol, i think the drummer might be the only good musician.. but godddd the guitar was soo bland and repetative

  6. Sammy says:

As someone who is an awesome drummer in my mind, but a complete 5th chair in the Special Olympics band drummer in real life (beyond simple tom rolls), I’m beyond impressed by the drum riffs in this video. As for the song itself, I’m not really sure at any moment where it’s headed…and maybe that’s the point.

  7. kirk says:

damn, gimme my 3 minutes back. is it me, or could that have been played with any less passion or feeling?

  8. Lol, would you guys prefer the one-armed wonder Rick Allen?

Check out the Void if this is too hard for your pansy ears. Maybe you can atleast get over your fear of metal and acknowledge these guys for the mad fuckin’ musicians they are.

    • hard? says:

what the hell is hard about this? and since when does throwing together some spacey nonsense make people “mad fuckin’ musicians”?

    • Tommy says:

I don’t think anyone’s issue with this comes with it being too “hard”….it’s just generic, yes the drummer can play extremely well, but so what, WHERE IS THE SONG!?! I love technical bands, IF they are able to still write memorable songs…but part of me is ready for the backlash against the million and one bands like this.
Metal has become more of a sport than music, get your allstar drummer who can play more b.p.m. than the other guy, the super jazz influenced guitar player to tweedle deet deet in between blast beats…and don’t get me started on vocalists. Writing songs with true emotion (even if it is just anger) is hard to find. I mean I love bands such as Between the Buried and Me, and Mastodon…bands that are extremely talented and you actually know it’s them when you hear their songs. A lot of this other stuff you could play me 12 albums and honestly I probably couldn’t tell one band from the other.

    Too much ‘weedly weedly’.

    • CriminalPants says:

to much weedly weedly, too many power chords, you people will always find something to bitch about; post your bands myspace _ _ -

  10. chauncey chompers says:

yeah the guy has amazing technical skill, is incredibly dextrous and can remember a million parts. I however cannot remember one riff from that song.

  11. Dilznoofus says:

I agree that it’s not memorable, and I hope this never supplants the memorable, but it reminds me of some absurd version of jazz. I love jazz, especially free-form. This totally fits that mold. Plus, we’re in the ADHD generation. This is perfect ADHD music.

  12. Billie Cooper says:

Woeful and piss poor, i’m sick and tired of hearing these little cunts called talented, just because you spend hours locked in your room with guitar or bass guitar tab sheets studying it does not mean that you have talent. shredding does not equal talent. Please stop encouraging these assholes.

  13. Anselmowitz says:

Dude is a sick drummer, music aint my thang.

  14. Dang... says:

Man, what a bunch of haters, I enjoyed just watching him play, and that’s all. Get over yourselves and just enjoy the video.

  15. CriminalPants says:

All of the assholes pedantically criticizing this are probably in really sick bands creating the most unique music no one has ever heard.

  16. Rob says:

We played with this band a few months back in new york. Everyone in the room was shocked on how cocky these kids were. The guitarist just sat in the back of the room talking shit to his fellow members “this band isnt tight at all” “are we this bad?” “is that kid even in tune?” to bands that were, in my opinion, ten times better than the noise pollution garbage “metal” if you’d like to call it that his disgusting greasy cheeseburger loving ass was writing. sumeriancore would be a compliment for these dudes, because that’s way too high of a standard for the binary code. they belong where they are and that’s unsigned. until they do write something “unique” sorry kids, this is garbage. get off the pedastools.

  17. Rob says:

oh and jazz? lol. these guys don’t know what jazz is

  18. Rob – we make it a point to be congenial with all of the bands we play with, regardless of whether or not we like the music. It’s hit or miss when you play a lot of shows, whether you’ll dig a band or not. As for the incidence you’re speaking about, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Does it mean it didn’t happen? No, but it also doesn’t really matter if it did. You honestly think that 90% of the bands you listen to or play with never say anything bad about the bands they play with? Boy are you wrong. As a matter of fact, from what we’ve come to learn, National touring bands hardly play with locals they even pay attention to, let alone actually loan their ears to. Which is a shame, because there are some real gems out there (every show we play, we are surprised by the talent that plays the bill). I highly doubt this actually happened, but for what it’s worth, I’m sorry you’re so spiteful towards us. It’s a shame, because we like to be friends with everyone we can in the metal community because it’s what we’re here for. Regardless of whether or not the music is our thing. Just curious, what show/lineup was it you were referring to (what was your band called)? We played NY nearly 10 times in June. We made good friends along the way – I’m surprised there was a band that played one of the shows that had such resentment towards us, honestly.- – - – Thanks for the positive & constructive feedback guys and gals! Good or bad, we appreciate everyone taking the time out to say nice things/shit on us. Thanks Axl & Vince!

  19. Fuck off says:

So you like band that are able to hit things randomly and make a bunch of nonsensical noise apparently. What a worthless shit stain.
