DEVIN TOWNSEND GIVES YOU A TASTE OF WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE ADDICTED

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 at 10:30am by Axl Rosenberg

addictedAddicted is an excellent name for the new album (and the second release this year alone!) from The Devin Townsend Project, for it is truly addictive. As Townsend himself put it, it’s a “no bullshit” heavy rock confection that’s as catchy as swine flu (and the dynamic between Townsend’s vocals and those of The Gathering’s Anneke van Giersbergen don’t hurt, either). Pussies who thought that Ki was too soft will be happy to hear Devin doing something a little more in line with SYL; real men who recognize that pretty much everything Townsend touches turns to awesome already know what they can expect.

There’s a teaser medley currently streaming on Townsend’s MySpace page; so many of you e-mailed us about it this morning that I’m not even sure why I’m telling you. I guess for the five of you are apparently unaware.

Addicted comes out November 17 on InsideOut Music.

  5. groverXIII says:

At first I thought the album art looked fake… then I was like, “WTF?” Still, ‘Addicted’ sounds good. Very melodic. Can’t wait!

  6. Walker says:

Kinda dug the redo on Hyperdrive that is on there.

  7. Colin says:

I’m all for SYL and even some DT stuff, but this is super pop/rock weirdness. Can’t believe anyone is into this honestly. The chick singing does not fit for me either. Weird.

    • sadisticmagician says:

Well, it’s either one of two things. Either everyone really likes devin’s new stuff and is excited about it or everyone is on Devin’s dick and is willing to praise anything and everything he does. Honestly, it could go either way . . .

      • metalguy says:

i think its the latter. i can tell its good songwriting or whatever but its not my thing and i cnt beleive almost everyone is obssessed with it

  8. Justin Sane says:

the video of him on there tracking the vocals for a song was pretty interesting… you can tell he’s got all his shit dialed down perfect to not need a different room or a screen or anything.

  9. Kuranes says:

I love the Pasty McBalderton video. I can’t wait for this album… Devin and Anneke together on one record.

  10. brookh says:

    i LITERALLY just cane

  11. Skanes says:

Dev hasn’t put out anything I didn’t like, let’s hope this follows the same pattern.

  12. zhitnik says:

Yea, I’ll definitely give this a whirl…I generally like some of the stuff goin on in his albums, whether it be SYL or DT (that acronym always makes me think of Dream Theater first, oh well…)

  13. Lord Bling says:

Ki didn’t push the right buttons with me. It felt like he was holding himself back intentionally, and part of me just couldn’t accept him doing that. However, I’ll take his trying something different over any other artist in the genre. It just felt like an experiment, with mixed results.

Ocean Machine is probably my favorite album ever (definitely top five), so to hear these samples, and to know that he’s bringing back his ‘wall of sound’? And with the former Gathering vocalist? I’m SO there.

  14. hibernum says:

Ok I’ll say it: This is gay gay gay. Positive music? Fuck that. If you want positive music listen to some shitty straight edge hardcore. “I won’t do drugs because I respect myself!”. Whatever. All the best heavy metal has always been negative. This sounds like eurobeat club music with guitar dubs. Fags.

    • Tortiss says:

ya u guize, not enuf eternal hatred for me in this one. only music that is sumoned from the deepist pits of hell fit my liking.

    • Cash says:

So you say this is gay?

Well, I wouldn’t know, I’m not gay. But I’m willing to take your word for it seeing as though you’d know these things.

  15. DemiGod says:

    Haha
    Hail behemoth! Hail Enya!

I’m eagerly awaiting this cd though, I’m looking forward to the re-do of Hyperdrive.

  16. Gaia says:

YES! Best news on MS in a while, Devin never disappoints! Awesome dude, awesome music

  17. Cash says:

Sounds fucking incredible. As you would expect.

  18. Ziltoid says:

    This,.

    Is.

    Awesome.

  19. uLy says:

I gotta chalk up the love for this guy as one of those mysterious i’ll never solve.

  20. Some of it was kinda cool… I’m not really impressed by that teaser… too pop for me… I liked Ki though… this just seems TOO techno-y er somethin’… I dunno… Granted I’m not familiar with EVERYTHING Devin Townsend has done but I was hoping for more SYL sounding stuff on this one… or at least SYL Light.. ha… Guess we’ll see for sure…

Please tell me this is a joke
