WHAT I’VE LEARNED FROM MARDUK
Thursday, August 27th, 2009 at 11:00am by Axl Rosenberg
I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve actually learned a lot from metal. For example, when I was a kid, I heard Axl Rose use the word “cunt” in the song “Bad Obsession” and subsequently asked my dad, “What’s a cunt?” To which he responded, “Your mother’s sister.” And I instantly knew exactly what a cunt was.
Metal continues to educate me every day, and this morning has been no different. Marduk have a new song, “Phosphorus Redeemer,” streaming on their MySpace page, and while I initially thought the title was just a nonsense combination of two words, it turns out that Marduk didn’t invent the phrase. Amazing!
Says this website, which I’ve never heard of before and can’t really tell how credible it is:
Satan, according to Christian legend, was once Phosphorus, the redeemer. Also a personified aspect of the astral fire and light in the anima mundi. Eliphas Levi speaks of the interior phosphorus, meaning the astral light.
So, there ya go. Black metal’s quixotic war on Christianity continues.
ANYWAY, the song is pretty cool and you should definitely check it out. It comes off the band’s new album, Wormwood, which will be released October 13 on Regain Records.
And don’t forget that Marduk are headlining the MetalSucks co-sponsored U.S. Plague Tour 2009 with Nachtmystium, Mantic Ritual, Merrimack and Black Anvil (on select dates). Here’s the tour itinerary:

Metal Sucks is co-sponsoring? And not a single nu-deathcore band on the tour?? WOW!
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLz
Gonna be a great tour: Marduk, Nachtmystium AND Merrimack. Can’t go wrong. Glad to see the Toronto date is at a smaller venue than the Mayhem show was, too.
Thats a pretty sweet tour although i’d really be going for Nachtmystium. Shame its in America, I’d kill to see those guys in England.
They are playing in England in a few months supporting Absu!

I read the opening passage, snorted coffee on my keyboard from laughing, and my co-workers were like, What the Hell is wrong with you?
Damn you, Axl.
Funny stuff…although you may be giving the majority of your readership a little too much credit in assuming that they would know what “quixotic” means.
Black metal sucks. Facepaint? Give me a fucking break.
Not every band wears corpsepaint.
So, black metal sucks because a lot of the bands use “facepaint”?
Uhh…yeah…that’s like saying you hate old thrash bands some of the band members wore bullet belts.
My friends and I discovered black metal by buying a Marduk album that had a cd-rom video. We thought it was the funniest shit ever. For this reason I can never take Marduk seriously.
I wonder if Eliphas is related to Eyal…
No, he was a 19th century magician.
This kind of reminds me when I learned that “Megadeath” wasn’t just a cheesy put toghether title for the band, its an actual word to describe a large number of people dieing at once due to a mass catastrophe like a nuclear bomb . . . metal dudes are smart!
and btw Kyle, the CORPSE paint may be a bit obsolete at this point, but there is a hell (no pun intended) of a lot more to black metal then just the image.
Corpse paint has been extremely watered down, primarily by western bands. Marduk (despite being Swedish) we’re one of the early forerunners of the second wave of black metal alongside Dark Throne and Mayhem (I’m talking late 80’s early 90’s) and they haven’t watered down their sound one bit, in fact they’ve gotten even more evil and extreme. So if anything, Marduk wearing corpse paint is staying true to their roots. With that said I kind of miss Legion era Marduk (Panzer Division, as well as live albums with hillarious song introductions). For their raw and stripped down approach I feel they’ve gotten a bit too fast for their own good and don’t quite pull it off as convincingly as say a band like 1349 (first 3 records). Not hating on Marduk as I’m sure I’ll end up at the Reggie’s show in Chicago (I’ve played there a bunch) so I can chant “We feel nothing… And are nothiiiing!!!” With everyone else. Just saying I feel like lately they’re playing fast for the sake of fast and it lessens the impact a bit for me. Whatever… Black Fucking Metaaaal!!
I can’t wait for this album, Arioch/Mortuus is one of the greatest vocalists of black metal. BTW love the new track; hope the new album measures up, they really set the bar high with the last album.
I agree Daniel Guzman – Romans was an epic album. Hail Marduk!
I always thought that the Christian Satan was Samyaza, the “infamous rebel” who was once Satanel. Then again, Samael, the angel of death, tempter and blind god is also seen as Satan. Satan is a lot of things and appears to be any entity that isn’t the Christian God.
marduk sucks ass, for real.
whats up with Satanism and Christianity, get the fuck over it, its stupid little bitches that listen to bands like marduk, go athiest or go fuck yourself.
