Whether they have been to Egypt or not doesnt really matter, because they are still amazing. People in America can write harmonies with harmonic minor scales, too. It’s not like Egypt has some brilliant secret to playing scales that the rest of the world can’t figure out.

I received an advance of this record from NBA and find that there’s something a little off with it compared to other Nile records. I like it – and appreciate the changes Sanders and company have tried to inject in their tried-and-true formula – but something strikes me as odd with this new album. It might have something to do with the production. I know Erik Rutan was involved with the recording; maybe his influence is it.

Whereas with previous Nile albums, I always imagined a layer of sand (yeah, stupid I know) grinding up some of the highs, this time around they’re very distinct and the instruments are quite clear. Right, somebody’s bitching about being able to hear all of the instruments on a death metal album. But, like I said, compared to the rest of Nile’s catalog, while it’s a good effort, I don’t rank this one near the top.

Very cool track, i kind of ignored nile because i didnt like the fact that they were american but had themed their music around egyptian culture, and to find out the dude hasnt even been to egypt?! But having listened to the track they actually sound pretty cool. Ill reconsider.

I remember buying decibel magazine right after ithyphallic came out, there he said that he had actually never been there, but he wanted to! Dont know/care if he has been recently :)

I think the new album is very good, at first listen I wasnt that impressed but it has really grown on me, I dig it.

Egypt’s metal is existent and doing well, all things considered. If you have yet to do so, read Heavy Metal Islam, a fantastic chronicle of how our peers are enjoying the music we love in disparate circumstances, be it political or cultural.

Last I checked, Egypt has an annual heavy metal festival. One of four nations on the African continent to feature one, along with Morocco, Namibia as well as South Africa. Good times.
