CELESTE: ANOTHER AWESOME FRENCH METAL BAND

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 at 12:02pm by

mislpTo follow up on Vince’s French Metal Invasion post: everyone needs to check out Celeste. I first read about the band on Invisible Oranges but didn’t actually get around to listening to them until last night, and I’m glad that I did.

There’s definitely a black metal-tinge to the music, but it also incorporates jabbing, metallic riffs and the raw-yet-sprawling scope of post-hardcore bands like Buried Inside. Celeste makes the kind of music that is somehow beautiful and ugly at the same time. The production is way harsh and the vocals are bloody hoarse; the lyrics are in French so I have no idea what the fuck the dude is singing about, but whatever it is, he sure does sound all worked up.

I listened to Celeste’s latest, Misanthrope(s), twice last night, and once again this morning. I’m already prepared to declare it one of the best albums of 2009. It’s available as a free download, so you have absolutely no excuse to not at least check it out (if you’re really that worried about saving precious hard drive space, you can also just stream it). Go get it now.

I’m skeptical on the black metal/hardcore combo (and the Keep of Kalessin comparison), but it’s free, so I’ll try it. These guys need to learn how to tag their stuff, though. Caps lock = fail.

    • Ziltoid

Wait, the Keep comparison was another post today, my bad.

      • Lord Bling

It’s worth the price, but yeah …. CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR AWESOME

      Keep of Kalessin DESTROYS this.

      • Canvas Of Flesh

Keep pretty much destroys 99 percent of anything on this site.

you should also check out the previous band of some of the band members: mihai edrisch. less metallic, equally misanthropic. you can download their stuff on their homepage.

  • loose nut

oh and for the record: the previous celeste release is slightly better than the new one. glad they managed to keep a certain level.

    post-sludgecore?

digging this. kind of reminds me of swarm of the lotus in a not-at-all sort of way.

  • Greywhind

Wow. This is really good stuff. And free? Thank you for finding this.

    • loose nut

well, you can still buy it if you digg it. 2xLP looks sick, the second press just arrived at denovali (their label). check it out, there’s more free music too. :P

Damn, France continues to make interesting contributions to metal. Awesome highlight, guys.

So far, this is sounding like an odd mix between black metal and sludge. I would normally be predisposed not to like this at all (I don’t like sludge), but it’s actually pretty decent. Definitely worth a download, especially for free.

Just so you know, France has also some of the shittiest bands you’ve ever heard of… You should give a spin to Watcha, Mass Hysteria, Enhancer, or Empyr and see that French metal is not ONLY Gojira-inspired tech stuff, but also pure fucking lame shit…
