Axl - great interview! I can feel the fanboy coming out of you and deal with it very well. Vernon comes off as easy going intelligent and has a great personality to boot. I saw them in both Philadelphia and Teaneck. The Mexicali show was about 2 1.2 hours long both were phenomenal shows and I can't wait to see them in October in New York

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but I had to dig for the book and wouldn't you just know it was in the last moving box I would have thought to look in? FML.

Anyway, *The Portable Henry Rollins* is something of a compendium of Henry's published works. If you've never read any of Henry's stuff, this is fair warning: It's pretty brutal. Of particular note, in regards to Vernon's comment, is the section with the abstract from *Now Watch Him Die,* which documents with excruciating and heartbreaking detail the brutal murder of his good friend Joe Cole and Henry's attempt to deal with the aftermath. I can't say for certain and I wouldn't presume to speak for Henry, anyway, but his writings could go a long way towards explaining his often instense demeanor. He was, of course, unfailingly polite (if not jovial) on the occasion I was fortunate enough to have meet and conversed with him.

At any rate, I get my New Music Tuesdays on Thursdays (pay day, woot) and Living Colour will be among the spoils of the day. This evening doors will be locked, phone turned off, and computer powered down for "Me Time."

Once again Shinaain, you have managed to reply in an intelligent, thought-provoking manner. It's interesting to hear that about Rollins. What book did you read that in?

Awesome interview. I most especially dig the part where he talks about roleplaying and the needs of many people to fit whatever part they're playing in life. Truth from his point of view without casting judgment - MS maniacs, take note.

A side note and Vernon could be forgiven for not tracking on this, but anyone who's read any of Rollins' published works describing the headspace he was in at that time knows better than to question the "Black Flag face." If his published works are to be believed (and I, for one, believe they are), this man was dialed into pain for more than a decade. It may seem impossible or even unlikely, but to read his printed perspective he couldn't have cared less how "well" "Liar" or anything else was doing back then. In one passage in particular, he talked about how weird it was to do meet-and-greets at the time because people would be telling him how much they loved what he was doing. Most people wouldn't think that could be a bad thing, but he said it was just about the most surreal experience possible to have to hear people compliment him on how f*cked up he was, and then for him to have to think of ways to be gracious and appreciative of THEIR appreciation of how f*cked up he was. I won't place a value judgment on his perspective or venture to cast an opinion, as situations such as those are completely outside my realm of experience.

ANYWAY, off of Rollins and back to Vernon: I appreciate the time and patient consideration Vernon gave to all questions posed to him here. For my part, being a fan of the music but largely not familiar with the band members themselves, their history, or personalities, this insight into the Living Colour creative process has been warmly received and has done its part to make me even more excited about owning the new album. (I don't listen to streams most of the time. When I listen to new music, I normally like to read the liners notes while I listen to the album I just BOUGHT, which requires me to wait at least until release day.) Oh, and hooray for fanboys!

Cheers.

He sounds like an extremely happy guy. He's probably having the time of his life right now. Great interview, Axl.

If Vernon reads this, I want to ask him if he was ever given a/tried out a guitar that had a curved neck. It was curved so that when you got to the thinner frets it supposedly gave better access and playability. I know it was a black guitar player that was handed the guitar in this video that I can't even place. The guy who tried the guitar said it was amazing. I'm not sure if I am describing it correctly.... It curved the way that your hand would wrap around the neck if you gripped it.

I haven't been able to find any information about this guitar. Any help?

Wow, good for you Axl! You may have gushed a bit and done a little colon excavating, but who wouldn't if they got the chance to interview a personal hero? Vernon comes off as super cool, and it's awesome that he not only knew about your Metalsucks post, but read the comments. And he gave you a huge interview, which is beyond gracious.

One thing, though. I don't care how great Parker Fly guitars are, I think they're the most hideous looking guitars made.

And, not buying into the "metal face" is a thousand times more metal than a thousand scowls with horns in the air.
