I’D LIKE TO BUY A VOWEL, PAT
Thursday, October 8th, 2009 at 2:30pm by Axl RosenbergTime for another Readers’ Choice! HOO-RAY!
So. Reader Tim-o-tato e-mailed us about this band Yyrkoon. No, I have no clue how you pronounce that, either.
ANYWAY, here’s what Tim-o-tato has to say about them:
They have the same type of music basically as Gojira, same vocal ’style’, BUT they have guitar solos! haha And the biggest kicker, is
that they’re from FRANCE!!! haha They’re CD entitled “Occult Medicine” is a solid A- record. Really good stuff I think.
I listened to one song and wasn’t really into it. There are some superficial similarities to Gojira I guess, but Yyrkoon strike me as being considerably more generic. But don’t take my word for it. You can listen for yourself and let us know what you think by going here.

Heard these guys before. I like em.
Occult Medicine has to be one of my favorite albums. Absolutely top notch death/thrash.
Given that Yyrkoon are a straight up death metal band, i don’t know where he got the Gojira comparison from. Given the massive hard on you guys have for them, possibly just to get your attentions.
Well, Yyrkoon are pretty damn good btw. I’d recommend “Occult Medicine”.
Since ol Tim-tato recommended, I shall take a listen…
Yyrkoon is a character in Michael Moorcock’s “Elric” series. He’s Elric’s evil cousin.
I know I’m a nerd, so don’t bother pointing it out.
You aren’t alone, when I first saw the post I debated whether I should point out where the name came from or not. Great series tho, read it years ago in my younger days
Michael Moorcock?
Michael…more cock?
Kirk Hammett, Taylor Hanson, Eddie Vedder, and Rory Gallagher all together in one band? I’m in.
hah, not bad
yeah i found these guys on pandora awhile back… nothing special… i hit the skip button…
MAN those drums suck. I’m a pretty sucky drummer but I reckon I could do that!
I don’t hear any Gojira similarities. But you may want to rephrase your sentence. Since Yyrkoon were around before Gojira, it should be Gojira that bear the superficial similarities to Yyrkoon. While Yyrkoon aren’t my favorite band, I do like them and they’re about one million times better than Gojira.
I think it’s pronounced ‘Ear-koon’.
I downloaded their album, listened once… don’t remember too much about it. It was decent.
I have been a fan of Yyrkoon since discovering the Occult Medicine album. They don’t sound ANYTHING like Gojira, I have no idea where that statement came from. Yyrkoon is much more of a death/thrash metal band, but they are quite good.
I miss this band. “Occult Medicine” is a solid album, my favorite from these guys. “Unhealthy Opera” is great too, just not as much as the previous. But I swear, if you listen to “Dying Sun” and before, you would have sworn it was another band. Not that they’re bad, but I’m more into their later work.
I got my reference of Gojira from a similarity I hear in both the rhythm of the songs, and melodies the vocalist uses along side, and heavy guitar riffs. I dont know, maybe the full moon was out, but when I first heard this band on Pandora I was really blown away.
My favorite song is Surgical Distortion, which sounds more like Gojira to me, and ALSO which I could not find ANYWHERE but is off there Occult Medicine CD….
Thanks Axl for featuring it! Way more, than what I could have asked for :-)
It’s pronounced ‘year-coon’, and they fuckin own.
I’ve been listening to these guys since Occult Medicine came out. Anything before that is kinda shit, but their last 2 records shred face. Haven’t had a new album for almost 4 years now though…
Like all the others, I don’t hear the Gojira (and I love Gojira and really like Occult Medicine; Unhealthy Opera is alright). But I think that Occult Medicine is worth a purchase.
This band has nothing to do with Gojira seriously (p.s: i like both bands).
Their last 2 albums, “occult medecine” & “unealthy opera” are great. I saw them live before they call it quits, and they rocked !
Awesome band. Occult Medicine and Unhealthy Opera have awesome, memorable solos
