Right the fuck on, Pat. It really makes me wonder if it’s the reviewer’s first year. But I definitely have to say that nothing says “I’m in it for the attitude and the way it makes me forget about getting shoved in lockers my entire young life” like when latant homosexuals complain about keyboards. For one thing.. it’s an instrument. No one goes “What the hell is up with these guitars!?! I mean.. COME ON.. WHAT IS THIS THE 60′s????”. Actually I take that back. Varg said something of the nature. But he’s an imbecile. Anyways. I just picked up the album and I’m playing it I’m typing this. It’s prettty tight so far. But it’s going to take a lot beat “Timeless Departure” and “Mind Revolution”. Spectral was cool, but I definitely prefer the earlier releases. Oh.. and one more thing. With regards to that “Melodic Death is tired” comment… I haven’t seen anything outside of the vein of traditional heavy metal that has managed to top it since. I mean.. Metalcore? Or how about the overkill that has become Technical Death Metal? Seriously.. I’m waiting on some reviewers with musical taste.

how can a Skyfire review even reference bleeding through and winds of plague, abigail williams? those bands are complete metalcore garbage and youre comparing them to a band who continuously puts out way above average records in a genre full of crap.

Also, Esoteric isn’t even fucking released, how is this review possible?
Did Pivotal Rockordings actually give this shitty website a copy of the album?

I agree with Coonsan, this reviewer obviously isn’t a musician himself. This review is pure “I want heaviness” bullshit, and a mockery to metal fandom. Once again, metal sucks lives up to its name with its misguided ignorance. Aside from that, the review spends more time trying to be clever than actually focusing on the album. I don’t care that this is actually supposed to be a positive reaction to the album, your claims are absolutely ridiculous. Are violins not METAL enough for you either? How about lead guitars, lets eliminate that aspect as well since it takes away from the HEAVY rhythms. Metal is much more a continuation of the spirit of classical music than it is rock, the TALENTED stuff anyway.

A little disappointed in all the anti-keyboard/synth/orchestral hate. Not everything can be tr00 br00tal/tr00 cvlt, and it shouldn’t be. Metal takes just as much from classical and progressive music as it does rock.

About time there was some Skyfire coverage on MetalSucks.

Their debut album Timeless Departure was a high quality debut, but was a bit too keyboard driven, whereas 2004′s Spectral was a masterpiece of melodic death metal (and balanced the keyboards perfectly).

Hopefully this album is just as good, even with a new vocalist.

That is a difficult question. Specifically, I’d say that these composers you mention are the time tested geniuses, the best of the best. Therefore, writing for orchestras – or orchestra Hits as it were – is very difficult. Most metal musicians are self taught. And even if they did go to music school, what then? Most music school grads can’t write as good as Beethoven and Mahler either.

Its really a numbers game. Even Emperor couldn’t top Anthems.

Not bad at all. The keyboards do take up a lot of room, but Skyfire sound a little bit like Darkane in places (especially the vocals), so that’s a plus.
