HOLY SHIT, THE NEW CONVERGE SONG IS FUCKING AMAZING

I want you to know that I am stone-cold sober right now. There is no weed in my system. I am not influenced by anything other than the power of music.

There is a new Converge song, “Dark Horse,” streaming on the band’s MySpace page right now. It comes off of their new album, Axe to Fall. And it is fucking incredible.

The whole band sounds so furious and so tight. Kurt Ballou seems to be playing some metallic jig; this has to be one of the most instantly memorable Converge riffs since “Homewrecker.” I don’t know if someone was actually holding a gun to Ben Koller’s head when he was playing or if it just sounds that way. Or maybe they were holding the gun to Nate Newton’s head, and told Koller  if he didn’t give the most furious performance of his career thus far, his friend would get it. Jacob Bannon still sounds like the kind of dude who gets a tattoo right across his Adam’s apple. Which he is.

It’s MySpace so it’s hard to know for sure, but the production also sounds a little crisper and brighter to me than it was on previous Converge releases. All the better to highlight the stellar performances of the band.

This is incredibly encouraging. I absolutely cannot fucking wait to hear the rest of Axe to Fall. It comes out October 20 on Epitaph.

I hate the vocals, but that “jig” is weird. It sounds like a dumbed down Suidakra melody (or a power metal melody), which is still a compliment. Still, the song feels undeveloped. I’ve heard lots of hype about Converge that I never really understood, but I guess I’ll have to check this out

    • metalguy says:

i didnt even now they were that big till they made that fucking list, but im still to lazy to check them out

    • Vikingfromhell890 says:

The hype about Converge comes from their live show. But I will say now that seeing them in a bigger venue won’t be the same as a smaller club where they really shine.

      • rayray says:

I have seen this band live (unfortunately) and I do not understand what the hype is. Where are the groovy headbanging parts? Its a mindfuck trying to listen to this nonsense. This band stinks and I dont give a fuck what anyone says. I guess I just need a logical explanation as to why this band “rules, is awesome, is the best band ever.”

        • stu1 says:

Because they’re insane live, have pretty amazing/complex songs, etc. There’s definitely groovy “headbanging” parts in songs so I’m not sure what you’ve been listening to. If you’re a metal purist, than I can understand you not liking it. But, if you have more diverse taste then it’s pretty awesome.

  2. borden says:

FUCKING AWESOME. CAN’T WAIT FOR MORE!!!!!!

  3. MrC says:

That song makes me want to spank myself…

  4. iAmAsteroid says:

Holy shit! I hope that the rest of Axe To Fall is as ridiculously amazing as “Dark Horse.” I can’t wait to see ‘em with Mastodon in October!

  5. groverXIII says:

Admittedly, I’ve never listened to Converge before (hardcore, in most forms, is not my thing), and that was a decent song… but I don’t see what all the hype is about.

  6. Frampler says:

Why can’t it be October 20 yet?

  7. Josh says:

I WAS HOPING YOU WOULD WRITE ABOUT IT, CAUSE IM TOO LAZY TO SIGN UP AT LAMBGOAT.

  8. Metal Fuckin' Dave says:

For the first time in my life…I’m sold on Converge. And I fully expected this song to suck despite your elation.

  9. Josh says:

man and i accidentally pushed enter. shit. Song is badass. These guys and mastodon, very nicee

  10. CARLTON3000 says:

i saw converge with mastodon once, they totally ruined the show, i cant figure out why everyone continues to jizz everywhere about this band, keep it in your boner pants.

  11. aaron m. says:

wow. that’s really weird. for converge, i mean. i can definitely hear the mastodon influence. and upon a second listen, i give it my stamp of approval. very psyched to hear the rest of it this album.

  12. Fuck. They are amazing. I am in awe.

  13. Matt says:

    I really don’t like the intro riff…
The rest of the song is badass though.

  14. esteban says:

converge just sounds like noise to me but i’m interested in buying some jacob bannon prints

  15. jason says:

I can’t access the song! Foiled again by the corporate IT Nazis.

  16. Shingo says:

October is going to rock my socks off. New Converge and new Between the Buried And Me??!! FUUUUUUUUUU

  17. This is certainly different for Converge, but this is fuckin’ sweet. Can’t wait. Hopefully, I get to hit up the Dallas show with Mastodon at HOB in Dallas!

    • stu1 says:

I don’t think it’s very far off from their past couple things, at all.

      • I’ll re-phrase. It’s a “little different” for Converge. There are portions of the song that aren’t very typical of Converge, but then it switches back to old Converge. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Can’t wait!

        • stu1 says:

If you start with Jane Doe and go forward, each album has changed just a bit: maintains the Converge sound but varies enough to show some evolution/change.

  18. JJL says:

holy ass butt this is good.

  19. Jackson says:

killer, wish the cd was out before they were coming through here with Mastodon though

  20. Hey Fuck Yeah Converge is the Shit says:

There is seven songs I think streaming on their MySpace page fucking stupid amazing. Seeing them live is the best way to expierience this band.

  21. I love that riff, cant wait for the CD and that tour

  22. Kevin says:

    Its would sound better live…

  23. Sammy says:

I love the riff. It is reminiscent of some past riff, but I can’t place it. I don’t know the musical definition of “jig” but I’ll go with yours, Ax.

  24. jason says:

I dunno…I’ve seen Converge several times (always had a blast) but I think their sound suffers a bit live. Of course that totally make up for it with an energy that is unrivaled by virtually every band I’ve ever seen. They literally tear the face off the crowd.

  25. Colin says:

I just don’t get it I guess. Didn’t like what I heard, but I may give it another chance.

  26. That song is redazzlelickulous. And they rule live.

  27. jackattack says:

    Holy shit….

I rescind everything I said in the prior post. This is about as encouraging as it gets…. i mentioned it just a second ago, but this is (what I thought at the release of You Fail Me to be impossible) a more catchy and manic version of the riff at the end of “Drop Out”….

    Goddamn, they’ve done it again.

  28. Allan says:

This is AWESOME. Unlike anything they’ve ever done. Legit.

  29. uLy says:

not a fan of their older work but this is shaping up nicely! i hope the album is like this. seems like the vocals are better this time around

  30. LilalCFH says:

WHY AM I THE ONLY GUY WHO THINKS THIS BAND IS FUCKING GARBAGE?!?!

    FUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKK COOOONNNVVVEEEERRRGGGEEEE!!!!!!!

    they suck.

  31. Sam says:

Ehh…Converge is ok. I like the artwork ol’ boy does more than the music.

  32. Chris Uber says:

It was alright. I’ll stick to my Gorod.

  33. ad says:

Awesome song. Was not expecting that.

  34. monsterheadbangSTFU says:

THERE’S NO FUCKING REASON THAT ANYONE CAN HATE ON CONVERGE

YOU ALL CAN EAT A DICK MOTHER FUCKS. THERE AIN’T NO REASON TO SPEAK TO THAT SHIT SO SHUT THE FUCK UP.

    PEACE
