SUICIDE SILENCE GONNA END UP A BIG OLE PILE OF “THEM BONES”
Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 3:30pm by Axl RosenbergA tweet from Suicide Silence has just alerted me to the fact that the band recorded a cover of Alice in Chains’ classic “Them Bones” as an iTunes-only bonus track for their latest offering, No Time to Bleed.
Let me tell you what I like about this:
- Alice in Chains are not the band you’d guess Suicide Silence would cover.
- It forces Suicide Silence to do a real guitar solo.
- Suicide Silence truly made the song their own, and didn’t just do a version so faithful to the original as to render covering the song a pointless excercise.
Now let me tell what I don’t like about this:
- The way it actually came out.
Sorry. Maybe I’m just being a cranky old man, but holy crap, did this song not need deathcore vocals. And I say that as someone who actually likes Suicide Silence.
Anyways, here’s the song. I look forward to the bitchfest that will inevitably take place in our comments section.

Ugh. I’m not a Suicide Silence or deathcore fan whatsoever, and this definitely put another nail in the coffin on that for me. Crappy breakdowns and a “we couldn’t quite play Cantrell so here’s our effort” solo don’t do the original justice. The idea was good. It was creative, and it was an unexpected cover. I’ll give it that. But seriously, they can’t match the vocal harmonies or the music, and they probably should’ve just left it alone. It’s just making me like deathcore less and less…
it’s not like that solo is ridiculously hard. just goes to show when you’re raised on detuning and korn is one of your main influences, you can only get so much better.

I actually don’t mind it. much better than just trying to do a cover that sounds just like the original. I like when bands take a song and do it in their own style.

I remember the first time I heard their cover of Jailbreak. I LOL’d for weeks. Not saying I didn’t like it, cuz I did, but just the way Barnes’s vocals come in …. ‘TONIGHT THERE’S GONNA BE A JAILBREAK’ … still makes me laugh.
As for this specific cover, hmmm. I put Suicide Silence in the ‘guilty pleasure’ category, and I’m glad they didn’t ironically cover some Britney Spears song, but I can’t really say I like this. Something of the original needs to remain (besides the lyrics), and it’s just not there for this one. If I’d have just heard it on a radio somewhere, I wouldn’t have known it was an AIC cover.
Six feet under does rock. Nothing like blasting down the highway at 100+ mph blasting SFU’s Highway to hell full blast.

actually, i just went to youtube to see what was up with that and i have to agree that grave butchered “them bones” even worse than these guys, if that’s somehow possible. hostility also does an atrocious cover of this fucking song, but at least they have the good sense to inject some melody into their shitty cover. if the internet is to be believed, the best cover of this song by a “real” band is by seether. how’s that for fucking funny?

Fuck that. Grave’s cover is pretty damn cool, and in their hands it actually makes a decent death metal song. Problem is, for AIC it isn’t really one of their better songs anyway, so any cover is going to be decent at best.
this just might introduce a generation of tight jean / black hair dyed windowlicking scene kids to AIC….

I honestly don’t believe that they couldn’t have heard this after it was done and thought to themselves that is was good. I guess that’s why it’s a bonus, but it just comes off as disrespectful. Couldn’t they have covered something more in their range, like a Suffocations song or a Cryptopsy song? That could have been cool.
This band is so far from Suffocation or Cryptopsy. There is no comparison. Like saying a Siberian tiger is similar to a duck-billed platypus.

Wow, that was atrocious. I was literally grimacing through the whole thing. The only thing halfway redeemable was the solo section.

They took a meh song and turned it into a giant pile of suck.
Not even trying to be a dick about it, cause I thought it was gunna be cool, but about 20 seconds in I forgot I was listening to it. Then I was confused about why deathcore was playing when I have roughly 5 deathcore albums in my collection….then I realized I what I was listening to again.
Therefore, my only opinion is that it sounds like a Suicide Silence song. Which isn’t a plus. I don’t instantly despise all deathcore, but really, when you can make a cover sound like every other song you’ve written, that might be a sign you need to mix things up a bit.
Yeah this is a joke. Besides, alice in chains songs are generally quite easy to play, adding to their charm.
What’s a lot less funny is the fact that Suicide Silence, for all the wannabe-ism, have made a song all light and fluffy like a New Improved Cheer commercial compared to the darkness conveyed by the original Alice in Chains.
Sad but true.

I like Suicide Silence, but this cover is really really bad. I’m glad they put an original spin on it, but they overdid that sooooo much. I still think Korn covering Brick in the Wall Pts. 1, 2, and 3 is worse, but this one definitely sucks.

Suicide Silence completely butchered it. The solo was the only thing recognisable, the rest sounded like a regular crappy SS song.
I recognize all bands do have to work hard and put some degree of effort into their music to get somewhere. While I may say a band isn’t for me, this is the first time I have ever been forced to say this about a band.

You know… I actually liked it. Kind of overdone, but definitely more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Especially since the only decent part of the original song was the guitar; the rest sounds like a melodramatic 13-year-old girl whining.
