SUPER FUCKIN’ METAL BROS.

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 3:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

When we were in high school, Vince played guitar for a band called Steel Breeze. Yeah, I dunno what the name means either, but they were pretty good, all things considered. Anyways, I mention it not to embarrass Vince (that’s just a bonus!), but because they used to cover the theme music from Super Mario Bros.  And these dudes had the same idea, I guess.

I have no idea why it says System of a Down in the background. Do the mustaches strike the creators of this video as being particularly Armenian or something?

Two quick random thoughts about Mario Bros., while we’re on the topic:

  1. If they’re the Mario brothers, then their last name is Mario, right? So is Mario’s name Mario Mario? What the fuck?
  2. I just read this somewhere and think it’s brilliant: “Do you remember when you were a kid playing Nintendo and it wouldn’t work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no internet or message boards or FAQ’s. We just figured it out. Today’s kids are soft.”

  3. Ben says:

Wow. You managed to come to the same conclusion with that whole “mario mario” thing as the makers of the shit Mario Bros. movie. Good job at sucking.

  4. z says:

It only says system of a down because they are trying to tie in a reference to metal after Nintendo Entertainment System. “Of a down” just happens to grant that allusion.

  5. pokesmot says:

lol that dude been Ben that commented above has managed to officially suck at life.
Mr Bungle does a great Mario song.Anyone ever hear that System Of A Down song about Zelda? That was pretty funny stuff.

  6. Jeremy Rosen says:

  7. kelfro says:

so true about needing to blow in the cartridge, or an alcohol swab, to make it work

  8. Lady Death says:

Did somebody post this already? I can’t remember, but I do know that it’s way better than the other videos on here (except maybe the Dream Theater one) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBgMk4X9MzA

I’ve been doing VG metal covers for years, as have a bunch of friends of mine. I’ll just drop a few links to the past and be on my merry way:

http://dod.vgmix.net – a monthly VG remix competition that’s been going on for 4 years
http://www.metroidmetal.com – a perfect blend of metal, prog, and Metroid
http://www.concatenationrecords.com/vrc016.html – a pretty good collection of the heavier covers I’ve done

I’m not sure who did the SMB one, but they’ve got some chops for sure.

  10. Che Guitarra says:

I’ve heard a lot of metal covers of the Mario Bros. music, but this has to be one of the best ones. Although, I’m close to calling shenanigans over the fact that they also played some Zelda music right in the middle. Doesn’t seem right… what the hell…

    SHENANIGANS!!!!!!!

  11. DJ says:

They might have pulled the animation from this which is a 8 bit version of SoaD’s BYOB.

  12. kjetil says:

    That was pretty fucking cool!

Wasn’t that solo near the 3 minute mark from Zelda ? I actually remember SoD made a song about Link (from zelda) with the very same solo on it.

    • SonOF says:

The confusion here comes from the fact that a few years back there was this song floating around the internet about Link from Legend of Zelda that was mislabeled as being a System of a Down song. System of a Down never made a song about Link or the Legend of Zelda, the band that did coincidently souded somewhat like SOAD and Serj. SOAD has dispelling this rumor for close to a decade, but it’s obvious some people still think SOAD made a Legend of Zelda song.
