METALLICA ARE FRANCAIS POUR UNE NUIT
Monday, October 19th, 2009 at 12:01pm by Axl RosenbergI’m not convinced that any live DVD filmed after about 1992-ish will be particularly flattering to Metallica, but maybe I’m wrong. I haven’t seen them on the Death Magnetic tour – I haven’t seen them since 2006, actually – so maybe they’re killing it out there. Maybe James’ voice is 100% and Lars Ulrich took drum lessons. I dunno.
I guess I’ll find out November 23, when the band releases Francais Pour Une Nuit, a DVD documenting a French concert from this past July. But here’s the kicker: the DVD will only be available in retail stores in… France. Everyone else will have to order it from the band’s website. So, uh, yeah. Not sure what the benefits of doing that are – more profit into the band’s pocket, less shared with retailers, I guess – but there you have it.
You can watch a trailer for the DVD here (it’s not embeddable because Metallica don’t love their fans anymore). After the jump, get details of the various editions of the DVD, plus the complete track list.
The DVD will be available in the following formats:
- Deluxe Limited Edition Box with a DVD/”Death Magnetic” CD/T-Shirt/Laminated pass and lanyard/5 Exclusive Photos
- Standard DVD in digipack/1 DVD including 2 hours of the show, 37 minute interview of the band, 5 videos from the audience/16 page booklet

I go tto see them on the Death Magnetic tour, and they did a pretty good job. No drum lessons for Lars, but still an enjoyable show.
Plus, this might be worth a pickup for the sole reason of Dyer’s Eve live.
I saw them on the Death Magnetic Tour as well. I thought they sounded very tight. James singing still sucks (big surprise), but musically they kicked ass and we only had to sit through two Death Magnetic songs.
Us in Detroit must of been on the “sell Magnetic to them like crazy” bend of the tour, as we dealt with 6 songs off the album. I like the cd, but it was just turning into overkill by song #4
shit man. I think the main reason to see them (at least for me) is to see death magnetic material live. I’ve seen all the old stuff over and over. i want to hear the new stuff live.
It was the opposite for me. That was my first Metallica show so I was looking for the classics.
wtf sorry excuse for a dvd trailer was that? the video started playing, and then i got crap quality overlays of death magnetic tracks not in any form of sync to the video…i thought it was the freaking website streaming DM tracks so I looked for a way to turn it off. it was the trailer. *puke*
I’d rather tear my ball sack on rusty barbed wire than give them any of my money. Much less watch their debacle of a live show.
fyi dude, Iv’e seen em on this tour and they are better than ever. You should catch a show on the tour
I dont have 69 dollars to blow on a band with a drummer that I’m better than. They suck.
CARTER=LAME
I saw them last year (or two years ago) at a concert called Weenie Roast. They were actually really good. I had heard the rumors about their live performances and I know how James’ voice has changed, but they pulled it off. Great set and awesome sound.
…I just hope they play as well when I see them this December.
The DVD isn’t 0 region so it will only play in Europe more specifically France.
Either way I missed the show but I’ve been to the Nimes Arenas before and it truly is a remarkable place.
I’m hoping Muse get the Honor of playing there some day.
Get over your school girl hate for Metallica MS. You’re embrassing yourself.
“it’s not embeddable because Metallica don’t love their fans anymore” Hahaha. Man, thats a good one. Because they have always been all about the “fans”
Regardless of the band.. this is a great way to release and market a DVD in today’s market. Filmed in France… so it’ll appeal to their cheese eating fans and it saves them from trying to stock it in stores and market it all over… and collectors worldwide can order it off their website.. putting more money in the artists pocket.. It’s hard to remove the band (metallica) from this concept… do we really believe they “get” this new paradigm in how to market a band in the 21st century, or did they finally get some good marketing guys in their camp.. who knows.. Bands like the Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails and tons of others are doing this too.
Saw them at Reading last year and in London this year, and they are better than they were in 2003, but nothing close to the late 80s vintage.
Dyers Eve live is a let-down, as Lars doesn’t do the double-bass parts, leaving the song sounding unbalanced.
I agree. Dyer’s Eve minus double bass is a huge disappointment. According to metlists, they played that song live for the first time in 2004. Maybe Lars thought people would forget about it…….
They’ve sounded infinitely better on the death magnetic tour than they did on the st. anger tours. James Voice has definitely sounded alot stronger. And Lars definitely still has no fucking idea what he’s doing. but whatever.
I swear to fuck, if I hear the words “what don’t kill ya, make ya more strong” ever again someone will die, it may be a random passerby or someone I know but godfuckingdamn do I hate that.
i see that you are very emotional about that song. but don’t worry….what don’t kill ya make ya more strong!

This is relevant to my interests, as I am still a big Metallica fanboy and liked Death Magnetic.
I guess that makes two of us.

I saw a clip of “Blackened” and it was actually pretty good, especiallly James. Lars even dropped some pretty sweet 16th note bass rolls… for all of four bars.
That being said, I’ve heard a lot of rumours at the extent to which Metallica DVDs are overdubbed and autotuned and what-have-you, so it’s hard to tell how much is actually Metallica live and how much is studio magic after the fact.
P.S; the venue from this DVD is insane!
