A DRUMMING LEGEND IN THE MAKING

Thursday, October 15th, 2009 at 1:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

So this is actually pretty interesting. This kid’s dad documented him learning to play the drums starting at age two, then made this little five minute video following his progress up to age eleven. By age five he’s already getting pretty good.

Kinda makes me wish someone had shoved a guitar in my hands at a much younger age. Did any of you, oh our dear readers, start playing an instrument at a really young age? Do tell.

So… who do we think would win a drum-off: this kid or Jonah Rocks?

Thanks to Ryan Black for the tip.

  • Jonah Rocks would definitely win. He plays with much more feeling. Plus, I have a feeling this kid will end up being a MAJOR doucher.

  • Damn, drumming AND singing! Kid just doubled his future pussy intake.

  • Paul Hurtt says:

Started withguitar at 17 wish to fuck id started earlier.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt says:

    what he said

  • i started playing guitar in 7th grade im now 20 but two buddies of mine started playing drums at 2 or 3 and one of thems dad was a drummer in a band i belive?

  • Zoker says:

At the age of 2 he was ready for a lot of bands kickin around nowadays…

  • chris says:

i started drums at 9, it ain’t 2 but its pretty young. fuck that’s 11 years ago. anyway, this kid ain’t got shit on what thomas pridgen was doing at his age. oh and speaking of which, why does this site fail to ever mention the greatest band ever, THE MARS VOLTA!!!!!!! most of the shit you put on this site is just that, shit. it’s the same fucking thing over and over again, the world of metal has been flooded with tons of generic bands with no originality. case and point, god forbid. how the fuck can you guys hype them up so much when they are doing the same thing that countless other metalcore bands are doing? it’s not even like they are a supremely talented band, they’re just meh. i mean come on, you guys are sponsoring a tour that features arch enemy, ARCH FUCKING ENEMY!!!! give me a break, they fucking blow. why don’t you guys look for metal bands with at least an ounce of originalty.

    • Ajax says:

      lol @ the Mars Volta

      • chris says:

what? you can’t appreciate something that isn’t “br00tal”, grow up, there’s more to the world of music than metal. trust me i love tons of metal bands, but at some point you gotta broaden your horizons. plus, the mars volta destroy anything ever created musically. thomas pridgen does faster kick drum work with one pedal than almost any metal drummer can do with a double.

        • Ajax says:

The Mars Volta sound like Queen except 30 years too late. If I wanted to listen to something that sounded like Queen, well I’d fucking listen to Queen.

        • Ajax says:

And you claim to say that this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJj4uORutwc is the best band ever? lol, kay…

          • chris says:

queen? are you fucking serious. TMV have more talent than queen could ever wish to have. cedric has the most amazing voice in music today. and what’s wrong with that video. i understand you must not be used to improv because metal bands can’t really expand their ideas that far. are you just talking shit because of their live show, which is amazing. i’ve seen ‘em 6 times and each was better than the last. i guess your feeble mind just can’t comprehend anything more than CHUG-CHUG-CHUG ROARRRRRRR!!!! gow up, expand your mind, find music that doesn’t have down tuned guitars. and yes The Mars Volta are the greatest band to ever walk the face of this planet.

        • jason says:

The Mars Volta is a great band and has been mentioned plenty on this site (although ATDI gets more run)…but, best band ever? C’mon man. The had a fantastic run with their initial EP and some killer albums. But since then, Cedric and Co. have started drinking their own hype Kool-Aid and devolved into a practically unlistenable, self indulgent noodle-fest

          • chris says:

ATDI was awesome shit, when i was a little skater kid in like 5th grade. not trying to say i don’t like ‘em cause they will always have a special place for me. have you heard the bedlam in goliath, that album is amazing. i’ll give you that octahedron is a little eh for TMV but it’s still a great album. plus with octahedron they were conciously (sp?) trying to strip their sound from the insane psychedelic freakouts of past albums. they’ll be back with the intensity on the next album.

          • jason says:

bedlam in goliath is exactly what I was talking about. It’s a fucking wank-fest. Don’t get me wrong, I loved everything they did up to and including FTM, but I think they got so much press about them being “geniuses” that they started to believe the hype. A buddy of mine put it best last time we saw them live…”It sounds like Omar just got a bunch of new guitar pedals and wanted to try them all out live.”

          • Ajax says:

Uhm..Well I think Mikael Ã…kerfeldt has the most amazing voice in music today because of just his overall range, but to each their own. I like how you’re actually sitting there trying to say these guys are more talented than Queen, though. In 20 years people will still remember Queen as rock pioneers. Not so much in your case with TMV. I don’t need someone to tell me to expand my mind because I listen to more than metal. I listen to Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Samuel Barber just as much as I listen to Opeth, Mastodon, Suffocation and Decapitated. You’re a raging tool to even make such a claim.

          • chris says:

Mikael is amazing, but he can’t even dream about touching the high end stuff cedric can. and Ajax, dude you like queen, instantly your opinion on music is null and void. queen is one of the most overrated bands i have ever heard, maybe with the exception of rush, god they fuckng blow. nice tchaikovsky name drop, hope that made you feel better. there are infinately better classical musicians who totally own tchaikovsky. stravinsky, wagner, and strauss to name a few.

oh and jason, omar is a genius

          • Ajax says:

Where did I mention me liking Queen? Copy/paste it for me. Because I didn’t. You came to that conclusion by making assumptions. And again, you show you ignorance and failure to understand the English language. I named A FEW classical composers meaning I enjoy classical music, you fucking retard. Comparing Mikael to the tool from TMV is like comparing apples to oranges. Except apples are ultimately better and Cedric’s orange is rotten.

            Fuck you.

          • rage says:

            And Ajax takes the prize.

    • Ryd1ZZ says:

This site has written a bunch of shit about TMV. You must be new here.

      • Ajax says:

Since MS writes about TMV I have to like them? So by that logic, I have to like WoP because MS writes about them, too, as well as everyone else they write about? So highly thought of are the opinions of a few bloggers.

I emailed them the entire album streaming link of Doomriders new CD and Vince’s response was “The record ended up being not as interesting as I’d hoped”. Who cares? It’s news in metal and have strong ties with Converge, who gets huge praise here as well. This being off topic but still kinda pertains to what is being said about stuff being written here.

        In short, blow me.

      • chris says:

not new, just don’t care to check the site out everyday, more like once a week, maybe every two weeks. i have yet to see anything about TMV though. doesn’t matter, most metalheads hate TMV because cedric actually knows how to sing.

    • I love boobs says:

and Chris proves that most TMV fanboys are complete douches. You are no better than the close minded metal fans that you protest. “IF YOU DONT LIKE TMV YOU FUCKING GO DIE”

      • chris says:

hahahaha i never said to go die because you don’t like TMV, but you don’t deserve to listen to them. bitch

        • Apropos says:

May I ask how you came to be such an expert on the psychology of metal heads? Every one of your comments speaks of how metal heads think, but all of it is nonsensical. You are stereotyping the metal genre’s listeners simply as a tool to facilitate your fanatic love of The Mars Volta. Its fine to love a band, I have nothing against your favorite band being TMV. Its extremely ignorant however, to start a tirade against seemingly every other band you can name off the top of your head. You are simply picking a fight with anonymous people on the internet, for no apparent reason.

          You sir, are a fool.

  • Slaughterhouse says:

Started way too late…I was like 19….I wish I would have started at 2…

  • Skanes says:

Started playing the guitar when I was 8, drums when I was 9, I’m 19 now. I was too young to understand that I was forming bad habits early, so they were harder to break when I was older.

  • Uglymicrowave says:

This is what they should be teaching kids in school…

Not the periodic table who gives a fuck….

this is why America is a bunch of idiots….because our school districts dont teach real life skills like how to balance a check book or get a job or change a tire….It’s done purposly

throw all kids in a music class with an instrument in kindergarten we’d have a much more productive country instead of being raped by money

  • cougar party says:

I hear people (who don’t play a musical instrument) say that all the time. You don’t need a guitar shoved in your hand at age 2 to become a good or great guitar player. You just need to practice. A lot. Saying that is just an excuse not to have to learn an instrument while still being able to say you always wanted to.

Seriously, this kid is great, but he’s an anomaly. Most kids don’t have the discipline to practice an instrument at such a young age. If you want to be proficient in an instrument, suck it up and practice!

  • Jon Lewis says:

    Started playing guitar at 11.

  • Brooklynite says:

It’s all about having a parent as a musician for starting that young.

But for anyone, if the instruments are in the house, and the kid’s got the slightest bit of talent, and the parents aren’t lazy fucks, the kid will learn to play.

    • Discipleofthewatch says:

Just leave the instruments all over the house and let the kids play with them, for sure! We have drums in the living room and many guitars for our kids to mess with, but no drumming before 8 am.

  • nairbs says:

I started playing guitar and being serious about it when i was 21. I’m 23 now haha, but it’s never too late for anything.

  • fantasyh says:

Started playing guitar at around 14 or 15, still not early enough.

  • jorbams says:

As a moderately talented drummer at the age of 28, this always impresses me. I remember watching videos of Tony Royster Jr. 10 years ago and feeling like a dick because, even then, I knew I’d never shred that hard. This kid and dudes like Tony are monuments to practice, practice, practice. Throughout my “career” such insanely important things like video games, comic books, and staring at stuff deemed themselves much more demanding of my very, very valuable time. I could have been learning ostinato-style drum soloing or playing paradiddles with my feet…but no, I got pretty good at Halo…So I broke even, right?

I see nothing but a bright future for this kid

    -if-

he distances himself from these god awful bands he’s playing in in these videos. I know he’s just a tween and doesn’t know any better but this seems to be an almost comical stereotype: the shred-prodigy using his/her powers of good for evil; horrible, bar-rock, nu-metal, and/or cover band evil. YouTube: “vadrum” ..that guy fucking shreds too, but, buried deep in his videos is footage of him tracking drums for his band and they are fucking worse than watching your dog you had growing up die of DoggyAIDS right in front of your eyes. It would be a shame for this kid to fall in with the wrong crowd, musically. Here’s to hoping he’s the next Marco Minnemann (sp? too lazy to look up….fucking Kraut) and not the next, i don’t know, whoever plays drums for 5 Finger Death Pooter.

    • Full Metal Jackoff says:

I have to agree about Vadrum. He is pretty much the perfect drummer, if you watch any of those Mario Bros., William Tell, or Barber of Seville videos. But that band he’s in fucking sucks!

  • Nikki says:

I started playing the piano at about the age of 8 and stopped at around 12 bc I didn’t really like it at the time. Picked up the guitar at 16, but Im trying to get back into the piano bc I now realise how beautiful that instrument really is.

  • MikeAdam says:

Started Guitar at 17 wish i would have started earlier its a shame i didn’t i have way more focus now that i do play an instrument im 18 and hoping to make something out of it

  • orbital says:

efff, I started playing violin in 2nd grade. 11 years of lessons, a few childrens symphonies…. I picked up guitar at 15 and had a hell of a head start with my violin theory.

  • cosk! says:

my dad started teaching me to play drums when i was 4 or 5. and now days i cant remember not knowing how to do it. I think its like learning a second language, you can do it later on, but the best results happen if you start in early childhood… Im gonna teach my kids how to play music as early as i can…

  • pigchop says:

Fuck you all. I began playing Guitar while still in the womb. That’s right, and I started a band in there. We recorded an album, got rich, got fucked up and, broke up…all before I was born!

Unfortunately there will be no reunion – it would kill my mother.

  • The Mars Volta..prog just got gay

  • and jacob armen was better at drumming

  • Peppar says:

Uhm, he must have such an hearing problem
