What a great tour write-up! Thanks for making the time to do this. I felt like I was there (and I actually have been to a lot of those places — you capture the scenes really well). And yes, the weather in the south truly does suck. But there are compensations, as I think you discovered. Stay strong — you guys are awesome.

A few points of interest:

(1) *Deliverance* was a work of fiction set in GEORGIA, NOT ALABAMA. Did you really get THAT lost?

(2) The Bottle Tree is an awesome venue/bar/restaurant/club – a hidden gem in a run-down section of downtown BHM and I miss it dearly. Way better than Alan Hunter’s club/theater a few blocks down, and this is mostly because it’s far less pretentious. Hope you tried the shrimp and grits while you were there. I make better, but it’s not a bad thing to get broken in slow.

(3) Texas BBQ cannot beat Alabama BBQ, period. Seeing as you are Canadian and most likely a BBQ rube, I will forgive you for failing to appreciate that fact.

(4) Crap music is the biggest thing since, well, EVER, and I can’t see that ever changing. There is no merit system in the music business, and for that reason I still can’t figure out how genius acts like Mastodon and Tool made it big almost IN SPITE OF the crap-rises-to-the-top paradigm that continues to apply.

It really is sad that that wonderful cesspool of filth and decay, the Cobalt is being shut down. No, seriously, some awesome shows have taken place there over the years. FUCK THE OLYMPICS! I hope the building housing the Cobalt will implode…just as the tragic waste-of-money Olympic games begin.

Nice blog. Very comprehensive. It fucking sucks about the Cobalt: I’m one year too young to have seen any shows there this summer, and I was fucking looking forward to going back to Vancouver and seeing shows in that fearsome and storied venue (and no, I don’t flat iron my hair or listen to A Day to Remember).

My stepmom was actually leading the charge against those Sihota assholes who went about shutting it down. You might have heard of her: her name is Tanya and she runs the Skinny Mag. Anyways, I hope Wendy opens up a new place soon so I’ll be able to go to proper shows with my old man and fuck shit up.
