UPDATE: DOES ANTHRAX’S WORSHIP MUSIC HAVE A NEW RELEASE DATE?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 4:30pm by

UPDATE: Directly from Megaforce: “No truth to it.” Sorry, kids.

Amazon Worship New Date

Reader Greg Heerdt has helpfully pointed out that Amazon is now listing an October 20, 2009 release date for Anthrax’s Worship Music (or, at least, some import version of Worship Music - the previously announced European release date was October 23). I’ve reached out to the band’s label, Megaforce, to see if there’s any truth to the date or not…

JAMES HETFIELD, ALCOHOLIC, MAKES FUN OF LAYNE STALEY, JUNKIE

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 4:11pm by

This video is from ’94, but still… I’d never seen it before and found it, well, not funny, but, uh, interesting? Let’s say interesting.

I guess Cantrell and company weren’t too offended, though, ’cause in 2006, they performed with Hetfield:

DEMIRICOUS SOLDIER ON, LABEL OR NO

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 3:38pm by

I was seriously worried about the fate of Demiricous, and with good reason, I’d say. The best band ever to sound exactly like Slayer that aren’t actually Slayer, the Hoosier quartet made two killer albums on Metal Blade (produced by Zeuss and ERIK FUCKING RUTAN, respectively) and were endorsed by no less a figure than Mr. Kerry King himself. But then they were, at least as I understand it, more or less completely ripped-off by their then-manager, and they finally parted ways with Metal Blade last year. No one could blame them if they broke up. Bands break up over much less these days.

But now Lambgoat is reporting that Demiricous is, in fact, alive and well, and will enter the studio in November to record a new five-song demo with Gates of Slumber drummer “Iron” Bob Fouts. They still don’t have a label and “will issue the material themselves.” That part confuses me a bit – I mean, I’m thrilled to get to hear new Demiricous music, but is it a demo to try and land them a new label, or is it a self-released EP…? Whatever. Why look a gift horse in the mouth?

Here’s the band’s video for “Vagrant Idol.” Holy shit, this song is heavy.

I SPENT MY ENTIRE MORNING WATCHING LIVE GOJIRA VIDEOS

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 2:43pm by

Axl already shared his thoughts with you about Monday’s stunning Gojira show. Some of you who were there were so excited about it that you couldn’t even wait to share your thoughts until the official review went up, instead opting to opine in the comments section of our post about Doc Coyle playing guitar with Lamb of God. The show was that fucking good (no disrespect meant to Burst, who were great too). It was easily the best we’ve seen all year, and I’m at a loss for how to put it to words. So instead, how about some video? Obviously the sound from a small camera is never going to capture how it really sounded live, and even excepting that these videos never seem to *quite* capture the energy of what it as like to be there… but they do give a close approximation.

Here’s “Backbone,” filmed from the balcony. Listen to the crowd… every was so amped up that it sounds like there were 3,000 people in there when the actual number was probably closer to 300. Just look at the audience frenzy… and the feedback of energy right back from the band. Positively electric.

Several more live clips from the show after the jump…

DEVIN TOWNSEND IS ADDICTED TO PLAYING LIVE

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 2:00pm by

devDevin Townsend has gone on record several times over the past couple of years as saying that he was tired of touring. It was with much delight, then, that Axl noticed the following Tweet from Devin this past July:

I miss playing live. Planning for 2010 in a number of ways. 2 minutes ago from web

And now we’ve got official confirmation that a Devy tour is indeed in the works for 2010. It’ll closely follow the release of Addicted, part 2 of his four-part Devin Townsend Project album suite, which a press release reveals to us is set to see the light of day on November 17th:

Hey folks, Dev here with the update for the second installment of the DTP (Devin Townsend Project). We are just readying the release of album 2, Addicted, so here are a few brief words: With Ki, I kind of strode out in uncharted territories for myself musically, and loved the experience, but during the course of writing this four record project, it was inevitable that I would end up writing a selection of tunes that were very much in line with my back catalogue. This group of songs is the second record in the series, and it is called Addicted.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PERIPHERY GUITARISTS MISHA MANSOOR AND ALEX BOIS

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 1:30pm by

periphery

Another day at Harpo’s Theatre in Detroit: white metal bands, black neighborhood, beefed-up security, and glaring eyes – nothing says “Welcome to Michigan” like playing here. Although forward-thinking on the racial front is lackluster at best, we still have a very prominent and devoted metal crowd ready to use the few dollars they have left to buy a ticket and get shit-faced.

It is here, during the MetalSucks co-sponsored Thrash & Burn tour, that I recently had the opportunity to interview a band that seemingly everyone at MS has been jizzing their pants over: Periphery. These guys just got signed with Sumerian, and THANK GOD. They can absolutely shred, and even if you’re not too keen on clean vocals, I think you need to get the stick out of your ass and check these guys out ASAP.

Their soon-to-be “mass appeal” is more then I would normally advocate. Nonetheless, just because they will most likely be your younger sister or brother’s favorite new band (if your sister of brother is totally bad-ass), they may also be yours as well. There is no way you can deny their talent. Everything about this band is correct. Everything is in motion. They are insoluble. They are the lime in your tequila. They just… work.

The band’s founder, Misha Mansoor, is not only super-talented, but also gives his music away. For free, as Kip Wingerschmidt recently informed us. And not just one or two songs, either – over one-hundred tracks, in studio-quality audio. If that doesn’t convince you to check them out, then you need to check yourself off. Get it?

Either way, Misha and go-guitarist Alex Bois were so very gracious to sit down with me in their conversion van and tell me all about how they got to where they are now, and where they are going to go. I would assume they might dominate most of the Sound Scan posts here at MS in 2010. But hey, to be fair, so will Miley Cyrus. So don’t listen to me, I just have a vagina and I am really, really cool and super smart.

METAL INJECTION/MYGOODEYE FREE MUSIC VIDEO CONTEST FINALISTS ANNOUNCED – CAST YOUR VOTE!!!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 12:00pm by

giveaway

Back in July, our brostafas at Metal Injection announced what has to be one of the most awesome contests in the history of awesome contests: one lucky unsigned band, selected by MI readers, would get to have heavy metal auteur David Brodsky of My Good Eye direct their video, absolutely free of cost.

Well, all the unsigned bands that submitted demos to the contest have been whittled down to ten finalists, and now’s your time to help pick a winner. It’s easy – just go here, listen to the bands, and give a horns up to whichever ones you like. You can only vote for each band one, but you can vote for as many different bands as you like.

I’m not sure if it would be kosher for me to tell you who I think you should vote for. I will say that as I type this, I just happen to be wearing a The Binary Code t-shirt. Just putting that out there.

Go vote now.

VERY LIKELY THE WORST METALLICA COVER I’VE EVER HEARD

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 11:30am by

I don’t know who you are, Stefanie Heinzmann, but give yourself a big ol’ pat on the back. You’ve managed to make Avril Lavigne look like Chuck Schulinder. I’d rather listen to Attack Attack! cover Katy Perry, fer Chrissakes.

I’m saying this sucks.

MS Maniac Charlie Famer sent this to us, and claims that it was a big hit in Switzerland last year. Assuming that’s true, I’d just like to take this moment to say suck it, Switzerland.

FUN WITH MARILYN MANSON SWINE FLU PUNS

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 11:00am by

marilyn mansonSo, Marilyn Mansion has Swine Flu. This is very amusing. Says Manson, “I know everyone will suggest that fucking a pig is how this disease was obtained. However, the doctor said, my past choices in women have in no way contributed to me acquiring this mysterious sickness.”

Let’s have some fun with this, shall we? Let’s play a game where the object is to come up with Manson-related Swine Flu puns, and the prize is the satisfaction of knowing you’re hilarious. I’m gonna go first:

  • The Beautiful Pig-Squeal
  • Piggy Ramirez
  • Eat Me, Eat Me
  • The Pork Show

Now your turn… go!

VINCE, AXL AND ATREYU ON NOISECREEP’S “CREEP SHOW”

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 10:02am by

Last week Vince and I guested on Noisecreep‘s “Creep Show” video podcast. You can watch the episode below.

In addition to the regular “Creep Show” gang – Noisecreep editor Seth Werkheiser, news columnist and writer Chris Harris, and Revolver senior writer and Noisecreep scribe Jon Wiederhorn – we joined call-in guests Brandon Saller and Alex Varwhateverthefuck from Atreyu. Because we were guests in someone else’s house, we decided to be polite and play nice with the Atreyu dudes… so apologies to anyone who was hoping we’d get into it with the metalcore (excuse me… “metallic rock”) band.

We had a lot of fun – in fact this was Vince’s second time on the show – and hope to visit with the Noisecreep family again real soon. Enjoy.

GOJIRA/BURST/ZOROASTER/SPLOOGE.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 at 5:00pm by

gojira-live

Last night I told Burst vocalist Linus Jägerskog -  a truly chill dude who not only works his band’s merch booth, but is more than happy to pose for photos, sign shit, etc. – that he broke my heart. How could this be the first time we were seeing them live? And why oh why was it the last?

Burst were fucking great, man. So great that when the shitard behind me yelled “Stand up, you faggot!” at guitarist Robert Reinholdz (who was, for reasons I’m not clear about, seated for the entire performance) and then called for Jägerskog to “hang yourself tonight,” I seriously considered throwing my beer at him. And if any band that wasn’t Gojira was going on after Burst, getting kicked out of the show to defend the Swedes’ honor might have seemed totally worth it.

But GOJIRA. Wow. Here are some random thoughts that ran through my brain as we watched them give the best show of the year so far for the second time this year:

Hey kids,

GET YOUR INJECTION OF PIG DESTROYER

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 at 4:38pm by

Besides a pair of performances by Gojira, Pig Destroyer’s Brooklyn show with Brutal Truth and Repulsion was one of the best gigs I’ve attended this year. And, but of course, those hairy apes from Metal Injection were on hand to capture the insanity on tape, so that those of you who couldn’t make can see how awesome it was, and weep for what you missed.

So here’s PD playing “Loathsome” off of Phantom Limb. Check back with Metal Injection throughout the week for more grind-tastic footage of the show.

And, oh yeah: check out Blake Harrison with the power tools. Rad.

WILLIAM DUVALL LOVES THE CLASSICS

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 at 4:30pm by

chains5601

I think that William DuVall is ready for his close-up. Black Gives Way to Blue kills, and proves that Alice in Chains have done what even the most cynical of us (namely, me) thought was impossible: this band can carry on without Layne Staley. And, yes, Jerry Cantrell deserves a BJ or twelve for that fact, but this would be just a glorified make-over for Cantrell’s solo band if DuVall wasn’t a killer front man.

So. MetalSucks Maniac Amanda Dobbs has tipped us off to the fact that DuVall has made a list of ten songs that “blow him away” for AOL. And while there’s a goodly amount of rock on the list, it’s probably not what you expect. I don’t wanna spoil it here, but… the most recent song on the list was recorded in 1971. So if you were hoping for some metal… stop.

But they’re all great songs, and give some real insight into where DuVall is coming from. Check out the list here.

BLOODS, CRIPS… JUGGALOS?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 at 4:10pm by

JUGGALOS

We all know that 99.9% of all Juggalos are idiots (I know one cool one), but are they dangerous? When I think of bad-asses who wear spooky clown make-up, a lot of names come to mind – John Wayne Gacy, The Joker, Tim Curry in It – but Juggalos ain’t any of them.

Well, it looks like certain police officials here in the States disagree with me. Thus spake Noisecreep:

coalesce remix

I hadn’t listened to Coalesce’s Ox in a bit, so I threw it on again this weekend, and holy shit. Why did so much good music come out this year? How the fucking fuck am I supposed to narrow all this shit down to just ten albums? Fuck you, brilliant musicians!!!

But I digress. Ox. It’s killer. And now Coalesce is giving fans a chance to re-mix some of the album to win some cool shit. The band says:

“LET US SLAY”: GWAR CONTINUE TO MAKE INNOVATIONS IN INTERGALACTIC TRAVEL

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 at 3:00pm by

There’s really nothing I can say about “Let Us Slay,” the new video from Gwar and director David Brodsky, that would be funnier than what Oderus Urungus himself has to say about it. So I’ll just let him speak, via a press release:

“LET US SLAY” is the first video from our new epic album, ‘LUST IN SPACE’, and provides actual first-hand footage of GWAR’s recent travels through outer space and our cosmic struggle against that intergalactic asshole Cardinal Syn…this should put an end to any speculation that we are not really from outer space…you can really see us flying around on spaceships and shit!”

After a huge hit of crack laced with horse tranquilizer and kitty litter, the warty front-thing continued, “This is just the latest GWAR video from esteemed director David Brodsky, whom we have worked w/ before on the amazing ‘SCHOOL’S OUT’ video. He is a very talented and effusively garrulous sort of guy, and he works for rocks! Plus I am particularly excited about the many dance moves that I executed in the course of the video…I recently studied under Christopher Walken, and after working very hard he gave me the nickname “Twinkletoes!”

That part about Brodsky working for rocks is true, by the way. What Oderus neglects to mention is that he uses the rocks to beat people and take their money, so it’s not like he’s going broke or whatever.

Here’s the video. It’s pretty awesome. Enjoy it.
