POISON THE FUCKING BASTARDS WHO STEAL BAND VANS

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 11:30am by

vw bus limoThis always just breaks my heart. I’ve only got 4 guitars, most of which I barely play, but if any single one of them were stolen I’d be crushed. Imagine having all of your stuff EVER including guitars you’ve had forever, thousands of dollars worth of amplification and other gear AND your clothes and fucking everything you own stolen. THAT’s what just happened to Poison the Well. I can’t even imagine. Yet the guys have the goodwill and positive outlook to soldier on and say, “Pissed about our gear and passionate about this band as ever.” From their MySpace blog:

So this morning we woke up at our delightful Marriot Courtyard hotel (priceline, get into it) and walked outside to get in the van to head to Chicago for our second show of the tour. Only problem, it isn’t there.

Either someone is pulling some Merlin shit on us and just waiting for the perfect moment to unveil it and calm our shot nerves, or a talented scumbag stole our van and trailer with literally everything we own inside. Needless to say, we’re crushed. Our most beloved instruments are gone, and trust me, we’re gear nerds. After a great deal of scrambling and deliberation, we found a way to stay on tour, after a few days off to get some gear and a rental van together. Having something like this happen is the worst thing that can happen to any band short of someone dying, and we’re incredibly stoked to finish this tour with Billy Talent and play every night doing what we love. Our most sincere thanks to everyone who offered to help us in any way, our friends mean the world to us and everyone who has reached out today is absolutely mind blowing. Huge huge ups to Adam, Dave, and Jackie at Yeah!, the entire Ferret Records Family (Carl cause hes got the cash and Rick cause he calls the shots), Issac and the entire Indie Merch and Jakprints family, Tour Dog Leasing and Rental (thanks for driving to detroit to come get us), Jimmy and First Act Guitars, Russel Blair and Orange Amps, Derek at Ernie Ball, Tyme Rogers and Tech 21, Evan Obrien and Korg, Scott Uchida and Jim Dunlop, Jon “Shabba on the spot” Linton, John “Badge” Chidley. Some of these people have always helped us out and are further making our lives better. Some of these people barely know us and have helped us this with this shit time. If you want to help out, we’ll have a limited edition shirt online sometime soon that makes fun of our situation and is awesome, and all proceeds from that will go to wiping away our tears and some new tumbleweeds for the insides of our wallets. See you in a couple days. Pissed about our gear and passionate about this band as ever. Love, PTW

I like the idea of a limited edition t-shirt as opposed to a simple PayPal donation. I’ve definitely donated cash to bands that have been victims of crime before, and not that I really need another t-shirt — but somehow it feels less sketchy this way. As soon as we know more about when and where you can get this shirt / donate, you will.

*The above is, quite obviously, not Poison the Well’s van.

  • Slaughterhouse

That has to be the most horrible thing that could happen to any band! I feel for them!

    • jim

even worse than a bus crash or a plane crash ? dude get a perspective

  • Driven9

Hahh!!! of course this shit happened in Detroit (I am assuming cause they said “thanks for driving to Detroit to come get us”). I live there so Im aloud to hate – all others fuck off.

    • Phro

No, you’re right, Detroit sucks. And I don’t live anywhere near that god awful place.

  • joshkid

Holy shit! This is the ultimate suck

  • orbital

thats why one guy always sleeps in the van.

  • http://www.myspace.com/riffcompelsme riffcompelsme

I just hope the theft wasn’t the result of someone’s drunken blunder of leaving the keys in the ignition. Imagine having to live with that weight for the rest of the tour.

  • The Roan

stuff like this is enough to break up a band. sad to hear.

  • Shinaain

I hate thieves, much the same as I hate bullies and cowards. It’s hard for me to say I hate anything or anyone, but there it is. I’d give you the shirt off of my back if you told me you needed it, but don’t take it from me. Something like this could ruin a band, or even an individual. I wonder how the people who cheat and steal can justify their actions to themselves. Really, it boggles the mind.

Props to PTW for soldiering on and for not letting such a potentially devastating event curtail their efforts to push their music forward, and to everyone who has stepped up to pitch in and help to that end. And please DO let us know more information as you have it as to how we can do our part to help. Our community isn’t huge and we’re not mainstream, but I like to think we’re willing and able to take care of our own.

  • PTW Sucks

Poison The Well suck…so, this is actually a good thing. *phew*
This could have actually happened to a good band.

    • Nick

      Aaaaaaaaand you’re a tool.

    • Double D

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I disagree, but that is fucking hilarious!

  • Dave

A shame this happened. No matter who it happens to it really is a shame. Good luck to PTW and I hope they get their shit back.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

I personally dont care for this band, but as a guitarist and a gear FANATIC, i absolutely feel for these guys. This type of shit doesnt deserve to happen to anyone much less a Band trying to make it on the road and live out of their van. I hope they catch the fucks that did this, or you get your gear back (or both). Keep an eye out on ebay, maybe the guys that did it are retards and will try to sell it.

    • Shinaain

You know, that’s not a bad idea. The band could post to their official website or something an inventory of the gear that was stolen from them, distinguishing characteristics (special mods or particular road rash), and pictures (where available). It’s a long-shot, but maybe someone paying attention might see someone trying to unload this stuff on the Internet. Surely the thieves know they’ll get more money for that stuff selling it on eBay than they would pawning it or selling it second-hand to independent dealers. (And they WOULD get more money that way, wouldn’t they?) This is, of course, assuming their intent in stealing it was to hock it all. They could be nesting and cross-breeding mutant alien babies in that stuff in a cave 2 miles underground, as we speak. Bastards.

      • stu1

People ALWAYS post gear lists to news sites and myspace pages etc when gear is stolen.

        • Shinaain

Goes to show just how much I pay attention. In that case, I wonder how well that works for them…?

    • cougar party

I agree. This is the shit that you have nightmares about. I hope those fuckers that stole the van get whats coming to them.

  • http://fantasyh.wordpress.com fantasyh

    ONLY 4 guitars?
Anyway that really blows, but props for keeping on tour.

Poison The Well, I’mma let you finish, but IGGY AND THE STOOGES HAD THE BEST GEAR THEFT OF ALL TIME!!!

    • cougar party

  • http://www.solidsterecords.com NoCowNoFood

This same shit happened to Engine Down years a go and they broke up that was like the last call.. hope this does not happens to this dudes cause their last album is chaotic ……….I will check the shirt out.. to see if I can help

  • http://www.myspace.com/joelbailey Joel Bailey

happens to tons of bands.. happened to the Deftones years ago.. usually happens when you park in a sketchy spot..

once my bands van and trailer disappeared between unloading and soundcheck.. turns out an over-zealous tow truck driver didn’t like the way we were parked and managed to get the van and trailer up on one of those big trucks..

so bands… keep an eye on your sh!t!

  • http://www.last.fm/user/markandrew78 alexwank

love this band. really hope this does not break them up…..

    but get some fucking insurance!

jesus christ. this happens so frequently and there’s so much at stake. i don’t know the premiums but i remember some dude in a not so big band stating in an interview that insurance of this type was not prohibitive, cost wise….. i don;t know….

    • http://www.last.fm/user/markandrew78 alexwank

Just saw this article reported on lambgoat… the webby’s commentary stated “The band does indeed have insurance”

      Thank fuck!

ps. it actually originally said “The band does did indeed have insurance” haha

  • http://www.myspace.com/whitearmsofathena Josh

Man I watched their guitarist school some fuck a couple years ago here in Dallas because he had stolen a couple of their shirts and was selling them outside. I remember him taking him to the trailer, opening it, and then continuing to explain to the kid how all of that shit “IS OUR LIFE, DO I STEAL SHIT FROM YOUR HOUSE? FUCK YOU DUDE!” And then went inside and I think opened with Botchla.

  • no-ghost

stop playing bad music, which means stop being a band. I say break up

  • http://www.myspace.com/breathofmetalproductions pokesmot

that sucks so bad.Good for them that they are picking themselves back up and soldiering on.This kind of shit can end a band.I will be buying the tshirt.

  • no-ghost

can’t someone or somethings take a hint?

  • http://uponwingsofblack.blogspot.com/ \m/Eluveitie\m/

Didn’t Chevelle lose some gear awhile back?

    • Shinaain

They didn’t lose anything, my friend: They were straight ripped off, same as PTW.

IF I remember correctly, they had to cancel a tour and regroup. Can’t find a link to back that up, though. Seem to remember hearing it on the radio, but what do I know?

      • http://uponwingsofblack.blogspot.com/ \m/Eluveitie\m/

By “lose”, I meant have their gear stolen, not like they misplaced it

  • Andrew

Who cares about Chevelle? Feel really bad for PTW, cool band it would seem. Though this may just be karma for touring with Billy Talent. God they’re fucking terrible.

  • DecrystallizingReason

I was gonna see these guys tonight in La Crosse, WI, GOD DAMN IT!! Some waste of life will probably pawn their shit off for smack. Fuck Detroit!

  • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

    Invest in car alarms perhaps?

  • http://www.kingdomofnoise.blogspot.com MetalMatt

Sucks for them. I don’t mind PTW. What makes it worse is that it was ALL their shit. everything.

  • vegan

damn that sucks. best of luck to them(maybe merlin will stop puliin theyre leg)

  • Adam

Yeah… totally couldn’t imagine ALL my gear getting jacked. Anyone who is a musician knows that once your hands get used to your instrument, nothing ever feels quite the same, or sounds quite the same.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrea-Voulgaris/663407462 Andrea Voulgaris

that sucks. it happened to my high school band back when i was a freshman or sophomore. everyone went into some restaurant to get lunch and somehow, these guys discreetly stole a huge white van. all of the poor little percussionists and tuba players had to buy new marching gear, which is actually kinda funny and shitty at the same time.

  • http://hookinmouth.net Scott

Why can’t this shit happen to bands like Attack!Attack! or Waking The Cadaver?

But seriously, I have a bunch of gear in my house and garage and if someone stole any of it I would be pissed as all hell and even more pissed that they came INTO my house to get it.

  • http://twitter.com/SchenkelTown Daisy May Tinklepants

i don’t really like poison the well, but that’s pretty shitty. savages…

  • http://www.myspace.com/thequarrymusic RJMrgn

Good for them having the common sense to have insurance, but nonetheless this is a totally bogus thing to happen to a band – I know how easy it is to get attached to a particular instrument and have it mean much more to you than simply its financial value.

Now, I’m not a massive PTW fan, but as for the people saying a band deserves to get robbed simply because they make music you don’t happen to care for – where the hell do you get off being such objectionable little cunts? Seriously.

    • Shinaain

I feel you, but do you know what site you’re on? In the event you’re unaware, that sort of thing is pretty much par for the course here.

      • http://www.myspace.com/thequarrymusic RJMrgn

Oh I know all to well, it just seems that actively wishing someone divested of their means of livelihood is a new low, even for some of the chumps on here.
