NEW SCAR SYMMETRY VIDEO: I HAD TO LOOK UP THE WORD “NOUMENON”
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at 10:30am by Axl RosenbergI’m not nearly as big a Death Jovi Scar Symmetry fan as the right honorable Mr. Neilstein, but I do really like them (especially 2006’s Pitch Black Progress), and I was curious to see how this new vocalists situation played itself out.
So I’m a little sad to say that while I haven’t heard the band’s new album, Dark Matter Dimensions, as of yet, this song, “Noumenon & Phenomenon,” doesn’t do much for me. And neither does the video. In fact, the most interesting thing about this whole experience, for me personally at least, has been learning what “noumenon” means. I feel much smarter now. Thank you, metal, for once again broadening my mind.
Dark Matter Dimensions is out now on Nuclear Blast. Vince says it’s good so feel free to call me an asshole for not loving this song. Maybe hearing the whole album will change my mind.

Man, I’ve studied the noumenon when I was at the high school and I’ve never really understood it: if you got it just reading of it from wiki, you’re a fucking genious. Fuck you Kant!!

Great song and decent video. The new album is a gem!
Dunno…. it’s a good song, but the growler looks like he’s trying to do the people’s eyebrow. Kinda ruins the atmosphere a bit…

Hm yeah, I’ve definitely known of the word noumenon for quite some time but now that you mention it, I’ve realised I never really knew what it meant.
And after looking it up on Wikipedia, I still don’t have a fucking clue.
Long story short, noumenon is what is, phenomenon is what’s observed.
It took me looking it up on Wikipedia 3 times to arrive at that explanation.
noumenon are “things-in-themselves”; objects unmediated by experience. phenomena are the appearances generated by noumena interacting with our senses. we know the world only through phenomena; the noumena remain “hidden” behind the appearances since the only way we can know the world is through our (sense) experience of it (which subsequently generates phenomena). Phenomena occupy the world which we can know, noumena are the “things” behind the pheomena.

Shitty video, halfways decent band. They’ve always been a bit cheesy in my opinion, but I guess that’s not a horrible thing. Dream Theater is cheesy and I still like them.
Pretty good, but I have to say that it isn’t the same without Alvestam
Decent new album, though its tough to listen to all the way through in one sitting. It gets really old quick. Oh… and I still like SOILWORK better.
I love Soilwork but their recent couple of albums (whilst still good) don’t even come close to Scar Symmetry in my opinion. With Peter Wichers back in the band I’m hoping the next one will be somewhat of a return to form though.
