I MEAN, COME ON, PEOPLE

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at 1:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

MetalSucks Maniac DannyJD sent us this video by a band I’ve never heard of, Royal Anguish. And, uhhh… I don’t know what to say about it. I know some readers, like our old pal Sammy (who’s been crying foul here at MS long before Revrant or Ziltoid!), think that music videos are, at least in this day and age, completely unnecessary. That might be true, but I still love ‘em when they’re well-done, and a few times a year, you see one that reminds you just how awesome they can be.

But this is not one of those videos. If I were Sammy, I’d point to this video directly to make my anti-music video argument.

The best part comes fairly early on, at the 21 second mark, when the dude playing the piano looks like right into the camera. He’s like that vaudeville pianist from Family Guy, only eeeeeevvvviiiilllll.

I did not know Ben Roethlisberger was doing vocals now…

    pretty cool song, shit vid

  3. vincent p says:

I don’t love this song, but I definitely would have thought higher of it if I’d heard it without the visuals.

  4. Prolapse says:

You know all those band nerds you made fun of while you were sitting in the auto shop garage smoking weed?
Well, this is what happens when they start a metal band

  5. Sacajawea says:

Not a video comment but, shouldn’t your MetalSucks headling thing say 1,293rd, not 1,293th?

We covered that. I’m sure that was the point.

  6. Sammy says:

Except in the case of unintentionally funny videos…like this one. THOSE are awesome videos and deserve a place in the modern world. Like on Metalsucks, for us to laugh at.

  7. ripptuff says:

kind of like Unexpect, but lower budget and without the awesome spectacle of the bass dudes conklin

    • Strapping Young Lad says:

my thoughts exactly. nowhere NEAR as original either. No voilin, 9 string Bass, vocals weren’t as good, etc…. but besides that, it wasn’t a bad song… the video was just funny as hell!

  8. alliaphagist says:

haha I saw this when it first came out. I kind of know the drummer. He’s cool, but this is one of the most embarrassing videos ever. I love the keyboardist’s eyes so much.

  9. CrapMcPoopin says:

Looks like David Brodsky shot it… don’t you guys blow him for every video he has out?

    • stu1 says:

You’re totally right! It was shot with a camera, and there’s a band and some cuts. Total Brodsky style.

      • IWRESTLEDYOURMOMONCE says:

You’re totally right! It was shot with a sub-par camera, and there’s a shitty band and some lousy cuts. Total Brodsky style.

        FTFY…

  10. Zoker says:

Wow… the song sucks, heavily. At least the video is funny but the song… I mean, come on, people… that solo at 1:23 is like a punch on the teeth… and the second one is not better… and the keyboard goes totally random…

  11. Toxteth O'Grady says:

“No dudes, piano is totally brutal! I promise.”

  12. poopsmcgee says:

i might like attack attack! better.

  13. Ddon says:

Anti-climactic is the first word with that comes to mind… The next two are awkward staring.
Its heavy tho… kudos for that.

  14. Drew says:

Wow. I guess these dudes listen to a LOT of Bleeding Through. I was trying to think of which song they ripped, but I think the correct answer is all of them.

    • nick says:

Bleeding Through? Really? They’re ripping off Bleeding Through and not old Amorphis, The Gathering, Paradise Lost, or any of the other bands that were doing this in the early 90’s?

  15. nick says:

I can appreciate this for what it is. I’ll dig most gothic death doom I hear and it seems like with some polishing in performance (and maybe a bit of lo-fi grime in the production) these guys will be damn fun.

The video was not that bad. I really can’t fault them for wanting to get a video out there. I mean, consider the shit that was made when video cassette camcorders were new back in the 80’s. I’m sure there are tons of underground metal video’s by well respected bands that aren’t half as good as this one. We’ve been spoiled by better technology.

I wouldn’t have used a condo dining room as a set though. The dank garage would be just fine on its own.

  16. Strapping Young Lad says:

    god… this vid is 10 times scarier.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWr1NM-KNv4

  17. Ddon says:

All in all, they did what was intended. They garnered attention. In that respect the vid works. The music is cool, thats the main focus.

  18. myspace.com/GregKleinLegion says:

at exactly :46 the keyboard player looks as if he gets the joke! Im going to form a tribute band to these cats and call it :46 .fuck 420666 would be just the same in terms of aboriginality

  19. C. says:

“You’re probably wondering why he’s in Hell. Johnny liked little boys.”
