THE ONLY DIO SONG THAT MY MOM WOULD LIKE

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 12:15pm by

The dudes at Metal Insider (via tipster/friend of MetalSucks Stabitha C) have come across what might the find of the year: this video of featuring the single “An Angel is Missing” by Ronnie and the Red Caps… “Ronnie” in this case being Ronnie James Dio (or just “Ronnie Dio,” as he’s called here), who not only sings, but plays the bass and trumpet as well. The single was recording in 1959, a good ten years before the formation of Elf (which also featured Ronnie and the Red Caps guitarist Nick Pantas!) and a decade and a half prior to the first Rainbow album.

I don’t think it’s any secret that Dio had a non-metal musical career earlier in his life, but I’ve never actually heard any of the music he made during that period before. Plus, check out that photo of the young Mr. Dio! WEIRD!!!

I made it as far as, “An angel is missing, In heaven tonight, and when they start counting…” And then my roommates’ fits of laughter made me stop.

  • You Don’t Know Me

I just met Dio at the Heaven & Hell concert in Atlantic City a few weeks ago. Super nice guy. Probably one of the nicest guys in metal.

hahahahahha that might be funnier than the LP parody!! oh man!! Dio, please don’t “return to your roots” for the love of Satan!!

Thanks for the shoutout! I’m internet famous!

Without looking at the camption, guess which one’s Mr. Dio? Looookooout!!!!

  • cougar party

Damn, this really puts Dio’s age in perspective. The guys ancient and still kick ass. I doubt we’ll hear any metal musicians make an album as good as H&H at that age.

Thats awesome, my god that is great.

Your mom doesn’t like Dio ? That sucks !!

Yea, I had download a boatload of Ronnie Dio and the Prophets for a segment on my radio show called “Dio’s Dirty Secrets” and was listening to them while I was at my parents house. My mom loves it! Nothing beats Dio singing “Love Potion Number 9.” I have a vinyl bootleg of the “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” single; b side is “Love Pains.”

I have to have that LP!

  • Kuranes

So Dio has been very active in the music business for 52 years, and he’s not in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. What a huge oversight.

  • Sammy

Pre-dating metal and then transmogrifying into metal is metal.

    • Glenn

      This.

    Holy fucking awesome.

track’s pretty good, actually. i like it.

but everyone has to wonder: does dio have this in his personal archive? someone ask this in an interview.

  • dot

at first i thought the dude in the middle (who looks like he’s being carried by the taller dude) was dio. XD

  • Rick James

Good Music, gOtta check out the internetz for some bootlegs….

  • Facebook User

This is just more proof that Mr. Ronnie James Dio is an immortal.

  • myke

yah hand to dio the guy has a great voice and i actually enjoyed that. nice work dudes!!!

“might be the find of the year” is an understatement.

This guy is a true Legend. It’s too bad he hasn’t been inducted into the Rock Hall yet, but it just shows how stupid that place is when Lars is in there and he isn’t.

Just found a whole archive of his earlier stuff – quite interesting to hear the hard rock sound develop as you go on and there’s a few covers of Led Zeppelin and others. Plus perhaps most interestingly for people here, a live version of War Pigs from six years before he joined Sabbath…

My GOD is this old…I mean the You Tube video…naturally the song is old as all fuck. I remember looking these up last year on a tip. I’d known about Dio’s “teen idol” days for some time and was curious if any of it had ended up online. You gotta admit…its catchy as hell! He’s the fucking Wayne Newton of heavy metal.

  • Gossamer Axe

Hasn’t any of you heard Elf? Your Mom’s would have liked that…Bluesy 70s rock.

Hell, when I was a teen (the 80s) My Mom went to see Dio with me at the Sports Arena in San Diego, which was taped for the Intermission album he released. Great show!

I’ve got dozens of songs by Ronnie & the Redcaps, Ronnie & the Prophets, The Electric Elves and The Elves. It’s (almost) all great stuff and readily available via torrents. I think what’s very interesting is a very early version of him garage-banding “War Pigs” with The Elves which is actually way better than his performance on Live Evil.
