    Interesting that they’re using drums. That was the big aesthetic risk taken by early Apocalyptica (and all the “string quartet tribute to…” projects): no drums meant you were missing a great deal of the power of the music. Sort of like translating the words but leaving out the vowels. Listen to the first Apoc album and compare something like “MOP” with “Unforgiven”. You can really hear how boring Apoc’s version of “MOP” is for most of the time (excellent virtuosity on the guitar solos excepted) because there’s really no “there” there. What’s missing from the song is the propulsion of the drums (this isn’t about Lars). “Unforgiven” works a little better without drums because its based on a more traditional harmonic language (which isn’t to say it’s better…dammit I hate disclaimers but too many metal fans are idiots) that translates better to the harmonic and melodic focus of violins and cellos.

    Apoc has backpedaled and now has a drummer (or has recorded with them), so they now sound like a strange, but nevertheless recognizable “rock” band. Why they did that, I don’t know. Why these girls are doing the same thing, I also don’t know.

    I am not entirely sure I understand what the interest is lately in mediocre music being performed by people who happen to be decent looking women. It strikes me as somewhat odd that so many seem so quick to believe a much higher quality exists merely on account of who is performing.
