EXODUS: RETURN OF THE SHOVEL HEAD

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at 3:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

There’s been a lot of talk lately about how Megadeth have made their best album in years, Slayer have made their best album in years, some people (but not me!) think that Metallica made their best album in years, and so on and so forth. But where’s the love for Exodus? They might not play venues as big as their aforementioned peers, but they started their own comeback in 2004 with Tempo of the Damned, and things only got better on their subsequent releases Shovel Headed Kill Machine and The Atrocity Exhibition – Exhibit A. Even if I personally didn’t agree with the decision to re-record Bonded by Blood with Rob Dukes, the band has been putting out “their best album in years” for five years now. And I caught them with Dukes last year, and they slayed. These guys are at the top of their game right now.

So I’m excited for their new DVD, Shovel Headed Tour Machine (Live At Wacken And Other Assorted Atrocities). It’s a three disc collection that will include a DVD of their live set from last year’s Wacken fest, a CD of that same show, and then another DVD with a documentary covering the aforementioned, all-important last half-decade. Plus I’m sure there’s a ton of bonus features.

Alas, the DVD doesn’t come out ’til January 15, but here’s a trailer to tide you over. Looks pretty rad to me.

I totally and completely love Exodus. And thank Chuck Billy (I often substitute Chuck Billy for God) that MetalSucks is working for me now, because it’s been a poop on the floor kind of day over here on the west coast.

    Exodus!!!

I kinda forgot about Exodus after Toxic Waltz. Then around ‘97 they put out “their best album in years”, Another Lesson in Violence. Killer live album! I also disagreed with re-recording Bonded by Blood, cause they practically did that on Another Lesson in Violence, with Paul Baloff no less!

Every album they’ve put out in the 2000’s is better than the last, I can’t wait for The Atrocity Exhibition…Exhibit B.

Also I must say Testament is writing “their best stuff in years” too! I think both of these bands are putting out better material than Metallica, Megadeth or Slayer.

Atrocity A was an awesome album, from a band I never really paid any attention to. Looking forward to B.

You can bet your mama’s sweet ass ill have this baby pre-ordered.

If there is a “big four” tour or what not, it would be criminal not to include these guys or Testament. Like the above stated, these guys have been putting out quality tunes for the last 5 years. Not Some kind of bullshit and Deaf magnetic.

Exodus is my alltime thrash favourite, first thrashband I heard besides the ‘Big Four’. Hearing War Is My Shepherd for the first time was one of the biggest revelations I had listening to metal….
But when does Exhibit B come out?
First they said: Exhibit B will come out a year after A(that was in 2007), then they started touring for 2 years(seen them like 4 times in like 16 months), suddenly they bring the news that they would release a DVD this summer, now it’s January 15….ah well, lets hope they get in the studio after this: It’s been more than 2 frigging years since Exhibit A now!

Went to see Exodus with Kreator on Sunday and they fucking killed.

  7. syclonus says:

shovel headed kill machine fucking ripped. great album. and death magnetic was metallica’s best album in years. not saying much, but it’s technically true. exodus (along with testament) are definitely at the top of thrash, id put their new releases over anything anthrax, megadeth, or metallica hs put out in years.

  8. Nate says:

I LOVE exodus. Been waiting forever this DVD.

  9. Rik Powell says:

Despite it being pretty awful, I would still consider Death Magnetic to be Metallica’s best album in years, by quite a wide margin.

But yeah, as far as I’m concerned when it comes to 80s thrash bands, it’s all about Exodus and Testament.

I’ve been trying to get people into Exodus for years but it seems that the people who enjoy Toxic Waltz don’t like .44 Magnum Opus as much. i’m the opposite.
