I was hoping someone else would think the same. I saw it at the Boston screening a month or so back, and for the most part found it as basic knowledge of any fan of black metal. It bothered me that the directors were two indie arts people, who approached the subject initially because of the shock factor, and wanted to bring it into mainstream culture. I'd say it's great for the surface level, or for anyone completely unfamiliar with the scene. I thought it was interesting that, for instance, for the Euronymous murder they neglected to mention he was stabbed 26 times.... All this criticism aside, I'd highly recommend seeing it, as Fenriz steals the documentary. He's truly a fascinating person, I could hear him talk for hours without getting bored... Agreed, 100%.

It's made by folks outside the black metal circle and definitely has the feel of an anthropological study and arthouse mood piece than a serious inquiry into why this music was made. It could have been a serious music itself for an audience of filmgoers that have no sense of why this music is important or interesting beyond the sensational early history. Admittedly there are some amazing and oft-times hilarious interviews with the dudes from Darkthrone, Immortal, Satyricon, Ulver etc, and of course the bits with Varg are pretty eye-opening. Fenriz and Frost emerge as two fascinating personalities. But this is a documentary, not an oral history, and it did a pretty piss-poor job of putting these personalities in their contexts. It says a lot that there is almost zero black metal in the whole doc. It's more minimalist ambient electronic soundscapes.
