DOWN COVER VAN HALEN, PROVE THAT REDNECKS LOVE COCK ROCK AND STONER METAL IN EQUAL MEASURES

This just in: rednecks do not actually have red necks. I guess “mudnecks” or “farmer’s tans” isn’t as catchy.

So. Familial obligations kept me away from the Down/Melvins show here in NYC this past Friday night, and apparently I missed quite a party. Which isn’t shocking – I’ve never seen Down play a bad show, and actually having a support act (as opposed to the hour of Kiss and Skynyrd videos they played before going on the last time I saw them), let alone one as awesome as Melvins, probably just made the entire affair that much more rockin’. Plus, members of Skid Row and God Forbid were on hand. FML.

Amongst the apparent highlights: Down covering Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love.” I kinda wish that Phil Anselmo had tried to do a DLR mid-air split or that Kirk Windstein had slid across the stage on his knees or something, but whatevs.

    down played “ain’t talkin’ bout love” at sonar in baltimore on the 8th. they also covered priest’s “grinder,” with the little lyric change “grinder– looking for weed” with phil doing the little weed-grinder motion with his hand. definitely a kickass show.

    I was there! It was hysterical, because Anselmo was desperately trying to get the band to stop playing the song in order to have enough time for “Stone The Crow” and “Bury Me In Smoke”/

    Hell yeah, my favorite VH song. Well, one of them anyway. I’m so pissed that I missed this show. I don’t care what anyone says, especially you Pantera/Phil haters. Down kicks ass. I actually prefer them to Pantera, Phil’s vocals are way more tolerable in a stoner rock setting.

    Saw them last night in Boston. Both them and the Melvins kicked a huge heap of ass (and speaking of the Melvins, I didn’t know they deploy two drummers now… and they were fuckin’ TIGHT).
