  1. metalguy says:

if its so highly anticipated, why has the general opinion on it been the vocals suck and the song writing is lazy?

    • Sammy says:

“General opinion”? You forgot to link to your sources…………I’ll await your answer.

      • Sammy says:

I’ll answer my question. I did a Google search for “Shadows Fall Retribution review” and read the first six reviews, in order. The sixth review was the first negative one and it was more of the “meh” variety. Three were 3.5/5, one was 4/5 and one was 5/6. That’s an average of 3.73/5. The semi-negative review didn’t have a numerical score.

So it would appear that the “general opinion”, at least from a quick cursory view, is quite positive. I believe I even read the phrases, “finest work to date” and “now, THAT’S more like it”.

I have had this album for 3 weeks now. I will say it is not a bad album. I am not a huge Shadows Fall fan anyways but the vocals are horrendous. For some reason I just cant stand Brian Fair’s voice. I give it a 7 out of 10.

  2. Blake says:

I like it so far. Definitely a lot more engaging than previous stuff of their I’ve heard.

  3. mike says:

    Big return to form.

  4. nickweiser says:

i dig it a lot. My fav since The Art Of Balance

    • I says:

I agree. That was the album that got me into them. And each album since then has been exponetially(sp?) worse. But what I’m hearing right now, this is good. I’m talking old SF good. I’m definatly going to have to pick this one up.

  5. MetalMatt says:

    sounds like Trivium in places.
I liked it. I gave it a quasi-review. check it.

  6. Ive only listened to a few of them thus far, but Im liking it a lot…especially when it comes down to the soloing…

  7. Tyler says:

I thought I’d hate this, but damn, this might be a 5/5. Fantastic album, not a single weak track.

  8. Mario says:

Return to Art of Balance quality work. I’m BEYOND impressed!!

  9. Myopinionisbetterthenyours says:

    So far so good.

  10. loganarchy says:

Hmmm….haven’t listened yet, but if most of you like it, I wonder where this guy is coming from: http://www.metalunderground.com/reviews/details.cfm?releaseid=2129

  11. BruisedMetal says:

Everything Iv heard from Retribution sounds awesome, they did some different things on this album and it payed off… Im waitin to get it in the mail \m/

  12. The Overmatt says:

Songwriting’s a hell of a lot better than it’s been in a while. Good stuff.

  13. Great playing but the music doesn’t captivate me at all.

    • timmah says:

I agree, stellar performance by all of them.

For me though, I think this is the first time that their music actually does captivate me. I really like this album so far

  14. Adam Young says:

I feel bad for people who are into this band. they are a pathetic excuse for a metal band. Their gimmick is their singer’s disgusting hair. They don’t even look like a bad ass metal band, instead of bunch of mechanics who play music on the weekends in their garages. Shadows Fall makes me sick.

    • msv81 says:

I have to agree about having a distaste for this band, but what the hell does not “looking like a bad ass metal band” even mean? Not enough corpse paint or clown masks for you? Basing your opinion on a band based on their look is retarded.

      • Adam Young says:

they just look lame. everything about them annoys me. they can’t break up fast enough.

        • Fong Chung says:

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “Mechanic Metal” is so true about these Affliction shirt wearing tools. They need to realize, that they have alot in common with Dokken, and not Death or Athiest.

    • SonOF says:

What does your definition of a “cool” metal band look like….KISS? They are normal looking white guys wearing T-Shirts and jeans (other than Fair, who had dreads – which according to you is their “gimmick”).

Your reasons for hating are some of the dumbest and worst I have ever heard. And claiming some dude’s hair in a metal band is “disgisting” (and annoys you) is perhaps the fruitiest thing I have seen said on this board. Are you like, TOTALLLY grossed out by their unkempt fingernails too?

  15. Is there every any positive album reviews anymore? Do people even like music anymore? If you listen to this board you would think we all hate music and each other.

  16. Discipleofthewatch says:

I am really looking forward to this album and Megadeth’s Endgame. Hey, I love Shadows Fall!

  17. Metal Fuckin' Dave says:

Oh fuck. Oh fuck yeah! I’m picking this up right now.

  18. Che Guitarra says:

I think this is probably the best they’ve ever done. I picked it up 3 hours ago, and I’m starting on my fourth spin of it now. I’m fucking digging this.

  19. Jizzmaster3000 says:

So forgettable, it sounds to me like something that WWE would push.

  20. Discipleofthewatch says:

Hmm, Bark at the Moon as a bonus cover track!

  21. SonOF says:

I like SF a lot, and this new record sounds like some of the best stuff they have done, but MAN they get involved with some shitty tours (more often than not it seems).

The tour they are currently on is: Shadows Fall, Five Finger Death Punch, OTEP, and 2 Cents (The “Shock and Raw Tour”?)….GODDAMN that’s an atrocious lineup.

I’d blame their label Ferret, but OTEP and FFDP aren’t on it. Oh well. Get drunk, go late, and support Shadows Fall (they are headlining…I HOPE?!)

  22. aaron m. says:

hey wow. it’s not toasted shit. i’m not totally into this the way i was into “the art of balance”, but it’s not all that bad compared to the last two full-lengths they put out.
