BLACK METAL GETS ALL SMART N’ SHIT

Symposium2006

Did you know that MetalSucks’ very own Satan Rosenbloom runs his own blog, Cerebral Metalhead, where he writes under the ridiculous pseudonym “Etan?” It’s true. And he’s just alerted us to the fact that there’s going to be a black metal symposium, in which some intellectual types present papers – PAPERS! – on the topic of (duh) black metal. Says Satan:

The most intriguing titles announced so far:

“‘Remain true to the earth!’: Remarks on the Politics of Black Metal” by Benjamin Noys

“Black Confessions and Absu-lution” by Niall Scott

“The light that illuminates itself, the dark that soils itself: blackened notes from Schelling’s underground” by Steven Shakespeare.

Pitchfork’s Brandon Stosuy, founder of the popular Show No Mercy series, will also present an as of yet unnamed paper. Two artists are are set to ply their metal-themed wares, as well. The only thing missing is, you know, music.

This is either going to be really, really interesting, or boring as fuck.

The symposium will take place at Public Assembly in Brooklyn in December. Hit up Cerebral Metalhead for more deets. That’s what the kids call “details.”

Too freaking cool. I actually wish they would do a net meeting or something for this.

Yep, this stuff happens all the time. I gave a paper on metal a few months back at a conference. There is one called “Heavy Metal and Gender” in Cologne in October. Angela Gossow is giving a vocal workshop, oooooo.

Man, this is what I hate about black metal. Everyone else hates the corpsepaint and the criminals. I hate the pseudo-intellectual bullshit associated with a genre of music famous for blast beats and incomprehensible lyrics. Fuck this stupid shit.

    • Grrrr. Roooaaarrrr. Tough guy.

But it’s pretty apparent why black metal attracts intellectuals due to the symphonic elements, it’s support & belief of National Socialism, misanthropy, & anti-Christianity. And the corpsepaint…..I mean cmon, black metal is so out of touch with reality that people are so fascinated by it. I know that’s why I am.

  6. Canvas Of Flesh says:

I’m not sure, but a symposium doesn’t sound very “black metal.”

  7. Gary S. says:

I don’t think anyone I saw at the MARmaDUKe show would attend an academic symposium, though I imagine that the subsequent party at Public Assembly afterwards will bring out the troo kvlt tards.

That might actually be worth a trip out to NY.

  9. Glenn says:

While I wouldn’t want to knock the idea of more scholarship on metal music, I also wouldn’t expect very much discussion of anything actually …musical… in this conference. Don’t be surprised if the presenters skip playing any music at all. On the other hand, expect lots of analysis of lyrics and some sociology. It’s too bad, really and I’d be pleased to be proved wrong…

Lots of (pretty much ALL) metal scholarship is on cultural/social aspects, not a lot out there on the actual music. I am writing a music THEORY thesis on metal right now…. mainly focused on the actual music. My worry is that no one wants to hear my theoretical discussions of metal, but who knows.

  10. The two worst types of people to get involved in the musical world are intellectuals and conservatives…and I’m a conservative saying this, Republicans out of rock and metal!!

  11. Reaper-X says:

That reminds me of and essay I wrote comparing and contrasting Black Metal (Norwegian Second Wave) to Romantic Period poetry.

    I got a B on it.

    DEAD!
when this starts, the cult is over, and the machine eats the leftovers, and vomit what they call PAPERS!

    just say no!

  13. Gossamer Axe says:

Satan will get an “A” on his paper!

  14. anttichrist says:

I thought Living Color was the first black metal band. Any socio-politic essays available on the subject?

  15. Trux says:

Of all the metal subgeneres out there, they choose to do a black metal symposium ???…. really ???… How many people the organizers expect to actually be there … 50 ?
