BORIS’ NEW VIDEO REMINDS US ALL THAT JAPAN IS FUCKING WEIRD

Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 11:30am by Gary Suarez

I’m planning a trip to Japan next year, and like many Americans who travel to foreign lands I’ve been reading travel guidebooks so as to prepare for what promises to be an unforgettable vacation and possibly a life-altering experience. Naturally, while reading publications like Frommer’s Japan and Time Out: Tokyo, my choice of soundtrack has invariably included Japanese artists such as Guitar Wolf, Yoko Ono, and Boris. As I’ve stated earlier, the latter of these are releasing a trio of monthly seven-inch records for Southern Lord, the first of which came out in September. H.M.A. (Heavy Metal Addict) b/w Black Original, the second installment in the series, officially goes on sale next week in both physical and digital formats.

Above you’ll find the incredibly fucking weird video for “H.M.A.” Before you even ask: YES THIS IS THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR THIS SONG! Boris drummer Atsuo (aka fangsanalsatan) directed this thing–seriously! I’m not sure if this is meant to be some homage to 80s Japanese metal or to a specific band that I’m unaware of, but needless to say this video should not be viewed on psychotropic drugs.

Did I mention how fucking weird it is?

it’s not weird at all if you’ve seen their live show. the drummer so wishes he was in poison in 1986.

  2. Dillon says:

    Wasn’t you fired?

  3. groverXIII says:

That was fucking terrible. I’m assuming it was their aim for the music and video to not sync up at all, but those videos where someone dubbed over a live Creed performance were better. And I’m also assuming it was intentional that they ran out of footage and started reusing some at the end. But the song was crap, the video was crap, the vocals were crap.

No, I’m not a fan of Boris.

    • Nate says:

I second that motion. Boris is fail. You can tell they want to be like tool, what with the dissonant noises and weird vocal effects.

Thumbs up grover, you nailed my feelings exactly.

      • The Ghost of D. Boon says:

That comparison is so half-assed and off the mark that I had to read it twice to make sure you were saying what you were saying

        • Nate says:

Dude. How is it off the mark? Tool has trippy noises, and vocal distortion effects. They pretty much defined that noise.

You can tell they”re the kind of band that think they’re progressive or cool or interesting to sound like that.

And it wasn’t really a comparison. I didn’t say they SOUND like tool. I’m saying they FAILING at trying to sound like Tool.

      • defstro says:

Boris wants to be like Tool? What the fuck are you smoking?

      • groverXIII says:

Whoa, you’re agreeing with me? Now I’m wondering if you’re fucking with me. I don’t know about trying to be like Tool, but they’re definitely not something that interests me.

      • Shimbo says:

Boris has been around for awhile. They frequently change their sound from album to album, sometimes also during the course of the album. This one song sounds like no other from their very large discography so to say that they are trying to be like Tool is a very fail comparisonl. Don’t judge a band on the basis of one song.

    watch tokyo gore police

  5. Eric says:

That was strange, even for a Boris track. Pretty good, mind you, but weird.

  6. turboringtail says:

Man, i wish I had hair like Cloud from Final Fantasy VII…

  7. Needs more hellchild!

  8. loose nut says:

FYI: the video is a parody of Sex – Virgin Killer. Youtube it.

  9. FlyingDadBomb says:

At least you didn’t go into full detail about Visual Kei.

    • Corpse Pus says:

Nailed it. The documentary Global Metal has a detailed section on VK and how their fans can’t even name other famous metal acts – it is definitely its own thing…

  10. SP420 says:

Every time I hear or see this band in a video, I seriously wonder why Japan wasn’t completely nuked off the face of the earth so this wouldn’t have happened.

  11. As fun as it probably was to make this video, this isn’t really good.

    I like Boris, but… eh.

  12. chris says:

boris is good, i saw them at all tommorow’s parties with the flaming lips. they put on a good show.

  13. Zoker says:

Don’t go to Japan unless you wanna be raped in the ass by yellow freaks…

  14. vincent p says:

I’m going to Japan in April and I anticipate much weirdness and tomfoolery. I cannot wait. I’ll just blindly assume everything will look like this.

  15. Cisco says:

Japan sure is a pretty cool experience! I had the privelege to live there for four years! It was a very memorable time. Do attempt to climb Mt. Fuji if you’re there during the summer! If you do, stay overnight and climb to the top for the sunrise; will not regret it, I promise.

  16. big_metal_al says:

Boris is awesome, and that was some cwazy wok and wol!

  17. H2O says:

weird… I liked it! Though I REALLY need to get hold of Absolutego

  18. I says:

That sounded like shitty rock/techno from the early 90’s. Not really industrial, not really rock, not really good.

  19. Hairyman says:

That was a 5 and a half minute intro to a song that never happened. Absolute load of shit. If I wanna listen to Japanese bands I’ll stick Mad Capsules, Dir En Grey or Maximum the Hormone on.

  20. AntiqueHighHeelRedDollShoes says:

Lol, you think that was weird? You need to watch the movie “Detroit Metal City”

  21. Binkles says:

Now thats glam…eh, still better than 99% of whats in the top 200 on the american billboard charts. America cant exactly point fingers music wise with the horseshit we pump out and shove down everybodies throats

  22. Reaper-X says:

It’s just a parody of shitty Visual Kei bands that Wapanese kids in the US love so much.

    • Shimbo says:

Hehe, to be saying Wapanese means you have some knowledge of the Japanese sub-culture in America. Well, anyway, there are quite a number of good VK bands out there. Try listening to more than one of two songs from one band before judging.

But besides that interesting case of culture profiling, yeah, you’re right. It’s a parody of VK bands. But…no real VK bands actually look like that anymore. At all. If anything it might be a parody of X JAPAN.
