R.I.P. MIKE ALEXANDER, 1977 – 2009

I’ve just received an e-mail from Earache Records alerting me that Mike Alexander, bassist for U.K. thrashers Evile, has passed away. He was thirty-two years old.
Evile members Matt Drake, Ol Drake and Ben Carter have released the following statement:
“This is so hard to find the words to express fully how we feel. We can’t believe or accept what’s happened. One minute we’re talking to our buddy, Mike, the next minute we can never speak to him again.
There’s so many things rushing through our heads that we want to say, do and feel. We half expect him to come round the corner and call us ‘dickheads’. We can’t get our heads around it.
It upsets us so much that he was away from his family when this happened, although knowing Mike, we’re at least glad he was on tour doing what he loves.
We’re lost for words. We all miss him so much already. He was such a headstrong, genuinely nice guy who loved music and his family. We’ve got so many brilliant memories with him.
Our hearts go out to his daughter, family and friends at this tragic, difficult time.
Mike is much loved and is sorely missed.
Rest in peace, brother.”
I’m not going to pretend I’m a huge Evile fan, but the band are clearly very talented and a rising force in metal. And to lose someone so young, and clearly so devoted to the art of metal, is always tragic.
Our thoughts are with the band and the rest of Mike’s friends and family.

Can’t say I’m deeply affected by this, I never got a chance to meet the man or even listen to his music (though I fully intend to do that as soon as I can). I’m more curious than anything as to how it happened, and I hope Evile doesn’t pack it up because I’ve been wanting to give them a listen since I heard about them. I love thrash and it’s a shame the genre lost one of its performers, especially from such a promising band and at such a young age. Hopefully he’s jamming with Cliff Burton, Phil Lynott, John Entwistle and all the other fantastic bassists that were taken before their time.
Yeah, all great (phenoms in some cases) bassists. But really Elly, you wanna hear five bassists all playing at the same time?
Given how much I love the bass, I say why not? Count ME in.

I don’t understand how someone who’s 32 just drops dead, without any prior medical condition. Even cigarettes and fast food won’t kill you until you’re in your 40s, and you die a slow death. It doesn’t make any sense. When this happened to the guy from Drowning Pool they said it was an undiagnosed heart condition, but then a year or so later Ozzy Osbourne accidentally revealed in an interview that he died of a cocaine overdose. He said “one of the guys on Ozzfest (whatever year) did too much coke and died”, so he didn’t mention the dude directly, but only one guy died on that Ozzfest tour. Whoops.
I’m not saying Mike Alexander was a cokehead or anything, or that his death was his own fault. It’s just a crazy mystery.

I sort of met Mike maybe a year ago. I’m from the US but had a friend in the UK I would chat with and he was good friends with Mike. Mike had gone to my friends establishment for something while we were chatting and he introduced me to Mike threw web CAMS. He had such a bright friendly smiling. You could just tell from his expressions he was a awesome laid back guy, that I’m sure was great to be around, My sincerest condolances to his family, band members, and to any and all of those who may be grieving his passing.
