GOJIRA’S JOE DUPLANTIER PICKS HIS FAVORITE METAL VIDEOS
Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at 9:30am by Axl RosenbergMere hours before Gojira played the best show of 2009, our friends at Metal Injection interview G to the Jira main man Joe Duplantier, and even got him to pick his favorite metal videos. No shock: the man has good taste. So, needless to say, this is pretty awesome.
Vince’s own interview with Joe should go up sometime next week. You’ll wanna read that, too. Trust me.

Gojira fuckin rules! No matter how many times I say or hear that, it won’t get boring. Gojira fuckin rules!
+1
This guy looks to me like some open-minded science professor.
He’s French and playing a stereotypically American brand of music. Right there that says a lot.
He’s really cool to his crowds too in concert.
Ok. I am now a Trepalium fan.
Yeah, that shit tripped me out when it got going,I have not heard anything quite like that. i immediately wrote that name down for some checking into later.
+1 me too.
This is the first I ever heard of them and I was definitely impressed.
Metalsucks guys: Please put these dudes on your radar if you haven’t allready. I want to hear more.
Trepalium and Manimal are the 2 French bands they name-drop the most, when asked. Joe has mentioned in the past that he’s such a firm supporter of these bands that he would like to one day be in the position to be able to bring them to the States to tour with Gojira. Others, mentioned only in passing: Gronibard and Dagoba. French metal has exploded lately, so I can no longer separate which other bands I know of because the Gojira guys have mentioned them or because I found them in other places.
Yeah, I’ve searched around for Manimal, but haven’t had any luck. Granted, that was quite awhile ago, and I probably didn’t try very hard…
Awesome name, though.
Yep, I’m retarded:
http://www.myspace.com/manimale
I was just logging in to tell you’re they’re on Joe’s top friends on myspace. Good work! lol
Ok, I like this too. Gojira-y with FNM-ish (or even, like Faster Pussycat, maybe) vocals. Sick.
Ok, fuck me, these guys are great. I think I like Manimal even better than Trepalium…
Nice hearing death-y metal w/out traditional growly-gravelly death vocals.
Viva la France!
Bucket: I think I’ve plugged them here before, but you should check out Joe and Mario’s side project, Empalot (www.myspace.com/empalot). Brief overview: Sort of like the French Mr Bungle, only different – jazz, avant garde, and the kitchen sink thrown in over prog-metal tunes. The way a song begins is not guaranteed to be the way it ends, and there’s often 3-4 songs in 1.
Also, if you look on YouTube, you can find at least one video of Joe performing “Dead Meat” with Manimal at a live show in France a few years ago.
Cool, thanks! I’ll check em out. I love Mr Bungle.
that 3rd vid is a bugout but the song is fuckin awesome
the man has good taste
Gojira certainly lived up to all the hype about their live show. Amazing. Saw then in Atlanta last week and seeing them again tomorrow night in Orlando. Can’t wait!
at the social right? i’m going to man
Nice. Yup, the Social. Never been there before, but I hear its a cool little venue. I’m driving in from Jacksonville.
Joe is the shit. I loved all the songs except maybe Despised Icon. I was also really hoping he’d pick a Tool song. Also I have to say wow, Trepalium. Never heard of these guys and I LOVE that song. So crazy to have a working fusion of Death Metal and boogie. That’s like a peanut butter and sardine sandwich that surprisingly tastes delicious.
2011 huh Joe? It’s OK being a Tool fan for so long I know how to wait.
One more thing is that this guy is chill as fuck and really down to earth. He’s a credit to the French people for sure. I saw him and his awesome band early May in Manhattan and it was amazing. I just hope that they decide to drop Volbeat off the Metallica tour and have Gojira come the entire way because seeing Metallica, LOG and Gojira in one night would be so sick. I live near NYC and I don’t feel like driving south to see this.
Despised Icoon >YOU
Me > Dog Turd > You > Despised Icon
I meant to ask you guys last week if you’d managed to get another interview.
Post haste, sirs. You know what I’m telling you to do.
“G to the Jira” = Gjira? BEING “URBAN” FAIL.
You do realize the metalsucks guys like me are based out of the NYC area right?
You = FAIL
aaaah Sick Boogie Murder is such a good song
I think this article is a great counter-point to what Eyal Levi posted last. Obviously metal is exploding in France thanks to Gojira.
Well… not really
I subscribe to The Fix podcasts over iTunes and then listen to them at work on my iPod. For those who can’t watch videos at work: At the end of this, Rob asks Joe whether or not he will continue to work with Cavalera Conspiracy and Joe said he’s not allowed to say just yet, since it’s not his band. He then reiterated that Gojira is taking time off next year (A BREAK, *NOT BREAKING UP* – taking time writing, NEW ALBUM PROJECTED 2011).
In an interview he gave last week, he said the shows in France in November would be the last for Gojira this year before they take a break. I kept hoping they would announce a few more US dates before the end of the year; alas, it will not be.
The pictoral series they’re doing over the band’s MySpace for the US tour is pretty sweet. You all should check it out – the guys are actually multi-talented artists and more than just amazing musicians…as though that weren’t enough, but still…..
Gojira could be the best band on the planet right now. In any genre. The most humble nice dudes maybe ever in metal. Sucks that they are not doing another US run this year. Would love to go out and see them again.
I agree, although in their defense they’ve already done 3-4 US tours (one headlining, with some intermittent headlining dates lately) in the last year alone. I want them to come back because (1) I’m greedy and (2) I haven’t gotten see them yet (my own stupid fault). But if calling this album cycle after this tour increases the chances that they’ll have more to give us the next go ’round, I’ll take it and be fully supportive.
The Metal Hammer podcast for July 10, 2009 (no link from work, find it somewhere on http://www.metalhammer.co.uk or iTunes, fast forward to 50:25 for a 10-minute interview with Joe) illustrates how badly this band needs a break. Joe sounds uncharacteristically weary in it, and I can’t help but hope that the Metallica tour has perked him up at least a little bit since that interview was given.
Fuck 2011 =(
