Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 at 3:00pm by

warwick bassesLast year’s contest in which we gave away a signed Mudvayne guitar was one of our most popular ever, so we’ve teamed up with Mudvayne and Warwick to offer MetalSucks readers a Warwick RockBass Vampyre bass, as well as the opportunity to have your questions about bass playing answered by Mudvayne bassist Ryan Martinie.

  • 1st place winner: wins the Warwick bass, gets to ask Ryan Martinie their questions in a telephone interview, and wins a signed poster
  • 2nd place winner: gets to ask Ryan their questions in an email interview and wins a signed poster
  • 3rd place winner: wins a signed poster

Here’s how it’s going to work: Post a comment below, using a valid email address (winners will be contacted by email) in which you ask 5-10 questions about bass playing for Ryan Martinie to answer. Ryan will personally select three winners. You will have until 11:59pm EDT on Wednesday, September 9th to submit your questions, and winners be notified personally in the following days. So make your questions good! U.S. residents only, please. By entering, you certify that you have read the official contest rules here.

Question one: Can I get the bass without your signature on it, Mr. Mudvayne? I prefer not to reduce the resale value of my equipment like that.

    • Nick wentz

      what a butt fucker…

    • JoeBerben

Thats just plain dickery buddy… What do you gain by posting shit like that other than let everyone know you are a fuckwit? I personally hope ‘Mr Mudvayne’ tracks you down and tattoos his signature on your tiny shrivelled up stub of a nob..Hows that resale value bitch..

      • Elitist Fuck

        Butthurt, aren’t we?

        Here’s my five questions:

        1. What’s it like to know that most of the commentators below don’t give one fuck about your band, let alone your bass playing, and are just doing this for the bass? Does the knowledge that they’d sooner turn around and sell the thing enhance this emotion?
        2. How big is your dick? I’ve got a baby carrot and I was just wondering if this was normal.
        3. What kind of women do you like? Cougars, dwarfs, redheads? You play bass, so you’ve got to have some weird kind of fetish to be noticed while you’re being inaudible.
        4. How tired did you get reading all of these half-assed questions before you just decided to choose Andres Ruiz and get it over with?
        5. You couldn’t even cough up a fucking signed CD or two for the prizes? I guess you’re just acting under the assumption that all of us have your band’s entire discography, but it’d still be better than the same poster that every band puts out with the band members posing as “tuff guys”.

        • FuckYourGayEmoHaircut

WIN!!! Elitist Fuck never fails to amuse me…

Anyways, Ryan here are my questions.

1.Being such a great fingerstyle player, do you look down on bassists that use picks?

2.Did you start out on a 4 stirng or were you just born with the abiltiy to play a 5 stringer?

3.Do you prefer solid state or tube amps

4.What the hell is a “thumb” bass anyways? Is it different from a regular bass?

5.Is it true you met the other members of Mudvayne at a YMCA in Illinois?

6.If Mudvayne’s new album really is 100% mixed and mastered why don’t you guys release it already?

7.I saw you and the band at Locofest this year. Are you gonna perform next year too?

8.I hear you used to practice sword swallowing, when are you gonna do some of that shit onstage?

9.Who’s idea was it to wear makeup/costumes in the first place?

Well, that’s all I got.Hopefully I’ll see you and the other members of Mudvayne soon.

    • Brew

1: Everyone knows you’re one of the best metal bassists out there right now, and probably THE best to apply the slap and pop to metal, but my first question is, who was your biggest influence in picking up bass, and then who further influenced you to play metal with it?

2: What was your first dream bass guitar? And to follow up, what did you actually end up with first?

3: When did it first hit you that you were part of one of the most influential heavy metal bands of our generation of rock?

4: Have you always been able to play slap the way you do now, if not, how long did it take you to get to…say…”Dig” playability?

5: My last question, do you feel like you’ve reached your potential or do you think the world can expect more ridiculously amazing bass lines from Ryan Martinie?

    • Tanner

What was the first instument you played?
What made you want to play bass?
Where did you and the band come up with the name mudvayne?
How do you play so good?
Do you play any other instruments?
How long has mudvayne been a band before being famous?

    • Joel

Fuck you robert..you fucking pussy bitch…Ryan smokes you like he does your girls pussy…..little bitch

  • Jimmy

What kind of music influenced you growing up? What got you to pick up the bass in the first place?

I’m a self taught bass player who is still learning. Are you self taught or did you take lessons? What would you recommend to young players?

Earlier Mudvayne songs featured more popping and slapping, while the newer stuff seems more straightforward. Why did you decide to change it up?

Is there a song that you wrote that you’re particularly more proud of and confident in as far as your bass playing ability is concerned? Anything groovy or melodic that you enjoyed or something technical you wrote that you were just stoked you came up with?

Any projects coming out in the near future that you’ve been working on?

    • Jimmy

To further improve on my questions:

LD 50 featured a lot of metal, jazz, and even reggae influences thrown about. What kind of music influenced you growing up? What are you listening to currently?

I’m a self taught bass player who is still learning. Are you self taught or did you take lessons? What would you recommend to young players? Any tips and tricks you care to throw out there?

What got you to pick up the bass in the first place?

Earlier Mudvayne songs featured more pronounced bass playing with popping and slapping, while the newer stuff seems more straightforward. What factors came in to play in this change, and if it was somehow out of your hands, does it piss you off?

Is there a song that you wrote that you’re particularly more proud of and confident in as far as your bass playing ability is concerned? Anything groovy or melodic that you enjoyed or something technical you wrote that you were just stoked you came up with?

I’m looking into expanding my sound with effects and other pedals and accessories. Can you give us a rough rundown of your rig?

Any projects coming out in the near future that you’ve been working on?

  • Nancy Botwin

1.Is there any other style of music in which you are trained in?
    2. How often does your label interfere with the planning of a new Mudvayne album?
3.Your first two albums have more of a experimental sound compared to your most recent ones. The newest album has more of a standard hard rock sound. Why do think that change happened?
4.Does money ever have an influence in the way you write a record?
5.Do you ever become annoyed when there is constant praise around you from people 24/7?
6.Do you know what Crabcore is and what are your thoughts on it?
    7. Have you even read Metalsucks before
8.Were you bothered about the Nu-Metal tag your band had when they started?
    9. How would you describe Mudvayne’s sound in the future?
10.Is there a new band that you think has the potential of being the next Metallica?

    • Deaner

Shouldn’t you be selling weed somewhere in Mexico, Nancy?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrs-C-Ruiz/692879149 Andrés C. Ruiz

    Woah, where to begin.

    1) What personally attracted you to your instrument? That is to say, out of all the instruments out there, why did an instrument as arguably simplistic as the bass have enough of an appeal to you to make you want to not just become proficient at it, but a master at it? What is that ‘magic’ thing that this instrument had for you?

    2) Do you ever feel constrained in creativity with the bass? I’m a bass player myself, and sometimes want to put it down for good and pick up a guitar because of the great many more ways that you can creatively express yourself through simply having 2 extra strings. Even if you have a 6 string or 7 string (or even 10 string!) bass, it just doesn’t feel the same. Have you ever felt like you could better express yourself through another instrument, or is this one the instrument that you can most share your soul with?

    3) Have you ever written something ‘too complicated’ for a bass that your band didn’t like because they felt it was too complex and would thus overpower the guitar? This is something that has happened to me in previous bands, where I’ve written some bass lines or bass ‘riffs’ and the bandmates (guitarists more specifically) get intimidated because they couldn’t really write anything to go with the bass riff. Ever had an experience like that?

    4) Who most influenced your playing? With this, I’m not interested in knowing what bassist you particularly like or look up to, but a bassist whose writing has actually influenced yours. I could go on and on about why Victor Wooten and Jaco Pastorious are the best bass players of our generation, but I’d be lying if I said they actually influence the way I play, that would have to go to Cliff Burton instead. So what bass player has had the most influence on your sound?

    5) Are you as tired as I am about this whole ‘fingers vs. guitar pick’ false dichotomy bullshit?

    6) I’ve read that you began playing bass by teaching yourself how to play certain Metallica songs. Which songs were you most attracted to when you began?

    7) Can you play Metallica’s “Anesthesia”?

    8) Do you like Fish sticks?

    • Tony

I consider myself to be a similar style bassist as you and I am self taught. Were you self taught or did you take formal lessons?

When you pick up your bass to play and your jamming out, what are you thinking about? I know personally I usually just get into the music and play what comes out, theres not thinking about scales or notes, i just play where my fingers go. I know many bassist who think about scales and write and play like that. How do you think with a bass in your hands?

Your bass lines are very complex and melodic with slapping, tapping, and fingering. How do you write such intricate bass lines?

Which bass players influenced you the most to play the way you do?

Have you done anything else besides mudvayne that fans can get a hold of?

Where was the first place you ever performed playing bass and how did it go?

  • http://www.myspace.com/joelbailey Joel Bailey

    Sweet contest…

    1) I know you’ve endorsed Warwick forever.. Do you collect any other basses as well?

    2) You’ve been one of several high profile artists to switch over to Warwick amps lately… how do you feel that affected your sound after using Ampeg for so long?

    3) Tube or Solid state, and why?

    4) You’ve got an extremely aggressive fingerstyle attack. Most players tend to be extremely noisy when playing metal in this fashion.. What excercises would you recommend to players looking to “clean up” their fingerstyle playing.

    5) What effects are you currently using, and do you have any effects on your wish list?

    6) You’ve been known to run your signal through a guitar amp in addition to your bass rig live in the past (at least I’ve read that before)… What model do you use and why?

    7) What (if any) warm up excercises do you do before a show or studio work?

    8) What do you think the most important piece of gear a beginning bassist should start with..? What’s the 2nd piece?

Thanks so much for your time and contribution to heavy music..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zach-Dolan/100000151486558 Zach Dolan

    1) Why did you chose the bass over the regular old guitar?

    2) Do you feel like bass players are ever left out or do not get enough attention? I feel like some bass players are outshined by the guitarists and other members of the band because they think that anyone can play.

    3) I have seen you using the walking, slapping and sweeping techiniques, what is your favorite technique?

    4) Do you ever use a pick?

    5) Does it ever piss you off to see bands not using a bass or just having the bassist play one note the whole song? This always pisses me off.

    6) Who is your favorite current bass player and who is your favorite ever?

    7) How many string do you use on your bass and why?

8 Do you ever get finger cramps during a show? God, those are so annoying.

first off, how are you? i’d prefer to start this on a more friendly note than an “oh my god, its Ryan Martinie!!” note. i hope that everything is well and you are living a happy life at the moment :] here are my questions-

1] i would really enjoy knowing what your personal favourite style of playing is, the best wood that you like, ect ect ect.

2] seeing as i pull my personal style from what i pick up from YOUR personal style, i’d really love to know who truely inspired the inner-bassist in you, and why that person really stood out as a major influence to your playing style.

3] was bass your first instrument, or did you actually play something different as a child, such as guitar or drums, or even a saxophone or anything? and would you rather play bass than any of them, if you did play any of them.

    much appreciated.
    best wishes, Ryan :]

    3) Who is your favorite bass player of all time?

    4) Do you still trip about “hairy man neck”?

    5) In one of the mudvayne dvd’s…I thought I saw something about you putting superglue on your fingers…can you enlighten me on the merits of this phenomenon?

    6) Do you actually play the Vampyre?

    7) I’ve seen you play with Mudvayne twice in Myrtle Beach…did you have time to have any fun while you were there (outside of the joy that comes from performing of course)

    8) Will you buy me a beer for kicking the deuschbag’s ass that posted the 1st question – that guy is obviously not a bass player

    9) I started playing bass when I was 15…how old were you when you got your fingers “wet”?

    10) When you were on the cover of Bass Player Magazine…did you feel like you had arrived…like you had made it?

Question 1: I didn’t start playing Guitar/Bass until I was 15, do you know of any other, Musicians who got a “Late start”, and made it regardless?

Question 2: Mudvayne is known as being a bit (can I say) backwards, in which you play lead (on bass) and Greg plays rhythm (on guitar), was this a conscious decision made by you and the band, or did it just sort of come out of your style of playing and evolve from there?

Question 3: Are your finger calluses as hard as rocks?

Question 4: What is your writing process, do you just kind of jam out in a basement some where with the other guys, or do you actually sit down, and write stuff, take it home and work on it?

Question 5: If you could build your own signature model Warwick what would you change from the Warwick thumb 5 to make it your own?

Good afternoon Ryan. Before I asked my questions I just wanted to let you know how much you have influenced me. I never wanted to pick up any instrument for fear of not being any good at all. But from listening to you, and the rest of Mudvayne play, I was inspired not only to pick up a bass, but also electric and acoustic! I just wanted to thank you for giving me that opportunity.

    Now…..
    as for questions….

I know that everyone is dying to know. What, or who, had inspired you to pick up a bass?

In your musical career have you ever, or considered, playing a different instrument?

At what age had you begun playing the bass?

What advice could you give to an aspiring rockstar in the making?

What had made you join Mudvayne all those years ago?

Are there any current bands you’d ever help out? Like, as a studio musician at least

Who do you think is the best bass player out there?

What are your thoughts on using a pick on the bass?

What do you pull your inspiration from when you are taking part in songs?

In your honest opinion, what do you think is the best song you’ve ever done on the bass??

    Thank you for your time.

    1. When you are on stage and the adrenaline is pumping, do you ever get nervous you will mess up?? Im sure a top noch bass player like yourself can coupe with pressure but has probably had there off days..

    2. While playing bass, are you obligated for backing vocals along with skud? for songs such as not falling and world so cold.

    3. how many hours does it take for practiceing hard bass solos in your songs, and how many hours do you take to get ready for a huge concert, as far as finger stretching and basic warm ups

    4. how many strings and guitars have you gone through for each song? im sure tunning all them and replacing strings happen often

    5. how much practice did you put into making the videos for not falling, happy, and do what you do? the video and audio must of been grueling in the making of those videos.

    6. do you sometimes use slap bass, finger pick bass, or medium – large pick bassing? I don’t know what methods you use for your picking for fast and slow songs so it would be nice if you could explain

    7. as far as equipment goes what do you guys usually perfer on output and gain on your guitars and amps? in which case I mean what type of amps, pedals, and hardware your guys use for your equipment.

    8. Most important! – How did you guys get started, im sure it was no garage started band, there had to be the storyline behind the legends that is mudvayne

    9. as far as you street team goes, do you take great pride in knowing your street team members do thier jobs in making publicity for you guys easy. seems more and more fans turn to you guys because of your inspiring music, your ability to advertise, and the devotion of your fans.

    thank you
    - your street team member and dedicated Fan

What has Mudvayne done for you that no other band could have done?

If you never picked up the bass what do you think you would be doing as a major hobby?

Do you care about what your fans have to say about your inspiration towards them?

If you were not in a band as big as Mudvayne would you still be satisfied with your bass playing skills?

Do you prefer to go on stage with a full stomach or an empty stomach?

Are there any secrets behind the tattoos on your body that we don’t know about?

On the Mudvayne ALL ACCESS TO ALL THINGS DVD you stated that Crazy glue keeps your fingers together. How many tubes of crazy glue do you go through in one tour?

If Mudvayne split up right now what would your first thoughts be?

  • Rayshon

    1. are you tired of reading all these questions?

    2. why did you not just skim over this one?

    3. do you think im gonna ask a serious question now?

    1. How did Mudvayne start, did you guys have musical backgrounds?
    2. Do you ever have to sacrifice ideas you had in the studio so that they would sound better live?
    3. What other music besides heavy metal do you like?
    4. Have you ever played a gig where you were scared for your life?
    5. What’s your drink?
    6. Will you ever play tracks like those two sweet electro versions of Dig again?

    • Rich L

      #2 is a great question!

      Enquiring minds want to know.

  • Brandon Usher

Dude, RYAN!!! you’re sooo bad ass, you do things to the bass that i only wish i could do on my warwick, like every other swingin nut, i too love music and play out and jam with my buds… just wishing that something will hit some day and be able to actually make some money…. n/e way every boy’s dream right… n/e wayz got to see yall in a packed out Amos’ Southend in charlotte, dude that was The Best show i’ve ever been to. i’m a really big fan and fellow bassist. and like all bassist, i never really have the luck to win anything, but i would really love to have the opportunity to have a lil Q & A with you, and of-coarse that bass… that bass would just be a plus…. Thanks Man!!!!!!!

  • Forrest

    1. When creating Bass lines do u go more by theory, or what sounds good to you?

    2. How many hours of practice a day do you usually get in when on a tour?

    3. If you could only slap or pop (not both) which one would it be?

    4. Do you think that all the techniques that can be performed on a bass guitar have been discovered?

    5. What inspires you to push yourself and to get through the plateau?

    6. If you could only use 1 scale which one would it be?

    7. Whats the best way to play “in the pocket”?

    8. Where do you see the style of bass playing going in 10 years?

  • Brendan Seigel

    1. What style of bass appealed to you most when you started? Are you comfortable with your ability to play this style of bass or do you personally think that you can/will improve?

    2. I am an autodidact bass player, and have been playing for about 4-5 years, and it seems like every time I start to make progress I hit a plateau for random lengths of time. Do you have any advice on how to avoid or overcome these plateaus?

    3. I heard from somebody that you were originally in a Nirvana cover band (or rather that Mudvayne started off as a Nirvana cover band), is this true? If so, I’m glad you moved on from there!

    4. I’ve tried for about 2 years now to develop a style inspired by your own, but I seem to have a world of trouble learning even the “simplest” Mudvayne songs (I use quotes because there’s no such thing as a simple Mudvayne bass line!), would it be possible for me to purchase an ounce of your talent? Or at least borrow it so I can finally hear what Death Blooms sounds like through my MTD Heir-5 and ampeg stack?

    5. The last three times I saw you guys in concert, I left with a broken nose (no joke). Next time will you sign the splint they put on my nose in the hospital? Or at least tell the crowd not to headbut the rowdy, overweight, Jewish kid with the crooked nose!

    6. How long have you been involved with music? Did you play any instruments before the bass or learn to play any after starting bass?

    7. Do you think you’ll ever rock the horns and ash makeup again?

    8. Do you think Mudvayne will ever hit a point in its lifetime where it will completely reinvent itself in some epic, unforeseen way? (Think 80′s Exodus versus modern Exodus)

    9. What skin-care products do you use? Seriously… flawless skin.

Final question: Are there any bass players who you envy, or have you finally realized that you’re the craziest one out there?

Thanks for giving me an inferiority complex, haha!

Hey Ryan, or Ryan’s letter picker. Im Ian McCormack from Rockwall Texas. My first Mudvayne CD reached me four years ago, and since that time there has not been a day that I’ve not played that CD in my radio, practiced the songs, or listened closely to the song to find stuff I hadnt before. I live with my Mom alone, while my Dad and three siblings live in Chicago, I’ve been to Peoria several times just for the fact that thats where it all kinda started. I dont have much money, and cant really afford something as amazing as a warwick, but I dream of being as good as you one day and climbing up to being a musician. The money doesnt matter the music does. In a lot of ways Ryan, you are my best friend, it took me till now to realize you have no idea who I am.

    1. You say you like to play stuff that you wouldnt normally be comfortable playing, so which one has been the hardest style for you to pick up?

    2. How would you say you’ve progressed from LD-50 to the New Game?

    3. What was your first bass?

    4. Did you or do you still believe in God?

    5. How rewarding does it feel to go half-way across the world and do what you love almost everyday?

    6. Does stress hit you during music making?

    7. Do you ever feel like you have to make the next album as brutal as possible, but are running out of ideas?

Thank you for reading this, even if it wasnt really you.
I love you man, my hopes are to one day go on tour with you!

First things first, I want to say “Thank You” for all that you’ve done. On your end it may not seem like much, but the way you translate your spirit onto the bass guitar has been quite inspiring to many a bass player, it’s so refreshing to find people that can coherently think outside the box. In the future, I hope to be able to push my ability to this level and possibly live the life.

    Questions:

1]. Why are Warwicks your weapon of choice?

2]. What are some of your favorite bands as of today?

3]. Do you plan on working on a solo album?

4]. What made you realize that music was what you wanted to do?

5]. What do you do when you practice\warm-up nowadays?

6]. Do you own a Fender Jazz?

7]. Do you still take lessons?

8]. Do you have any current day musical inspirations?

    Thank you,

Hello Ryan. I’m also a bass player and in your bass playing I’ve found a lot of creativity and a flawless execution style so having wrote that I must ask the followin so may it help me growing as bass player.

1.- How old were you when you started changing the “concept” for bass playing built and hardly carved in most metalhead minds?
2.-In your very conception of bass playing, what do you think is more important, to play hard or to play more musical?
3.-How many times have you changed your mind about how a bass line must sound before you record it?
4.- wich was the moment that made you aware that you would be playing bass guitar?
5.-Mostly in metal music, there has been a constant fight about if technique is more metal or if feeling is better, what’s your position to that one?
6.- Is frequent that under preasure maybe one looses the edge of creativity, what would you suggest to do under that situation?
7.-As one of your bass lines unfolds during the whole song, it’s hearable that bass has a strong presence in Mudvayne’s music, so with that, what is it you were planning, were you trying to create another musical genre or you just do that by the very feeling in your bass line writting?

Thank you for your time, and thank you for playing diferent and defend bass playing as an instrument and not as the guitar’s b*tch.

Hey Ryan, Great forum, I hope whomever wins appreciates what it takes to get to where you are at.

    1) What is your approach to recording your bass lines? Are you a DI guy, straight through the board, or do you mic your live gear.

    2) Along the lines of the last question, what do you do differently sound wise to get the high end tapping to break through when you’re playing arenas and out door venues, is it just a matter of volume?

    3) A friend of mine was lucky enough to sit in on some of your sessions for your solo album, when is that due out, and how far of a departure from MuDvAyNe is it?

    4) While on the road how hard is it to stay focused on a set list you have been playing for 2 months?

    5) Who does the majority of the writing in MuDvAyNe, seeing how the songs are predominantly bass driven

    6) Why Warwick? other than the obvious sponsorship/endorsement perks

    7) I was lucky enough to share the stage with you @ Locofest in Florida earlier this year, Do you ever get to see any of the bands you play with, and who have you seen recently that blew you away?

Thanks alot man, hopefully if I don’t get picked, you’ll answer these somewhere sometime.. Hope to see you guys again soon, preferably opening for you.

    Hey Ryan-

    1) I love your playing, your tone, your fills, etc. How long does it take you to come up with all of your basslines?

    2) Does the band write over your music, or does everyone bring in things they’ve written and it gets pieced together?

    3) What made you choose bass over guitar?

    4) Have you considered a solo album as a bassist?

    5) If you could have any bass in the world, what would it be? Would it be something custom you put together and organize yourself?

  • http://myspace.com/tmosesbass Terry Moses

    1. Do you agree that the (rockbass) by warwick is one of the worst attemts to make a budget bass since fender’s mexican made basses?

    2. would you actually ever play a rockbass onstage other than use it for glamourous stage pyrotechnics?

    3. Can I have one of your thumb basses?

    4. can you have warwick send me a thumb bass?

    5. how do you feel about the R&B singers/ rappers using other song writers material, and getting more radio play than an actual band that has put alot of time and effort into a product?

    6. what do you think about the song shake your laffy taffy, ha ha?

First let me say that Mudvayne rock and you are my favorite bassist ever!

    1) Looking back, if your music career ended up not working out, what occupation would you have or where do you think life would have taken you?

    2) You obviously like Warwick basses, but I’ve heard that you have recently switched to using Warwick amplification for the new record as well. Why is this?

    3) Do you change the action on your basses for live recordings vs studio recordings? Or is it the same?

    4) Your older material was tuned to F#-B-F#-B-E and B-F#-B-E (as heard in LD50), and for the newer stuff I heard it is tuned G-C-G-C-F and C-G-C-F. If so, why the change?

    5) What would you say has been the single biggest thing that has allowed Mudvayne to stay viable in the music industry, a hard business to survive in, for so long?

    6) Was there ever a point in your career where it sort of dawned on you that your band had “made it”. If so, when was this?

    7) What are your favorite bands to play on stage/tour with?

    8) Have you ever considered doing a solo record? If so, what would it be like? Metal influences like Mudvayne, or would you exhibit more of your jazz influences?

    9) What would you say has been the defining moment of your career so far?

    10) Why did you decide to mostly play with your fingers as opposed to using a pick?

    1. I started playing bass but have picked up different instruments over time. Bass was my first and prefer playing on that over everything else. My technique has improved but my writing has suffered. My problem is I can’t write songs on bass. I can write full songs on guitar and piano no problem, but when it comes to bass, everything I write literally rips something off or it never sticks. It seems the more I improved my technique or learned different ways to play, my writing has suffered. You are a very talented bassist and a good writer so, my question is how have you been able to write music, save for fills, on bass, and help me get back on track on writing?

    2. You’re slap style of bass playing is very well done and unique in metal. I know many metalheads who hate that play style and thinks it should stay out of metal. What influenced you to try that style in mudvayne?

    3. Back on slap bass; I’ve been trying to learn how to play that way as well. Fieldy of Korn plays that way as well but, to my ear, his sound is not as precise and tight as yours. Does that have anything to do with the strings or bass or does that rely on your hands?

    4. I’ve grown so tired of the argument of “pick vs. fingers”. How do you shut that argument up before it become more stupid than it already is?

    5. In today’s metal, the bass sound seems to be no existent. I listen to metal bands today and it doesn’t even sound like a bass player is in the band. Your style definitely sticks out and is part of the mudvayne sound, but why is it the bass guitar has been shut out of metal for so long?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Curley/1187546969 Mike Curley

My questins for bass are as follows.
1.) Did your past history of playing classical guitar help you establish your own personal unique style in playing bass?
2.) When playing what do you highly reccomend as good warm up and practice exercises?
3.) What is (in your opinion) the best way to approach slap bass?
4.) Was Jaco Pastorius (the solo jazz bassist) one of your influnces with your unique playing in metal music using harmonics and establishing your own sound? Les Claypool and Victor Wooten as well.
5.) How long did it take you to become so precise and qick with your playing? Especially with finger plucking, thumb picking, and slapping.
6.) Do you use effecs at all for a lot of your playing?
7.) Have you ever considered using picks of any sort?
8.) Have you ever thought of releasing a solo bass album? Trust me I believe you could deffinately make one of them.
9.) What genre’s of music do you enjoy playing, and songs and artists that you enjoy from those genres?
10.) How many type of stringed basses have you played or love to play? (4, 5, 6, 8, etc.) Sucks that this has to be my last question I had so many more too.

  • Mitch Lamm

What musician influences you the most?

On tour, what city was your favorite to visit? Do you prefer big venues or smaller? And lastly…Did I win?

  • Jeramy Devlin

    Hello Ryan,
I’m from a shitty corrupted town called Providence, Rhode Island. What I do for a living is teach Martial Arts to the youth in the East Side area. I used to play bass in a band to gain some band experience but then quit due to lack of organization within the band. So far I’d like to start my own again (and play HEAVY SHIT for once). I’ve been playing bass since the age of 16. I am now 22. In fact, hearing you’re pieces from the L.D. 50 album is what inspired me to play bass guitar in the first place. So let me start away with these questions:

    1) What gave you the idea in playing bass in the first place?
    2) What kind of gear did you start off with before you started your career?
    3) As a bass player like yourself, do you know of any famous bass players that inspire you most? If so, can you name them for us?
    4) What do you find to be the basic fundamentals of the skills that you’ve acquired?
    5) What do you find easy about playing bass
    6) What do you find difficult about playing bass
    7) Were you self-taught or did you take lessons from a professional which may have build you up to your current level of skill?
    8) If you ever retired from your career, had you ever thought about being a bass teacher?
    9) If you ever competed in a bass dual, who would you compete with: Flea or Les Claypool
    10) As a bass player giving his endorsed merchandise to millions of his crazy fans through a contest, let me ask you this last question: How does it feel to be asked a lot of questions that don’t pertain to the subject by your craziest fans before me? (And be honest) :-P

Well, for me as a bass player, I admire all sorts of skill and am willing to gain and perfect them as the come a long. I feel that in order to become a skilled bass player, we all have to learn from others. Obviously, this is coming from a young Martial Artist. Maybe you can ask me 10 questions about Martial Arts. Lol. Well, take care.

    Another OCG Waster,
    Jeramy E Martin-Devlin Sensei

I’e been playing bass for 2 years and I don’t care if I get the signed bass, I just want to have my questions answered by Ryan, although the bass would still be pretty sic.

1.) Every bassist has there own style of playing and it creates there own unique sound. I believe that yours is just amazing and that your bass lines are crazy and full of furiousity, what i want to know is what drives you to create these bass lines?

2.) What made you choose to play Metal over other genre’s?

3.) What is your recording setup like and how often do you go back to something new your recording and re-write it?

4.) Do you consider yourself and amazing musician?

5.) If somekid came up to you after a show and asked you “How did you become this fantastic bassist in a kick-ass band?” what would you tell him?

6.) Who would you say is the biggest influence in your life towards your music?

    Thanks again Ryan.

  • Harahune

1-Your bass playing is known for having a lot of slapping/popping and not necessarily following the guitar lines. Do you have a method of writing material or do you just go with whatever ideas you might have at the time?

2-When writing your bass parts, how closely do you work with other members of the band?

3-Have other members of the band ever contributed a bass line or idea?

4-If you were never allowed to play bass again, what other hobby or instrument would you pick up if any?

5-If you were going to be commemorated in a museum, what would you display to represent you?

      4. Ever get any martini jokes as growing up?
      5. Has anyone ever asked you how you come up with songs, or what inspired you to play bass, or what the first song you ever learned was, or how you got so amazing at bass? Because if not I would love to.

btw I noticed it said 5-10 questions, sorry.

Ive listened 2 MuDvAyNe since I was in high school, L.D. 50 changed my life. I wore that cd out. I had a bass that my dad bought me and I lost it in a pawn shop cuz my stupid x. Now all I have is my guitar and Ive been trying to replace my bass forever. It would be awesome to get a autographed one. Your a killer bassist Ryan and keep up the good work! Much love

  • Kyle

    Howdy doody.

My name is kyle obviously. first question i have is………
    1. On Mydvayne’s 2nd dvd, you glued your index finger and your pointer finger together, how does that help you play and why do u do it.

    2. In my point of view, when you play music, I don’t believe that good musicians consider themselves bassist, guitarist, or drummers etc. Being part of a band should mean that you see things as a whole and not just single out each person, do you agree with this?

    3. Why do you choose warwick as your “bass of choice?”. What kind of bass did you start on when things first came into perspective.

    4. Why is this site called metal sucks?

    5. How often do u have to shave your creepy man neck?

    6. Would you ever quit writing or playing music if it became monotonous or not fun anymore?

7 – Do you have any preferred bands outside of Illinois?

    1. I’ve followed your playing since i heard (k)now f(orever) at a friends house in late 2000. I must ask are you self taught or lessons?

    2. You probably her this a lot, but how does your “tap/slap” technique become developed? i have tried to imitate it for some time and can’t quite grasp the same sound.

    3. How do you feel about the growing popularity of intricate bass lines since Mudvayne came on the big scene in 2000 as your playing has influenced others to follow?

    4. During your traveling and the evolution of Mudvayne through the years, how do you feel your technique has developed during that time being that your bass lines were already complex from the start of L.D. 50?

    5. On Stage, how do you keep focus to play your constantly moving and complex lines while having the distractions of the crowd, cameras, lighting, etc. AND keep the crowd into the music?

    Thanks, Steve

    Epic contest is epic.

1, You are the God of slap metal bass in my opinion, how long did it take you to perfect your technique with pops and such

2, Your 5 stringer has become an icon of Mudvayne, have you ever thought of going up to a 6 or 7 stringer? For more shreddage?

3, It says on Wikipedia, that you taught yourself Metallica songs when you first started playing. Are they your biggest influence?

4, With todays metal scene as confusing as it is. With scene/emo/goth kids running loose everywhere. Do you wish it were back at the old days. Where everyone went to concerts because they loved the music and wanted to see a band live.

    1. What’s your involvement in Mudvayne’s songwriting process? Especially with songs like “Cultivate” where the bass is very distinct; do you write the bass line first, and the guitar is written around it, or vice versa? Do you give any input to the lyrics or other instruments?

    5 questions for Ryan Martinie

    1) I noticed on the dvd ” All access to all things” at least on 1
or 2 songs, you did backup vocals as well as Gregg doing
backups. I think it was “World so Cold” and possibly another
one. (I’ll have to dig it out and watch it again to see) My
question is, why don’t you do backup vocals a bit more often
for clean parts? Gregg can do backup screams well, but your
    Singing is very good.
I’m sure Chad would love to have some “double vox” making
the sound fuller on some clean bits.

2)How do you feel about the common band musician’s
problem of playing too technical stuff that doesn’t match the
music? I know that you are a very technical bassist to begin
with, and have seen interviews with you stating that on L.D.
50 the band was in the “show off stage” for lack of a better
term. Nowadays you all seem to just want to play together
and just match what the mood of the song is.

3)What bands were you in BEFORE MuDvAyNe?
As a youngin…up to being in Mudvayne.

4)BEFORE you were a signed band, how did you go about
practicing and writing songs? To be more specific…What
was a typical band practice like in Mudvayne at the
beginning? Or even when you were in other bands.
(I.E…Come in,have a beerski, warmup with a few songs, play
    the set through…..etc.)

    5)One more…
Everyone knows that you’re a very fit person. Obviously you
must have some type of regimin too keep lean and muscular,
what might that be, and how do you eat well while
    travelling on tours?

  • Erik N.

Hey bro, got a few of my own questions.

    1. What techniques would you suggest to strengthen the pinky?

    2. What Is the best sounding amp in your opinion?

    3. What Influences helped you the most while learning the bass?

    4. On a less serious note. Exactly how many chicks do you suppose you’ve fucked since Mudvayne?

    5. Are there any music schools you would recommend to a bassist trying to make it in the music industry?

  • Gabriel Lucas

Well, I’m from Brazil and love Mudvayne. I’m the drummer of a cover band of yours called Sounds Of Chaos. It’s fucking hard to play your songs, and I have to recognize that the bass is the hardest of all. You put a lot of personality in your songs Ryan.
    And here goes my questions…
    (1) – Which bands had inspired you?
    (2) – Who are (were) your icons in therms of bass methods and techniques?
    (3) – Do you have any tutorial in video? (sorry if this question is obvious to you, but living in Brazil I have some difficults finding any kind of material).
    (4) – What’s your recommendation for a band who’s trying to play your songs? (althought trainning a lot)
    (5) – Do you have plans to play in Brazil?
    (6) – About your own songs, which is your favorite?
    (7) – Do you aprecciate any brazilian band?

Ryan, here are my 5 questions about bass playing:

1: Can you give me a rundown of the brand and gauge of the strings you prefer?

2: How loud is your stage volume typically (compared to your drummer’s level) ?

3: Do you always play with your fingers, or do you ever use a pick (and if so, what size pick) ?

4: What effects do you use, if any?

5: At what stage of the songwriting process do you add your bass parts?

and one more question for you:

6: Why did you guys stop wearing the makeup? I thought the makeup made you guys stand out, but now you look ordinary. I think your audience would like to see those devil horns again.

    Thanks

  • Robski

Hi Ryan i’ve got a couple of questions for you,

    1. You Seem to be such a precise and technical bassist even under the bright lights of the stage but do you ever get uncomfortable under the red light in the recording studio? If so what do you do to get over it?

    3. Mudvayne Do alot of competitions for the fans and pull out all the stops for them at live performances but whats the nicest thing a fan has ever done for you?

    4. What emotions/thoughts go through you as you walk off stage how has this changed over the years and how does venue size effect this?

    5. If / When things get to much for you or too stressfull what/who do you turn to to help you get past it and has that always been what you do?

    6. Given the chance, would you give up all that you’ve earnt and learnt over the Mudvayne years to relive the whole Mudvayne experience right from the very begining? If So which bits whould you look forward to doing again?

Hello. First off I would like to say that Ryan D. Martinie is, without question in my mind, the best bass player of all time. And without argument from outside sources, the best bass player of modern metal and rock. It was he who inspired me to play bass in the first place and through his music and rythms taught me everything I know.
Firstly my question woul be what inspired the young Peorian to pick up the bass in the first place?
Second, how did you manage to get into MuDvAyne after that barklay fellows departure?(you are much better by the way)
Third, Mudvayne always has very strange ie. Badass time signatures and tuning, where do you start when writing the basslines? And finish for that matter.
Fourth, how did you (k)now what bass was right for you? I know the sound, look, and, well everything about the Warwick Vampyre is awesome but what basses came before and was there some sort of process of elimination?
Fifth, how is life on the move from you’re personal perspective. Do you get used to it or is that people aquarium not the best place to be?
    Sixth, Whats is the suitcase?!?!?!
And lastly, what advice would you give to an aspiring metal bass player like myself?

I appreciate your time and I wish you the best. I’ll be ragin’ to MuDvAyNe on September 5th and hopefully hear from Mr. Martinie shortly thereafter. I appreciate everyone putting this together and hopefully I’ll be playin the Warwick for my next gig!

As sincere as anyone will be,
    Kameron Moncus

Ryan, you have been one of the 2 biggest bass influences (along with Les Claypool) on me for the past 7 years of my bass playing career. Seeing you play live was one of the greatest experiences ever!

    1. Being a college student, with my major being Music Theory and Composition, I am well aware that pretty much each individual person constructs their music in their own way. How do you go about constructing your lines and riffs?

    2. I know that you have a significant Jazz background in your prolific bass career. I have been playing jazz for the past couple of years and find it fascinating and exciting to play, and thus love implementing it into all other genres i play. I pick up on elements of this in your playing too. How much of an influence has jazz bass played on you and your role in Mudvayne?

    3. Some people name their cars, others (like me) name their guitars. All of my guitars and basses have been named based on what they represent. My latest edition, being an Ibanez SR755 5-string bass is named after you and Les Claypool (Leslie Ryan) as a symbol of my advancements with the instrument thanks to your influences. Do you name your guitars or have any type of corny habits with your instruments?

    4. Everyone starts somewhere when they begin to play. What was your first set up (guitar, amp, any pedals, etc.)?

    5. Musicianship is obviously important for any member of a band, but in the public eye as you are, showmanship is also important. You always put on a great show for the masses, but how important is showmanship to you in a concert?

    6. I have been spouting off about what an influence you have been on me, but what about you? What influences did you have growing up and beginning your bass playing, and what influences have you had in more recent years while you have been at the professional level?

    7. Being in the limelight and considered one of the best bassist around, where do you see your career going from this point? Is there any particular goal that you have yet to achieve that you wish to?

Thank you very much for this opportunity. I hope that the contest brings you plenty of fun and thought provoking questions, and that if you happen to read mine, they don’t bore you too badly! I look forward to seeing you perform again soon.

    6) Have you considered using a Stand-Up Bass for at least one show?

    7) What is your favorite piece of gear that you own?

  • Dustin Parton

First I just want to say I love your bass playing style and I love Mudvayne!!!!! Saw you guys last fall at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City, MO! People think I’m nuts because I am a police Sergeant and I listen to Mudvayne!!! All the other officers at work listen to country or rap! It would be great to win a Warwick, especially if it was signed by you!!! With my police salary I cannot afford one!!!! Anyways here are my 10 questions and keep up the great work:

-How did you first hear about Warwick bass guitars and who turned you on to them?
-How did you meet the guys from Mudvayne and end up joining the band?
-Did you self-learn your finger tapping/slap and pop style of bass playing or did someone teach you?
-Who are your personal music influences?
-Did you like wearing the stage make-up or do you prefer not wearing it?
-Are you married, got kids, family?
-Have you thought about a signature bass with Warwick like P-Nut from 311?
    -How old are you?
-Do you or have you ever given bass lessons?
-How many Warwick bass guitars do you own?

  • ceth carter

1.With experience level equal, who do you think makes a better transition, a guitar player to bass or a bass player to guitar?
    2. What is your opinion on the bass playing purist theory that picks are for pussies? You being a very accomplished slap and finger style player do you view picks as just another tool of the trade that thas its time and place or do you view it as a crutch that really has no place when it comes to bass playing?
3.What is the one tip or technique that you have learned in the past that was possibly the most important to your development as a bass player? For example after practicing and practicing and working forever what one thing did you pick up that just put you over the top and made bass really click for you?
4.Are there any plans in your future of possibly puting together some sort of solo instrumental type of album, maybe a jazz or fusion type project to really showcase your creative skills on the bass?
5.If you were at some point in the future to have some major change in your life that required you to leave or take time away from Mudvayne during a touring cycle, who do you think would be the best fit to take your place while you were away, someone you think could fit the part perfectly and is talented enough to come in on short notice without having to do much altering to your parts.

  • Devastator

    1. Did you start out in any other bands before joining Mudvayne?

    2. Which is more important in having a good sound, a better bass or a better amp, cab, head, ect? I know both is the best answer.

    3. I noticed that some bass players who play slap have their strings higher off the fretboard while others have theirs really close to the fret board, does it make a difference depending on style, or is it personal preference? If so, what do you use?

    4. How are you able to tune your lowest string to F# and G, whenever I try to tune lower than A, it sounds like my amp is submerged in mud, how do you get a clean tone with these low of notes?

    5. From changing your tuning from F#-B-F#-B-E to G-C-G-C-F, do you play older Mudvayne songs a half step higher, change basses, or play it on different frets?

    6. Does it bother you that for some bands you cannot hear what the hell bass is doing at all? Ex: in most bands the bass follows the guitar while in Mudvayne, you come up with your own bass lines to use?

    7. How do you consistently challenge yourself when writing your music? Or do you have a comfortable “groove” you get yourself into, also when writing, do you think about what would fit well with the song or do you try to come up with technical bass lines and have the song work its way around that?

    8. Have you ever thought of using fretless basses? If so, why?

    9. Have you ever writing solo material, which includes stuff for other bands, or instrumental textures? If so, are you planning on releasing it?

    10. Finally, what’s your favorite moment throughout the years in Mudvayne? Why?

Thanks for looking at my questions,
I’ll keep practicing my Ibanez soundgear 5, so I can work my way up to your caliber
always a fan, of your playing and the band.

    Questions:

2.) What do you recommend on learning how to start playing the bass (e.g. note reading, finger movements)?
3.) What motivated you to play the bass?

    we’ll keep it simple.

2.)What is the reason for never wearing a shirt, by the way?
3.) Is it weird to see yourself on T.V./ in music videos? I know I feel pretty weird when I hear myself on an answering machine!
4.) Do you have to focus pretty hard to play like a bad ass and still move around on stage? or does it just sort of happen after so long?
5.)I take it back! you do wear a shirt! good thing I reviewed hey? so then what deciphers the shirt wearing?
6.) Okay I’ll ask a few music related questions, what inspires you for your lyrics, they’re very intelligent.
7.) In a few shots of dullboy I noticed a few of you wearing robes, were they really yours? that would be the best. ever.
    8.)Will you please call me?

  • Mary J

To be honest I have no questions for you.
The Bass is the hottest instrument anyone could ever play. And you absolutely kick ass!!!
I’m only entering because I have a friend that I would love to win this bass for as a gift.
He’s 23 and is in a dirty metal band- Blood of Rome
Their actually pretty good and personally I think if anyone I know should win this it would be him.
He’s a good kid who works hard to take care of his family and when he plays he plays hard and has a passion that I have not seen in a very long time. Next to his family music is his life and he strives to make it happen!!
When he’s on stage he gives his all…. And he is the same way when it comes to his job and his family!!!

Anyways….You guys kicked ass at Pain in The Grass in Seattle, WA

  • Ashley

How long have you been playing bass guitar?

When I saw you preform live you jumped all over the stage, have you ever injured yourself while performing?

When you were a kid, did you dream of becoming anything other than a bass guitarist in a band?

Who inspired you to learn how to play the bass the most?

If you could do apsolutely anything in the world with what would you do?

Has a fan ever scared you?

  • Ack Ackermen

    1. Have you ever played until your fingers were blistered and bleeding?

    3. Do you feel more relaxed the bigger the arena/stages get?
    4. Do you ever play around with any computer recording?
    5. Does country music make you feel like throwing up?

    Thanks

  • Joshua Gonzales

Wow, this an awesome opportunity. Just want to say that you guys are absolutely amazing. As some have said in previous comments, one of the most influential and relevant bands out right now. And you are by far one of the most talented bassists around right now. My questions for you are:

    1. I randomly came across the band’s music and instantly became captivated by it. I soon realized that it was the unique bass playing that brought each track to life. It was because of you that I decided to pick up the bass and learn. So my question is, who and/or what influenced you to decide to play the bass?

    2. When you are creating your basslines for various tracks, do you essentially create them on your own, or do you combine your ideas with inspiration from other bassists that are also playing?

    3. When I listen to your different basslines I am always like “Man, that one is my favorite, ” or “No, its actually this one.” I have found that I can’t choose a single one over another since they all offer something different to the person listening. Are there any particular ones that you have written that you are more proud of or that you have a better feeling of accomplishment after writing?

    4. What is your ultimate goal as a bass player/all around musician?

    5. Just sitting and playing the bass is something that I have found calms my never, kind of like a therapeutic exercise. At my most stressed times, I practically run to it. Does playing have the same kind of effect for you?

    6. I personally don’t like using a pick at all while playing my bass. There are just so many sounds and possibilities from not using one. What is it about your style that led you to choose it?

    7. What gear do you prefer to use and why?

    8. What kind of music did you listen to growing up and how did it, if at all, influence the music that you write?

    9. When did you decide that being a full-time musician was the path for you?

Thanks for your time. Just wanted to say, as an endless amount of people have already said, you are a true inspiration. Keep up the good work and I am sure that the number of people that you inspire to pick up an instrument will continue to grow.

    Thanks

  • Jonathan Flores

    1. Wat inspired you to play bass?

    2. What style of bass playing do u recommend to learn? and from all that you play which do you like best?

3.What tuning do you prefer from all those different types of tuning?

    4. From all the basses out there which one did you find hardest to play(acoustic, electric; 4string, 5string, 6string)?

You showed me two finger exercises for my playing hand: the 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 3 one with the thumb, index and middle fingers and a second one involving the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers. I wanted to know what the pattern was for the four finger exercise?

Gotta say that I love your style of playing and the way that you incorporate many different styles into the mudvayne sound, and you, single handedly, have gotten me to start using chords and other styles in my playing. You have truly created a very unique way of playing that nobody will ever be able to duplicate.

    1. How has playing in Mudvayne or music in general affected your personal life as far as family and so forth?

    2. Who influenced you the most seems to be the most common question, but what style of music or bands did you grow up listening to and say, I want to do that like _______ is doing?

    3. While growing up, did you originally play the bass, or did you sort of fall into playing this marvelous and well overlooked intrument.

    4. I noticed on a dvd that you occasionally provide back up on some minor vocal parts. Is it difficult for you to play the way that you play, and throw in those vocal lines as well?

    5. As far as you know, does the original bass player from MudVayNe hold any grudges towards you or any ill beliefs?

    6. Do you like to play any other brand of bass other than warwicks?

    7. I’ve recently ran across another brand of bass called “Tiburon”, which uses alot of the same types of dense african wood that Warwick’s use. What is your opinion on this bass?

    8. Do you have a preferance of the type of wood used for your basses, or do you just pick one up, play it, and say I like this sound?

    9. I know that you use ampeg bass rigs, but I was wondering how you feel about mesa bass rigs.

    10. Do you prefer playing in open tunings, dropped tunings, or standard tunings?

  • Tim Day

Mudvayne Rules, come on lucky bass!!! it just says leave a comment….so you can win a chance to ask questions….

    • D. Hinkle

“Here’s how it’s going to work: Post a comment below, using a valid email address (winners will be contacted by email) in which you ask 5-10 questions about bass playing for Ryan Martinie to answer.”

      Learn to read, retard.

      • Craig

        wow your witty P. Tinkle.

  • Yannick Bünger Kristensen

    Hey mr. Martinie.

    1. Who is/are the biggest influence(s) on your playing style?

    2. In some of Mudvayne’s tracks the bassline is ‘living it’s own life’ – how do you write your basslines?

    3. Which exercises do you use in order to keep up and improving your bass playing?

    4. Slap bass in metal is kind of odd. Where did the idea come from? Or was it an idea founded when Barclay was in the band?

    5. Being a well-known slap bass player have you ever thought about recording and releasing a DVD with lessons and ‘how-to-play’?

Thank you and see you in Denmark – hopefully.

  • Chris de Peau

Yeah so… as an Australian resident I can’t even enter this competition… but I have one question…

    1. After the brilliance that was L.D. 50 and The End Of All Things To Come, being that they were truly inspired metal masterpieces that pushed boundaries and forced bands around you to pull up their socks and use their imaginations when writing music, why did Mudvayne completely and utterly sell out to this “whatever-core” polished production, pop metal, uninspired tripe like mash of shit stereotype that has become so rife in the popular metal world… You brought the word math to the masses… and now you write the most bland and talentless crap I’ve ever heard… awesome work dude… and I’m not blaming you… you’re one of, if not the best bass player that metal will ever see… and I respect your work on the instrument even on The New Game… but seriously… why?

    • steve-o

      fuckin pwnt!

  • Jeff Cotter

Before my questions, I just have to say the generic stuff. In all truth, I heard the Dig single when I was in 6th grade, and when I heard the thumb thumb POP, I was hooked! I was playing only upright bass then, and you single handedly mind raped me into trying to play your lines on my upright, My first year learning. (Needless to say, it didn’t work entirely well, but I figured out a few haha). I am not entering this for the bass, although that would be amazing, I would rather just talk to the Ryan Martinie that skull fucked me with the groove from Nothing to Gein and revolutionized how I played bass and thought about metal.

    1. Do you have Jazz or classical background for your bass playing? Many of the styles you have made your own seem to be truly jazzy at times, and as a bassist that plays Jazz and Classical still, that jazz hooks and grabs in all kinds of different ears.

    2. I am from Fairbury, Illinois originally. There I grew up surrounded by corn fields and monotony, and Peoria was just an hour or so away so I wonder, did the monotony and never changing land of Illinois help influence you into loving metal in some way?

    3. Your techniques are a big part of what set you apart from almost all other bassists in your genre. Did you ever think about them beforehand when developing them, or was it more of just a naturally occurring playing style?

    4. When on stage, from my own eyes through Atlanta Georgia, you carry an energy of complete insanity and yet play flawlessly even though your parts are spastic and intricate. When playing for a live audience, do you focus on playing, your stage presence, or do you just ball-to-the wall?

    5. Do you like Eminem’s first 3 CD’s?

    6. For your album recordings, you play through Greg’s guitar heads and amps giving you all that sweet high end thats added to your records. Do you have any advice as far as equipment goes as to how to achieve high, mid, and low end that sustains and hits like you do?

Thanks for your time, or whoever reads these for you. I hope that I see you again live soon!

    1. With which other member of Mudvayne do you feel as a bassist it is most important to have good chemistry with, and how does this chemistry help you write better bass lines?

    2. What measures do you take to make sure that all of your bass lines are unique, and is there ever an urge to use a bass line that is very similar to another one that you have already written? If so, how do you fight this urge?

    3. I noticed you won an award or two for classical singing when you were young. Why do you not sing more backup, both live and on records?

    4. When away from the band, how often do you practice, and what do these practice sessions entail?

    5. What turned you on to sword-swallowing, and do you still partake in this hobby today?

    6. When away from the band, do the members of Mudvayne stay in touch, or do you guys leave each other alone until you hit the studio or the road again?

    7. What is your favorite Mudvayne song to play, and what was the writing process like, along with where your inspiration came from, for the bass line behind that song?

You are by far my favorite musician in any band, although Mudvayne does happen to be my favorite band. Your bass lines are an inspiration to bassists everywhere. Thank you for reading my questions.

    3. I started and learned bass on an upright playing classical and jazz, this background and training for me has a heavy influence in my playing now (I play metal now). My question is, what is your greatest influence in your style, whether it be a genre or specific musician you looked up to?

    4. How much time do you spend just practicing? How much time did you put into it practicing when you first started?

    5. Now that you play in huge venues in front of thousands of people, do you ever miss the more intimate settings, small clubs/bars and your best friends keg party in the back yard? lol

    6. I continue to be amazed by your stage presence and energy when you play. I’m fairly new to the metal stage and it’s not so easy all the time. Sometimes I have to concentrate more on the riff if it’s more difficult. Did it take you a while to develop the ability to play correctly and clearly while maintaining such a great stage show or is it something that comes naturally to you?

Rock on Ryan! Thanks for participating in a contest like this.

1.) Some virtuosos claim to practice an exorbitant number of hours per day (8 hours or more) while others claim to never practice at all, and still others find a happy medium. What’s your professional recommendation on this matter?

2.) One of my instructors constantly emphasizes listening to the masters. Which bassists, be they jazz/classical/metal/funk/polka-rap/etc., would you recommend to aspiring bassists?

3-4.) Could you describe your right-hand technique? I guess this acts as two questions 3.) How many fingers do you pluck with: all right-hand fingers like Sheehan, two fingers like Steve Harris, or just one finger like Jamerson’s “hook”? AND 4.) Where do you attack the strings (by the bridge, between the pickups, on the neck, etc.), and how does this affect your tone?

5.) What is your preferred level of action on your basses? (i.e., ultra low a la Wooten or Manring, or high action a la Will Lee or Jamerson, or somewhere in between?) Your percussive/slap style suggests low action, but we want to hear it from the horse’s mouth. ;)

6.) When did you discover Warwick basses, and what was your first Warwick?

7.) Have you ever used a Kahler tremolo system on any of your basses?

8.) Are there any exercises you’d recommend to help bassists with odd time?

9.) Do you warm up before a show? This may seem like a stupid question, though some bassists claim they never do warm-ups (Steve Harris, for example), while some not only warm-up, but also warm-down (John Myung).

10.) What are the most important qualities a bassist should look for in a teacher?

Optional non-contest bonus question: Great music, from metal to jazz (*cough* Mingus *cough*), is often pissed off. What pisses YOU off?

    1. What bassists do/did you look up to when first picking up the instrument?

    2. What tips/knowledge would you want to pass on to aspiring bassists?

    3. What kind of rig do you run? Bass/hardwaae amps etc…

    4. It seems to me that it take a certain kind of person to want to play an instrument that is for all intents and purposes felt more than it is heard, yet your style of playing really brings the bass to the forefront to the music. What drove/inspired you to NOT be the seen but unheard bassist?

    5. Are the little red devil horns ever coming back?

    6. What qualities do you feel make a bass “right” for you?

    7. Any side projects?

  • http://Hey Matt Barcomb

    1. You are by far the best and fastest bass player ive ever seen/heard. I started playing bass and watched so many videos of mudvayne live just to try to catch some moves you do.

    2. Did you start off learning slap/pluck? If so thats gotta hard ass work.

    3. I actually have a Warwick Vampyre rock bass, ive had it for years now. I have a couple other basses but I cant play any other one Warwick as the best and hardest sound out there. Was that the first bass you started using?

    4. When I first picked up my bass, you were my idol. When you first started playing did you have an idol?

    5. What is your fav. amp to use with Warwick?

    6. How do you throw in jazz bridges into a metal song so perfect?!

    7. Even though you guys have been together for years now and have headlined many shows, do you still get nervious?

    8. I gotta ask, how many hours a day do you practice?

    9. When your on stage jumping around and everything does that keep you on beat and more into the music? If so has that ever thrown you off a little?

    10. Where did you learn how to throw different play styles into one song? Like Happy, when you start slapping the bass higher up and your just poking at the strings.

Why does it have to be a Rockbass, and a Vampyre at that? Nasty. Why not actually keep in the Mud’vayne’ and sponsor a Thumb, neck through would be nice. Or a limited edition, nice! As for the gothic wannabe’s with their evil scary jagged little guitars and basses, no thanks.
