"heavy downtuned 7-string guitars"???

Are we talking about the same band? Bellamy has never played a 7-string to my knowledge.

7-string guitars are lame anyway. If you have to artificially tune down to sound heavy, you're a poseur. Same for 5-string basses. Cliff Burton & Lemmy never played no 5-string!

I'm a Muse fan and I was really exited to hear this album but, after a couple of spins, I'm just not that into it. I wish they would've continued in their guitar driven rock direction. Oh well ... not an awful album but just not my cup of tea.

Did anyone catch them on the VMA's last night? Muse is the only reason I watched. I would have picked a better U.S. television debut for them. Even this band sounds plastic and canned, once MTV gets ahold of them.

That is an awesome solo and it certainly makes the song as a whole a lot better as the entire track seems to be written as a progression to the big pay-off. Without it, the song would be a little limp.

Sorry, couldn't reply to your comment directly.

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever looked at HAARP in that light before. And yes, you're right. That is certainly the sort of sound I'd like to hear revived on their studio material. I bought the album during my lunch break so let's see if they can deliver!

I haven't actually gotten a chance to listen to the new album, but I would also prefer a less electronic and more hard rock sound. Bellamy is too good of a guitarist not to have his instrument be a driving force in the band. So basically by stadium sound, you mean more of a polished and clean sound with less grit than before? Because even on HAARP they sound pretty raw, so I don't think I'd like the new record to be much of a departure from that. I think HAARP is one of the best concerts ever recorded.

I wouldn't say majority but he is better than some. If he put his mind to it, he could be a stunning metal guitarist. Assassin is a great example of what he can do on the heavy front. We can always dream...

Oh there's no denying that but the stadium influence is taking over their raw/hard rock soundwhich I've always preffered. Each to their own.

Muse would sound a thousand times better in a stadium or festival than at a club or smaller venue.

Bellamy is easily my favourite guitarist. Hands down. He might not be able to shred like some other guitarists and he certainly can't write the most amazing metal songs (but that's not really the point), but what I love about him is his versatility. He can play any genre of guitar-based music and he can do it well.

Origin of Symmetry all the way. It's just a ballsy, straight-forward rock record with some crazy shit going on in the background like the sprinkling of falsetto vocals and the twinkly, piano bits that just makes the gut-busting riffs even more epic. The band will never be this urgent ever again as they seem convinced that sounding more like a stadium band is the way forward.

"because really, what the fuck even is metal anyway??"

For starters, I know that what the general population deem as "metal" is purely subjective.
I also realize that having an open mind about what is and isn't metal has led to a lot of garbage being considered by most people (on this site included) as metal.
In my oh so humble opinion, there has to be some ground rules.
Core bands are not metal, period.
They may have metal elements, but they stray too far out of the realm of decent music due to blatant ripping off of other bands that did it better years prior.
Anyone with half a brain and considers themselves to be a metalhead, should be checking out the bands that started this shit.
You may not like them, but you need to listen to them, you need to be aware and respect what they did.
part of the fun of being into metal is going back to the beginning and listening to the bands that paved the way, you can see how it has progressed in a positive way, and see how it's spiraled into shitsville (core).
You guys should change the name of your site to " Musicsucks" that way you can seem a little more legitimate when promoting blatantly non-metal bands like Muse, regardless of the bands metal wonderings.
