CHILDREN OF BODOM, JUST CHILLIN’, PLAYIN’ SOME CREEDENCE

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 3:30pm by

Yesterday I wondered aloud, what Children of Bodom covering Creedence Clearwater Revival would sound like? And now I have my answer.

Here’s the video for “Lookin’ Out My Back Door.” It comes off the band’s new cover album, Skeletons in the Closet, which drops September 23 on Spinefarm.

SUPER FUCKIN’ METAL BROS.

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 3:00pm by

When we were in high school, Vince played guitar for a band called Steel Breeze. Yeah, I dunno what the name means either, but they were pretty good, all things considered. Anyways, I mention it not to embarrass Vince (that’s just a bonus!), but because they used to cover the theme music from Super Mario Bros.  And these dudes had the same idea, I guess.

I have no idea why it says System of a Down in the background. Do the mustaches strike the creators of this video as being particularly Armenian or something?

Two quick random thoughts about Mario Bros., while we’re on the topic:

LIVE NATION ANNOUNCES CRAZY CONCERT DEAL FOR THE REST OF 2009

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 2:40pm by

live nation club passportLive Nation, one of the big, mega-conglomerate concert promoters in the U.S., is offering a stupidly enticing deal to concertgoers for the rest of 2009: for a limited time only, fans can buy The Live Nation Club Passport for $49.99, All-In and No Fees, to see every eligible show at Live Nation clubs in their city for the rest of the year. This is such a good deal that even if you only plan on going to two or three metal shows for the remainder of 2009 you’ll be getting your money’s worth.

The catch is that the Passport doesn’t *guarantee* entry — so if a show is sold out in advance or you arrive once the venue has filled up, you’re out of luck. Also, from what I can tell, the initial list of available metal shows is kinda weak, though Live Nation promises there will be more added daily. Check out the list of eligible shows and venues; for New York, the closest we get to metal is Stryper. A quick look at other markets shows mixed results, but it seems that the smaller the market is, the better chance you have of good metal shows being included in the program… and hopefully, more killer shows will be added with time.

What’s interesting to note is that Live Nation could potentially be taking a big hit on this.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN HAVE ENTERED THE STUDIO

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 2:30pm by

As of today DEP and their producer, Steve Evetts, have been in the studio working on the band’s new album, Option Paralysis, for ten days. And besides getting a new DEP record in ’10, y’know what that means? We get the new de rigeur in-the-studio video updates of DEP in the studio! Hoo-ray!

Here’s the first entry. You don’t really get to hear any new music, but you do get to see that new drummer Bill Rymer can hold shit down (probably) just as well as Chris Pennie or Gil Sharone.

MACHINE HEAD’S ROBB FLYNN IS JUST A FAN AT HEART

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 2:00pm by

Okay. So Manfred Nuggets clearly wins the “Tipster of the Day” award.

This is exactly what it looks like: Machine Head’s Robb Flynn. At Wembley Stadium. After his band opened for Metallica. In the crowd. Singing “Master of Puppets” along with the fans.

Regardless of what you think of Machine Head, you need to give the dude props for this. That is very cool.

WATCH THIS VIDEO, OR DYING FETUS WILL STRAP YOU TO A CHAIR AND MAKE YOU WATCH IT

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 1:30pm by

“Shepard’s Commandment,” the new video from Dying Fetus, is pretty typical death metal shit. But it’s still totally worth watching. For one thing, the song is pretty good, but also – bassist Sean Beasley finger taps! When was the last time you saw a friggin’ bass player do any tapping? For shame, metal bassists who aren’t Beasley. For shame.

“Shepard’s Commandment” comes of Dying Fetus’ new album, Descend into Depravity, which is out now on Relapse.

METALLICA AND MEGADETH GO TOGETHER LIKE ISRAELIS AND PALESTINIANS

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 1:00pm by

Why, it was just yesterday that Rob Trujillo was saying if the Big Four tour goes down, “there’d be a lot of egos” to deal with, but that all the beef would be between Megadeth and Slayer, not, say, Megadeth and Metallica.

And then this morning we got a link to this clip from MS Maniac Manfred Nuggets:

Not that Hetfield’s voice sounds so good these days, but holy shit, is that fucking funny. And proof that there’s no love lost between Hetfield and Mustaine.

Sorry, Rob.

HEY THERE! THE NEW CHUCK MOSLEY SONG ISN’T HALF BAD!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 12:00pm by

cm34Former Faith No More (or “Faith No More,” as it’s mysteriously written on his website) vocalist Chuck Mosley is offering a new song, “Tractor,” for free download. And while I expected it to suck big hairy hippo nuts, it’s actually pretty decent.

I mean, don’t get me wrong. This is not a Faith No More song. But it’s kinda catchy, the guitar solo is really simple but I dig, and Mosley’s voice seems to have aged pretty well – he doesn’t sound like he has a cold the way he did back in the We Care a Lot/Introduce Yourself days. I would definitely give the rest of his album a listen based on this song.

Mosley’s new solo album, Will Rap Over Hard Rock For Food, is available now. Apparently it features the third re-recording of “We Care a Lot,” with updated lyrics. And while the very thought of such a re-recording irritates the shit outta me, FNM keyboardist Roddy Bottum plays on the track, so I guess I kinda-sorta don’t have any right to complain.

Download the song here, then come back and let us know what you think.

POISON THE FUCKING BASTARDS WHO STEAL BAND VANS

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 11:30am by

vw bus limoThis always just breaks my heart. I’ve only got 4 guitars, most of which I barely play, but if any single one of them were stolen I’d be crushed. Imagine having all of your stuff EVER including guitars you’ve had forever, thousands of dollars worth of amplification and other gear AND your clothes and fucking everything you own stolen. THAT’s what just happened to Poison the Well. I can’t even imagine. Yet the guys have the goodwill and positive outlook to soldier on and say, “Pissed about our gear and passionate about this band as ever.” From their MySpace blog:

So this morning we woke up at our delightful Marriot Courtyard hotel (priceline, get into it) and walked outside to get in the van to head to Chicago for our second show of the tour. Only problem, it isn’t there.

NEW BTBAM MUSIC. BAM!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 11:00am by

There’s so much great new metal coming out right now that I’m completely overwhelmed by trying to listen to all of it. New releases from Scar Symmetry, Living Colour and Alice in Chains have dominated my playlist this past week, while I haven’t even really gotten the time to pay proper attention to the latest from Converge and Black Dahlia Murder. New releases from The Destro, Revocation, Dethklok and Devin Townsend are right around the corner, as is Between the Buried and Me’s latest The Great Misdirect. I’m sure I’m forgetting a few, too. Fuck my life. Did I really just say that? Fuck me for saying “fuck my life.” My life rules.

So, BT-fucking-BAM. “Obfuscation,” a song of which we posted a live clip a couple of weeks back, is available in full at VictoryMetal.com or via the nifty widget below. Just enter in your email address, and ye shall have new BTBAM. Bam! (Word to the wise: I had trouble getting the widget to work in Firefox)

One-listen version: everything is more “er” than Colors. Proggier, heavier, melodic-er, ambitious-er. I’ll hold off on saying “better” until I hear the full record. The Great Misdirect drops October 27th.

ALICE IN CHAINS, HAUNTED BUT NOT PHASED

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 10:30am by

The first words you hear on Facelift are “Scary’s on the wall/ Scary’s on his way.” The first words you hear on Dirt are “I believe them bones are me/Some say we’re born into the grave.”

The first words you’ll hear on Black Gives Way to Blue are “Hope, a new beginning/Time, time to start living.”

I’m saying this band has had a major shift in life-philosophy.

Here’s an album sampler. It’s a too-brief taste of what the band has in store for you when the record is released on September 29.

After the jump, check out Jerry Cantrell doing an acoustic performance of the title track, which is the last song on the album. I’d urge you to pay attention to the lyrics if you can. And don’t forget that Elton John plays piano on the studio version of the song.

FOR RAMMSTEIN, SIZE DOES MATTER IN PORNOGRAPHIC NEW MUSIC VIDEO (NOT SAFE FOR WORK!!!)

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 10:10am by

rammstein - pussyIf this is a publicity stunt to get people talking about the band after such a long time away, it’s working. The outrageous album artwork was only the tip of the, um, iceberg… Rammstein have gone and released a 4-minute porn flick and called it a music video.

“You have a pussy, I have a dick-uh! So what’s the problem? Let’s do it quick.” Add funny German accents, lots of tits, pussy, bondage, and a song that’s so ridiculously over the top, cheesy and catchy… and I’d say we’ve got a winner!

Rammstein seem to want  you to visit their website to watch the video — or, rather, I guess the uncensored version is way too obscene to ever get through YouTube’s screens — so check it out here, then come back and tell us what you think. Wow.

ATTACK ATTACK! HOPE THEIR BOYFRIEND DON’T MIND IT

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 5:00pm by

First of all, major credit goes to reader Daniel Stalder for bringing this to our attention.

Attack Attack! have covered Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.”

There is nothing especially remarkable about this; shitty screamo bands cover crappy pop songs all the time these days.

However, the lyrics to this particular song make the cover that much more horrifying/hilarious.

Check it out:

BLACK DAHLIA MURDER FANS: TUNE INTO TO TONIGHT’S METAL INJECTION LIVECAST

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 4:30pm by

livecast-bdm

‘Cause the muthafuckin’ man himself, Trevor “Heartburn” Strnad, is going to call in. He’ll be discussing BDM’s excellent new album, Deflorate (in stores now!), taking questions from other callers, and participating in MI’s patented “Death or No Death” game, where you try to guess which death metal band names are real, and which ones are fake. The last time Rob Pasbani and the gang played that game, it was with The Red Chord’s Gunface, and he won. Can one Metal Blade artist who likes to act silly out perform another Metal Blade artist who likes to act silly? You’ll have to tune in to find out!

The show starts at 8 pm EST tonight; you can listen by going here. The Metal Injection Livecast is on Wednesday nights now, not Fridays, so you’re shit out of excuses to miss it!!!

ZOMBIES!!!

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 4:00pm by

This video rules. So does the song. The band is Chickenhawk, and the song is “I hate this, do you like it?”

If you don’t like this video, please direct your ire at MS Maniac Alex Loveless for sending it in.

Our questions, his answers, after the jump.

I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR ANDREW W.K.

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 3:00pm by

caddy lack

My enthusiastic endorsement of Andrew W.K.’s 2002 album I Get Wet met with a mixed reaction from the MetalSucks readership, ranging from anger to disbelief to teary confessions of the album’s power to yield happiness and a sense of the unstoppable phenomenon known as THE PARTY. I appreciated his follow-up The Wolf, but as I’ve stated before, it couldn’t compete with I Get Wet. Subsequently, things started to get strange for the white-shirted rocker, as he attempts to explain in a recent piece for U.K.-based periodical The Guardian.

DON’T BE A HYPOCRITE; GET EXCITED FOR HYPOCRISY!

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 2:30pm by

hypocrisy - a taste of extreme divinityAnyone ’round here excited for Hypocrisy’s new album A Taste of Extreme Divinity? Me me me! Music aside, the album’s cover artwork is easily the most corny / awesome thing I’ve seen all year. Reminds me a lot of the cover for In Flames’ Whoracle.

I’ve actually really never gotten into Hypocrisy, not because I have anything at all against them but because they’re just one of those bands for whom no one ever came to me and said,” Dude, YOU, Vince Neilstein, need to listen to Hypocrisy.” Because if someone had done this I surely would’ve listened, and I surely would’ve loved. Everything that I have heard to date from the band, I have liked. So what held me back? I don’t know.

Here they are performing “Roswell 47″ at Summer Breeze this past (sigh) Summer. A Taste of Extreme Divinity drops Oct 23 in Europe and Nov 3 in the U.S.

TICKING FOR THE DETHKLOK (LISTENING PARTY)

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 2:00pm by

Dethklok’s Dethalbum II promises to be twice as awesome as their Dethalbum – in fact, this record might actually make you kill people in horrifically violent ways, or be killed in a horrifically violent way, as the band’s fans often are on Metalocalypse. It’s that friggin’ good.

The album comes out September 29 on Williams Street, but our friends at Metal Insider are getting the party started early with a listening party here in NYC a week from today, Wednesday, September 23 at Fontana’s, the site of many an awesome metal party. This is your chance to get drunk, hear the record early, stalk Vince and myself, and throw yourselves at MI’s resident Quaker Jew, Bram Teitelman. Ladies, if you’re not a total cow and ask real nice, I’d wager Bram will sleep with you. Just putting that out there. He’s a very giving dude.
