DESPISED ICON’S “DAY OF MOURNING” VIDEO: THE DEATHCORE EVOLUTION CONTINUES

Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 12:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

As evidenced by their new video, “Day of Mourning,” Despised Icon are the latest deathcore band to start making the move towards more traditionalist death metal (although co-vocalists Steve Marois and Alexandre Erian have retained their distinctly wigger sense of style). I’ve already heard some butt-hurt reactions from fans; like All Shall Perish’s The Price of Existence, DI’s last release, The Ills of Modern Man, was a kick-ass record that actually gave deathcore a good name (read Erik Thomas’ excellent write-up for Metal Review here), so some disappointed cries were bound to happen, I guess. Plus, nine times out of ten metal fans get pissy about the slightest change to a band’s sound anyways, so really any bitching and moaning is not shocking.

Everyone will get to decide what they think of DI’s musical evolution when Day of Mourning is released September 22 on Century. In the meantime, here’s the aforementioned video for the title track.

the songs decent the singers need to stop wiggin it tho and when the bass player flipped his guitar around he looked so amazed he pulled it off it was hilarious

  2. fantasyh says:

The music is actually pretty enjoyable, but the wigger singers just throw me off a bit too much

  3. ceth carter says:

Love this band but i gotta say that straight billed ball caps should be slaaped right off of the heads of anyone who wears them. What an asshole looking fashion fad.

  4. John says:

I’m really glad they remembered how to play fast. That last album was fucking terrible.

  5. Lee says:

Terrible. I’ll stick with The Red Chord over these gangsta-frogs.

  6. Enjoy Guinness Extra Stout says:

Metal music has always been about nonconformity right. At some point it was established metalheads had to look like dirty, greasy, longhaired, scumbag biker types in a concert t-shirt, right? That became a uniform for all metalheads. So in keeping with the nonconformity a paradigm shift occured and metal went the other way with its style. Now its flat billed New Era hats and baggy jeans and shit. Research the history apply your findings to the present and what you’ll get in the future is probably going to be even more ridiculous. Dockers and Abercrombie Fitch and pressed slacks with a turtle neck and blazer ensemble.

  7. metalguy says:

its good, but Ills was the best deathcore album of all time. yea the wigger moves really dont fit the new style

  8. major says:

    not bad… not bad

  9. orbital says:

love the music, hate the douchebaggery

  10. TurdFerguson says:

    Great song, horrible video.

  11. bloodjunkie says:

That was dissapointingly lame. The Ills of Modern man was a tremendous record regardless how other people may view it. I’m not much of a deathcore fan; DI and Whitechapel are the ONLY 2 bands in the genre I can pass off as listenable. The music was sub-par, video was lame. So overall: lame.

  12. Io says:

Only two breakdowns in the entire song? Tsk tsk, DI is going downhill..

I don’t understand how people with otherwise decent taste can like this band. This song is tolerable, I guess, but it goes nowhere. I didn’t feel the need to jam pencils in my ears, just to go back to listening to my music.

  13. I dont understand the point of having 2 vocalists…unless they’re each doing their own dynamic thing (like new Scar Symmetry) but other than that, they could make that same shit grunting sound with one vocalist….and quit trying to make metal with a wigg image….just doesnt seem to work. Maybe because the singers are both little guys? So they appear tougher??? lol hhmmm…

    • CJ says:

That’s what I was thinking. 2 vocalists is kinda cool sometimes, but really only when you can tell the difference between them. Oh, and for the record, this band sucks.

    • Reaper-X says:

But two vocalists adds a dynamic onstage that couldn’t be done with one vocalist who did overdubs in the booth.

The wigg image does have to stop though. Fuck that shit.

  14. SolaceInNothing says:

Ha, anyone who thinks metal heads aren’t concerned about fasion need to read these posts. Who cares what the singers wear or how many there are?

Do you like the song? If yes then just close your eyes. Fact is not everyone is into having long hair and wearing combat boots. Everyone has their own influences, but it is how they bring it to the table musically that counts.

Hears a hint. Attempting to look “evil” can be just as douchey then looking like a wigger.

  15. Art Weingartner says:

That video was fucking terrible… especially compared to the Perdition which is insane, one of my fav’s.

  16. Zombie(really) says:

Clothes don’t make you metal, and I’m not gonna be the one to judge someone based solely on ones clothes.
But the whole “wigger” thing is really really lame…The video and song follow suit.

  17. MetalMatt says:

music and vocals = good. (pretty good really)
    video = boring
    wigger styles = (shakes head)

This is why I don’t like videos. You get to see how idiotic some people look. I hate straight billed caps! If I had the sound off, I’d like it was a rap video with guitars.

  18. jtquake says:

song is only “pretty good,” not great.

i feel the same way about “MVP.”

video blows, on the other hand.

FURTIVE MONOLOGUE has such a sweet video– what happened to that director?

  19. Lord Bling says:

Not even close to the video for ‘In the Arms of Perdition’. Great song too. Too bad the rest of the album wasn’t as good.

Shame about their sense of fashion. If anything, it’s only inspiring more bands like Waking the Cadaver.

  20. WolfAmongSheep says:

Holy Fuck, Despised Icon Is The Shit Musically, But That Video Made Me Sick To My Fuckin Stomach, Jesus!!!

  21. My Penis Itches Bad says:

Not to bad of a song, I like Despised Icon loved Ills Of Modern Man, hate the whole collared shirt and hat and wierd motions with their hands when they sing. Other then all that this is decent deathcore i hate deathcore but DI make it really enjoyable!

  22. taog36 says:

This band fucking sucks. Why is there 2 singers when they both sound exactly the fucking same, not to mention the boring ass breakdowns. And this it metal not rap, wtf?

    • haha says:

laugh out loud. if you knew anything about music like this
you would know there are two totally different vocalists.
-_- stick to your own music. if you dont like it listen to something else
stop thinking your cool because you have the freedom to complain on the internet

  23. mike says:

One of the few very good deathcore bands. Music = good and that’s all that matters.

  24. SolaceInNothing says:

Watching this video for a second time, I love it more because I begin to understand something that I think allot of other people are missing . . .

Take into consideration that even though they are known as a “dethcore” band and have been called wiggers before they have stated that they do not want to be associated with acts such as Emmure.

Now think about the video. They are at a funeral, doing wigger things such as pouring out a shot and having bitches at their side . . .

Anyone else feel theres some majorly subtle satire going on here?

  25. The Goat says:

Uh… I really don’t see the difference between this band, Atreyu, or Killshit Engage. Guess I’m a really old guy who likes REAL death metal. Yeah, I remember those days…

    • SolaceInNothing says:

Atreyu, KSE, and these guys . . . really? Your not just old, im afraid your going senile. My condolences.

Ah yes “REAL” death metal. Decades of tradition unaffected by progress . . .

  26. xZakkxSlaughterx says:

You guys who say that Despised Icon is crap have a lot to learn. They have some of the best musicians in metal today (especially their drummer). He has the speed, cleaness and technicality of someone who’s been doing it for over 20 years. Yea their whole style may be silly, but that doesn’t matter at all. Metal is about the music not about the look or how black and evil their outfit is. Just listen to the music an enjoy it. Despised Icon is the shit!!!

  27. Corpse Pus says:

Despised Icon are really, really good. Ills Of Modern Man is such a great record because besides the breakdowns and pig squeals (if you’re not into that sort of thing), they have killer riffs. Take the main riffs of Furtive Monologue and Sheltered Reminiscence, 1:24 into In the Arms of Perdition, 1:17 into Quarantine – just pummeling metal hooks.

The other thing about them is that they have some dynamic range and hint at epic greatness – take 2:29 into Immaculate off of The Healing Process or the end of Fainted Blue Ornaments. I’ve always thought if they would develop that side of their songwriting and write some more involved compositions they could create an all time classic metal album.

That said, the Day Of Mourning is kind of disappointing. It’s fine, but standard fare from these guys. The other new track, MVP, has that cool orchestral hint about two minutes in, but once again they just pass over it, and don’t go deep. I’m looking forward to the rest of the album though and hope they just go for it.

The video is kind of ‘meh’. I like the ‘Making Of’ webisode about it better.

  28. NORDINI says:

pour some out for one’s homies, fucking whiggas!!

  29. 20 eyes says:

they are probably laughing about being wiggers themselves… so if you are bitching… then you are part of the plan.

but i too thought they were going to start rapping for a second.

  30. Anselmowitz says:

Yeah ah no. More death sure but still not metal. Tony from Blood Duster is the only trve metal wigger.

  31. F says:

One of the worst videos I’ve seen, no doubt. Their singers look fuckin’ ridiculous. Other than that, the song was kind of good, but that breakdown destroyed it all. MVP is way better, imo.

  32. ^.^ says:

They’ve been going downhill since The Healing Process. The new album will make DI one of those overly technical, but boring deathcore bands.

  33. BillyLamotta says:

For being Metal fans, you sure are very caught up on image, what a bunch of fuckin homos. For real, this isn’t lady gaga or nSYNC, stop judging people by their clothes and open your fuckin ears.
    fuckin girls.
