Obviously not as much in metal, but don't people realize that certain bands and acts have always gotten an easy road in the music industry?

Yea maybe a shitty band can get a couple million plays on myspace and get on tours quickly but back in the day bands could get signed to a huge major label deal after a couple of shows.

If your band was hot you could get picked up have the label pay to get you on radio and get put on huge tours right off the bat. Those days are over though. Ask most bands in the industry and you have to tour your ass off and be able to draw crowds all over the country before you are going to get those kind of breaks anymore. Also, it is a much much more crowded market and smaller venues are not as abundant.

My main point is just that I am sick of anyone who is in a band for a few years thinking every up and coming band sucks. I am sure we could dig up interviews from the 70's, 80's and 90's of bands talking about how kids today don't have to go through the shit we had to go through. Same shit different day.

Also, there always has been and always will be shitty, predictable pop music just as there will always be certain bands pushing the envelope and taking risks.

Great interview. He comes off way more likeable than I would imagine considering, as a former ETID fan, how obnoxious they can seem or how annoying their fans can be. Really faux-intelligent, arrogant Long Island/upstate NY bro-types

Also, its "The Hellacopters", not "The Helicopters"

this band hasn't made a decent record since Last Night in Town. Hot Damn was just ok. everything after that (especially Gutter) was utter shit. not only that but this band won't play any songs off of Burial Plot Bidding War or Last Night in Town live. any band who ignores a back catalog as good as those first two albums are pathetic and shouldn't tour anymore.
i was really hoping for something different with New Junk. i heard and read all these different interviews where Keith was talking about taking it back to the old school sound... when i finally got a chance to hear the whole album on Exclaim.ca it all became clear (again), everything Keith and Co. said was bullshit. of course as soon as i heard Steve Evetts was producing for the 3rd time i should have known exactly what to expect; a shit album by a bunch of losers. it sounds just like their last two albums... recycled riffs, boring song structures, and Keiths worst lyrics since Gutter.
just retire ETID. you guys suck and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Converge.
it doesn't surprise me that Metalsucks approves this album.

That was one of the best interviews I've read. I enjoyed the honesty and candidness. Andy has always seemed like a genuinely awesome dude that would be a blast to hang out with. This interview solidifies this image. Good read.

Wait... Does this make ETID, Converge, DEP, and Poison the Well the big 4 of metal for us in our mid to late 20's? Unlike the real big 4, this tour could actually happen, sans egos and whatnot.

Maybe it would have been different had I heard this interview rather than read it, but Andy's rapid-fire, stream-of-consciousness style of conversing was a little difficult to process at first. It took me until almost halfway through to jump on his track and decode his transmissions, so to speak. But once he got going, I was very interested to read his thoughts on the recording process, his values in terms of the music he respects, and his incredulity at the get-made MySpace generation of bands. I also appreciate his candor in discussing the fact that bands don't always get to choose who they tour with, even that it doesn't necessarily matter so long as a band is putting themselves out there, networking, and taking every available opportunity to hone their craft. Generally, there should be some kind of baseline of respect between bands for others who are out there doing it, regardless of whether or not you can be on board for everything another artist does (or does not) stand for - to include politics and aesthetics, among other things. Those of us who consume and enjoy the end product don't always have the most complete picture possible of what goes into creating the finished products we love or hate so much, which can mean either we don't always fully appreciate genius or are occasionally taken in by chicanery.

Other points of interest (to me):

* It's not fashionable to NOT dog your label, so points to Andy for speaking frankly on that point, x 2.
* Anthony Bourdain and Jack White as inspirations? Our Dark Lord, Satan, is not amused. (I, however, AM.)

Another good one, guys.

We seriously need to stop putting core on the end of words and using it to label metal bands. Seriously....

I don't know...I thought New Junk was a weak attempt of an album. Sounds like they put no thought into the song writing and god damn, the lyrics are just horrible. All the ironic phrase turning made me want to vomit. ETID is now boring and predictable.
