ALRIGHT, KIDDIES: GO LISTEN TO MEGADETH’S ENDGAME

Thursday, September 10th, 2009 at 4:18pm by Axl Rosenberg

Endgame

I’ve been saying it since July: Megadeth’s Endgame their best album since Countdown. It’s the first Megadeth album that I’ve wanted to listen to all the way through more than twice since that record, and the first Megadeth album that didn’t make me pine for the return of Marty Friedman. It rocks.

Roadrunner will release the album this coming Tuesday, but you don’t have to ’til then to hear it: it’s streaming in its entirety right now on ‘Deth’s MySpace page. So enjoy it, kiddies. I especially like the song “Bodies.” It has kind of a “Symphony” feel to it.

Oh, and because I like stirring up shit, I’m going to end this post with this statement:

Endgame > Death Magnetic

I look forward to reading as you all argue.

    “Endgame > Death Magnetic”
no one but metallica are going to argue that.

      ____________ > Death Magnetic
no one but metallica are going to argue that

      FIX’d

    • groverXIII says:

Eh… I personally liked Death Magnetic better, but I really liked Death Magnetic.

Seriously. I think it’s the nostalgia factor.

      • fantasyh says:

I think Death Magnetic, would be 10x better, if the songs were half as long.
As for Endgame – I like it a lot. It’s straight up Megadeth. Has a Rust/Peace Sells feel in some songs, and Symphony in others. I also enjoy how they let Broderick run a bit wild, resulting in songs having three solos again.

  2. Mzi Noruka says:

    ………better than death magnetic?………really?……..

  3. Rik says:

Both this and DM are decent but neither are good enough for me to actually bother deciding which is better than the other.

  4. Wyzt says:

What isn’t better than death magnetic. Even that shitty six feet under song is better than death magnetic.

  5. slave_screams says:

Some someone explain all the hate towards DM? And not based solely on the so-called sound compression – It’s their best record since master imo; while they certainly weren’t breaking new ground, it was a hell of a lot better than load/reload or st anger – and the new Megadeth record sounds great, and I havn’t listened to them in over 10 years

    • tom says:

I agree that it wasn’t bad at all (and production-wise, people should be glad it didn’t sound like Reek of Putrefaction), but it was not better than AJFA or the Black album, not by a long fucking way.

Anyway, Endgame has been a lot like Crack the Skye for me, first listen a bit underwhelmed, just because it’s not necesarily what i was expecting, but on subsequent listens the hooks have appeared, and its fucking brilliant, definately best since countdown.

      • slave_screams says:

Lol, well, reek came out in, what? ‘88? So i’m glad it didn’t sound like it was recorded in a cave somewhere alright – I think the feeling I would best use to describe that record was one of ‘relief’ – having been a big fan in my youth, I had drifted away from Metaliica in and around the black album and only came back to them after DM – I would still go and see them live and it’s no coincidence that they rarely play anything off load/reload or st anger – Crack the syke is still my favourite record this year, it gets better with each listen, and i’ve listened to it countless times at this stage; and I agree this is the first time I have been excited to hear a Megadeth record since countdown; now if only they would bring the slayer tour to Ireland……

        • tom says:

my reference to reek was just an example of when an engineer “ruins” a record, which can hardly be said for DM, which is what so many people have said.

    • Bob says:

      It’s a terrible fucking album? I mean, really…that’s all I’ve got.

      • Santa Claus says:

I’d Have to agree. Its there best album since whenever but I didnt find it anything to get excited about. I gave it a chance but I found it a yawnfest.

  6. joshkid says:

maybe Endgame > Death Magnetic, but one things for sure: Metallica > Megadeth

    • Anthony says:

      Win.

And even though it hasn’t come out, i’m sure both Endgame and Death Magnetic will >>>>>> World Painted Blood

      • Gospel of Madness says:

        hahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahaa….you’re kidding, right?

        • Fufkin says:

Oh Slayer? World Painted Blood will probably be full of more boring attempts at reliving Reign In Blood, rather than slowing things down a little with some decent melody a la South Of Heaven.
Jeff’s songs might prove me wrong, Kerry’s sure as hell won’t

          • Gospel of Madness says:

“World Painted Blood will probably be full of more boring attempts at reliving Reign In Blood”

Everything Metallica has done past their first four albums has been boring as fuck.

Megadeth is pretty much just as boring, rehashing the same riffs sprinkled with crappy vocals.

At least their is some consistency with Slayer, I’m not looking for melody when I want to listen to a Slayer album, I just need it to kick ass, and most of their albums do, which is more than I can say for Metallica and Megadeth.

If I wanted my metal to slow down and melodic, I would go throw on some Insomnium or Slumber.
sometimes I just want to ride the wave of bad assery that is Slayer.

          • Fufkin says:

I don’t agree with your rubbishing of Megadeth but I also I didn’t say anything about the worth of Metallica’s last four releases.
Sounds like you’ll be more than happy with the next Slayer album, I’m pleased for you but equating South Of Heaven’s sound with Insomnium is odd – the latter isn’t that slow anyway.
South Of Heaven is a consistently very good album, as are the songs on Seasons – I don’t think a single Slayer album has been consistently good on that level since – consistently average, yes.

  7. 666ogre666 says:

You and the dude from Hookinmouth.net need to stop copying each other or eventually your gonna have the same blog. And with that i shall say that i enjoyed Death Magnetic better then Endgame although maybe i just havent listened to it enough

  8. Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt says:

    Axl > 100% correct sir.

  9. noobpotato says:

    Too right axl

  10. iolanach says:

Of course Endgame is better then Death Magnetic, but so sticking your cock inside a tigers mouth.

  11. RomuluXX says:

Am I the only person who thought this album was shit?

    • Gospel of Madness says:

You’re not alone….I am here with yooooouuuuu.

That was my ode to Micheal Jackson.
I never really liked Megadeth, and I know I am in the minority, since people look at me like a fell out of a tree when I mention my distain for Mustaine.

    • Muro says:

I don’t think it’s a shitty album….but I’ve tried listening to it a few times and I haven’t finished it yet….as I was saying it sounds very well produced….but most of the times I find out that:

      1) Somehow I get bored of Mustaine’s Vocal lines.

      2) It seems like he plays and soloes fast for the sake of it.

I don’t know man, I feel confused…nothing to say against Dave’s skills as a talented musician and yet….

I guess I’m gonna give it another try.

    • Trux says:

      pretty much sir.

  12. Love the album, but also like Death Magnetic so I guess I just suck.

  13. mrbinky says:

I think the instrumentation rules, it’s Dave’s voice that bugs me on certain tracks. Sounds like he’s pushing too hard to sound like he used too.

  14. Gospel of Madness says:

Just about every other band> Megadeth and Metallica Combined.

    Solved.

  15. groverXIII says:

I loved this album, but I liked Death Magnetic more.

  16. Anthony says:

I guess as a metal album Endgame is better, but i’d rather listen to Death Magnetic just because there’s more variety on the album and such. Sure the Day that Never comes I could do without, but Endgame will probably get the same result from me that United Abominations got: Listen to it a bunch the first week or so, and then not really give a shit and only listen to it when a song pops up in my WMP playlist. While Death Magnetic may not have got a bunch of play from me in the first week and such, I find myself really wanting to listen to Suicide & Redemption or Broken Beat and Scarred a lot when i’m sitting in front of the computer with nothing else to do.

  17. Vlad says:

worst minute in endgame > Metallica’s last 20 years

    Megadeth’s last 20 years > Metallica’s existence

    • Mike2 says:

ooooh come on, Metallica at their best is way fucking better than Megadeth at their best.

Master of Puppets is way better than Rust In Peace or So Far So Good.

And Load/Reload is way better than Risk, Risk sucked all over.

But I agree St. Anger sucks huge donkey balls

  18. hibernum says:

It sounds ok. I guess it is missing something that will probably never come back. I mean, I guess it isn’t as tired as the last couple of Megadeth albums, which sound like he would really rather be doing something else like ride on his horsies. Whatever. That Chris Broderick is a beast of a guitarist. A worthy replacement for Marty:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5zV-IlSvP4

OOoohh yeah! Wait, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, Dave Mustaine. Stinky Dave. He needs to grow up, I think. Why doesn’t he write about something he cares about that I might actually give a shit about, like his divorce. He’s gotta be more angry about that than some crime he read about in the newspapers. I would be.

  19. I really enjoy the album and it does kick the shit out of death magnetic!!!!

  20. SourDeez says:

Even the crappy Megadeth albums are better than anything Mehtallica have released since Justice.

  21. THRASHETTE says:

Dude. I just wrote an article about Endgame for the school paper LAST NIGHT, and they go and stream it the next fucking day. The editor better let me make some revisions. Now I can confirm its superiority to DM. :)

  22. JaHsatan says:

Endgame sounds like a technical mess. The album is like part 2 to United Abominations. UA was not a good album other than maybe 2 songs. I will say the same for Endgame. I will agree and always have that Dave Mustaine is one of the best guitarist out here however Megadeth just does not have the solid Metallica feel. None of Dave Mustaine’s guitar leads are memorable anymore, everything sounds like they are trying to hard.

Death Magnetic has some excellent Guitar Solo’s that are very sick and recognizable. The thing is Death Magnetic songs are very powerful and just stick in your head. Come on, That was Just your Life, Broken Beaten and Scarred, All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss, My Apocalypse, all of these songs are better and more catchy than anything Megadeth has done in 10 years or more. I think the biggest problem for Megadeth is after 18 different members they have not been able to find a solid sound. Bands that switch members to often never can find a groove i.e. megadeth, anthrax etc….

I love Megadeth however there is NO comparison to Death Magnetic.

    • thebasspro says:

how can you say that end game sounds like they are trying to hard, look at death magnetic (again) and look at the shit that they have put out b4, im not gona trash on the black album cuz im sure alot of you liked it but i personally didnt like most of the songs on it, then you got the other crap after and worst of all is anger then you get death magnetic that is metallica’s producer or what ever going… you guys fucked up last album try to make something that sounds like the old days, and they kinda sorta pushed it out of themselves, i got the vibe off that album like they are trying WAY to hard to do something they didint really want to do but did for the $$$, and maby end game is to but they did a hell of a better job doing it, plus they can at least still play their instruments, and with the addition of chris they have someone who is up there with the best of the best.

  23. JaHsatan says:

Don’t get me wrong, I still like Endgame very much it;s just not as good as DM…

    Satan

  24. joshkid says:

Axl, you sure know how to stir shit up, shit-stirrer.

  25. Jonathan says:

I hated Mustaine’s voice in Countdown. And I seriously couldn’t understand why people liked Megadeth at all, considering that was supposed to be their best album. His voice just sucked on that album, even if the guitars were fine. Unlike Hetfield, who still sounds fine for the most part. I still think Death Magnetic is pretty good, but Endgame is better than Countdown, and for the first few songs, better than Death Magnetic, but as with DM, it gets old soon. To be generous, I’ll give it a seven out of ten. DM got a six and a half in my book.

  26. Mark Gavin says:

I thought the only songs on Death Magnetic worth listening to were That Was Just Your Life, and the first half of Day That Never Comes, otherwise it was quite bland and full of terrible solos that make Kerry King sound like John Petrucci.

But hey, I’m the uber Megadeth/Dave Mustaine fan so I guess I can’t talk. Endgame kicks major ass!

  27. Rob Day says:

Headcrusher is better than the entire DM album.

  28. Apocalyptimaniac says:

fuck metallica. When Hetfield learned how to sing it ruined them.

oh, wait, the singing thing and the commercialism.

oh yeah, and Lars and the napster thing

    fuck metallica

  29. Matt says:

First track 2minute+ guitar solo = super cheese
Dave’s voice has always been really cheesy and annoying…..he talks waaayyy too much. I’m a fan of Megadeth but some of their songs really make me cringe and it’s always because Mustane is cheesing it up. let’s face it Metallica is never going to top(or sound like) their first four albums and Megadeth is never going to top(or sound like) Rust in Peace……World Painted Blood > Endgame

  30. MuthaFuckaI'mAHeadBusta says:

I can’t condone anything either of these bands have done in close to fifteen years.

  31. dot says:

never really cared for the last two good megadeth albums. they were ok, i guess, if you’re a fan, but they were vastly inferior to the old albums. (until countdown)

endgame, however, definitely sounds like a winner. like the old albums, it makes me forget just how grating mustaine’s voice can be when he’s “singing– which means the music is just plain awesome.

i’d never have thought megadeth could sound this good again.

  32. Tim says:

Metallica haven’t been good since Cliff died, and they’ve been terrible since they lost their balls circa 1992. They just don’t have it anymore. All their youthful aggression and drinking problems and such are out the window, and so they are unable to write metal. If they were really that talented, the music would continue to be good without the heaviness, but they aren’t. They have no taste anymore… just look at who they picked to be their new bass player. If they were smart they would have pre-empted Dave and grabbed James LoMenzo.

The only reason anyone likes Death Magnetic is that it has Metallica’s name on it.

  33. stink-pucker says:

So…Christian right? ummm his ‘dying wish is to kill his enemies’ or something?

Man…this Christianity thing is brutal! kill ‘em for God mr. mustaine…. that’ll show em…

    when you DIE youre DEAD.

    booyah!

  34. Bicro says:

This album has a song about NASCAR, so it fails.

  35. jeff says:

I just can’t listen to Mustaine’s “Hey! I’m molesting a cat vocals”. Instrumentally I think it is marginally better than DM.This Shrinebuilder rocks. Kind of Like Electric Wizard.

  36. metalchiva says:

Metallica its a band.. they are brothers.. (maybe in somewhere in time they had they strong argues) Megadeth its just a lonely man sourrended by flawless musicians.. (i really respeact Chris Broderick, i think he’s one of the best guitar players out there).. LONG LIVE Metallica.. buuuut.. i have to say Endgame it’s an awesome album.. but it could be better without Mustaines anoying vocals.. CHEERS..

    • mrbinky says:

You nailed it dude. Metallica is a band, Megadeth is a person. They can’t really be compared as is.

And yes, Endgame is awesome. When Dave said it was his best work since RIP, he wasn’t lying.

  37. dick? says:

death magnetic isn’t even good enough for me to wipe my ass on…if it were tp that is.

Endgame > DM > possibly WPB

but still, this coming from a Megadeth fan.
and of the big four, in order, for me it’s Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax.

  38. LittleNicky says:

This album kicks all sorts of ass. My only complaint is that every time I listen to it, or every time it gets brought up, I lose the game…

  39. jj says:

no thanks i don’t listen to gay

  40. Frampler says:

It has some really good parts, but overall is a mess. Mustaine’s voice is embarassingly bad, and completely out of place with the instrumentalism.

    • CJ says:

Yeah, I really can’t help but think that it would make a good instrumental album if they cut out the vocal tracks. They seriously are terrible. Great guitar work though.

  41. bmshredder says:

Metallica is a better band, period. As individuals, it’s more even. Example, Friedman and broderick walk circles around hammett. Hetfield is the riffmaster while mustaine sucks his cock. Overall though, metallica is better. Megadeth is great and i love their music, but you cant compare say….Justice to symphony? suck it

    • Hendecahedron says:

Please stop saying “symphony this, symphony that” the album’s name is Countdown to Extinction. Symphony of Destruction is a song within that album.

  42. Jon says:

    This album sounds awesome!

  43. Kuranes says:

Megadeth and Slayer have been putting out the same albums for years. The difference is I like the album that Megadeth keeps putting out. Metallica puts out different albums and even though I don’t care for some of them I respect that they try new stuff.

  44. Chimp-0-Neg says:

the opener starts off like NOFX

  45. rattlehead says:

This is not the best album since Symphony- It’s the best album since the mighty Rust in Peace. BTW axl stop bringing Metallica into every Megadeth post. Move on. No wonder we are always hearing about Dave whining or talking shit bout Metallica- no one lets him forget. His albums stand on their own without being propped up by the Metallica brand- unlike Metallica’s own albums.

  46. Bitches says:

You are all a bunch of whiny bitches. In my world, there are only two types of songs- those that are good, and those that aren’t.

All this comparing and > < + – = … What the fuck is that?

  47. Gossamer Axe says:

Hetfield sounds like a shit kicker singer now. Dave has always sounded like someone tweaked his balls before he stepped up to the mic.

DM was ok, not as good as KEA – MOP but better than the last 3.
Haven’t heard the new Megadeth yet.

Thanks MS for promoting Arsis tho! Love them!

  48. Jannell B. says:

Symphony is not an album you stupid turds! Its Countdown to Extinction! Go buy the album instead of downloading or Itunesing or whatever the fuck you losers to nowadays. xoxox Jannell

  49. Sammy says:

How many times over the years have bands said, “Oh our next album we’re returning to the heavy”? Or “going back to our roots”?

How many times have they been full of shit?

Well, this time, it finally happened. I’m not sure if Mustaine made any such promise this time, but if he did, he lived up to it. I liked UA, but this blows that away.

  50. Hendecahedron says:

I think the hate towards Death Magnetic stems from the fact that no matter what Metallica does, they will never shake off the damage they did to their reputation (and to the fans) with the sub par work offered on Load/Reload. Their credibility has been smashed to bits, never, ever to be recovered.

  51. Mitchell says:

This album is great. The opening instrumental leading into the second track is killer

  52. julian says:

This record just isn’t as good as everyone is making it out to be. If you’re a complete mindless Megadeth fan, you’ll love it. If you’re not, then you’ll be left wanting with this one. There are cool moments, but on the whole its not that good.

  53. metalliman says:

    Death Magnetic > Endgame.

  54. blablabla says:

Dialectic chaos: sounds good.. but nothing unique
This day we fight: Horrible song
44 minutes: Hmm.. I like this!
    1320: also a good one
    bite the hand: yawn
    bodies: meh..
endgame: I only liked the initial part of the verse.. the rest is sloppy
hardest part of letting go: OOH… I love this one!
head crusher: why so many people like it? Sloppy too.
how the story ends: I might like it if it’s the youthanasia days… recycled stuffff
the right to go insane: good song too.

    My overall:
Typical megadave progressions filled with empty-minded shredding. Why so many positive reviews? Oh… I get it.. Only ‘pure’ thrashers can appreciate it?
UA is better. DM? imo, better too. Get over it.

  55. Nate says:

This album is god-awful and anyone who thinks it’s anything above mediocre is an idiot who knows nothing about metal.

    Vocals – Terrible
    Lyrics – Worse
Guitarwork – No soul, just fast playing
Riffs – Weak as hell, nothing good.

Everything else is unremarkable. Death Magnetic is a hundred times better

  56. Hellobitch says:

I think they were at the same level.
They both mixed old and new.
In my opinion I give them both four and 1/2 horns
minus 1/2 horn for Cyanide and Hardest part of letting go
    I don’t like those songs =P
