Yes, Bannon is pretentious, but most interesting people are pretentious. It’s more fun to read than “hurr, I love metal & beer & boobies,” which is how a lot of people in extreme music come off in interviews.

I think you’re confusing “thinking in circles”, with sammy asking questions that JB has already answered previously. He tends to expand out from the question, and get down to what’s really being said, rather than hopscotching around with trivial babble.

He neither seems high or pretentious, actually quite the opposite.

I remember back when they first released “Jane Doe”, I did an interview with Jacob here in Chicago for my college’s radio station, UIC RADIO. It was the first time I’d done an interview with someone of any notable stature and I was extremely nervous. I found Jacob to be an intelligent and genuinely nice person who had no problem answering my questions at length. Since then I’ve been a big fan and follower of these guys. He’s not at all pretentious, it’s just that the guy’s mind is going at about a million miles per hour. Trust me, if you approach him at a show, he’ll have no problem taking the time to talk (unless they’re on in 5 minutes, of course). I can’t wait to see CONVERGE tomorrow night at the ARAGON , along with DETHKLOK, MASTODON, and HIGH ON FIRE!!!!!

Good observation. Protective is probably the perfect adjective, now that you mention it. ( In the sense of being protective of the aesthetic they have cultivated for the band)

I swear he’s wearing a shirt of himself in this photo. This guy’s contribution to Converge, lyrics notwithstanding, are easily the least interesting element of the band. In a live context, they are to the point of distraction. I wish this band was instrumental.

true – i tried to get into no heroes when it first came out by listening alongside a lyrics sheet, then quickly gave up when i still couldnt understand bannon’s lyrics.

that being said… you almost don’t need them. the musicianship/fucking ENERGY makes them a great band, and axe to fall is their best album yet.

Converge are a very challenging listen. I see how every site and magazine worships them but i cant dig deep enough to find the songs I like. I cought em live On the Current Mastodon tour and couldnt get into it. It was just a fuck ton of sound. Eager to hear the song with Steve von till though.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Converge (btw, thanks MetalSucks for introducing them to me :D) but I can’t understand the lyrics, don’t wanna take the time to understand the lyrics, and don’t understand when he says he has a message to pass. IMO, all he’s saying (or all I hear) is FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK FUUUUUCK FUUCK FUUUUUUUUCK!

I thought Bannon would be more like post-rock/metal guys who say vocals are just another instrument, and it shouldn’t be higher in the mix than other instruments, etc. Personally, I listen to it the same way as post-metal, not trying to understand what he’s saying, just enjoying it.

When you dodge direct questions to elaborate on how you don’t agree because you think you are on some kind of higher plane of artistic development, is pretentious as far as I’m concerned.
