THIS IS IT, HEAVY METAL FANS! THE BIG DAY HAS FINALLY COME! GET EXCITED! WOO!

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 11:30am by Gary Suarez

Yes, my fellow connoisseurs of all things heavy, today is the day you’ve been waiting for: NIRVANA DAY! As you all well know, November 3rd sees the release of several Nirvana and Nirvana-related releases. For those of you who haven’t already created your NIRVANA DAY CHECKLIST, here’s a handy cheat sheet of the day’s releases:

  1. The “Deluxe” reissue of Bleach, Nirvana’s 1989 debut for Sub Pop, featuring a previously unreleased 1990 concert from Portland, Oregon (CD / Vinyl formats)
  2. Nirvana: Live At Reading, an official edition of the oft-bootlegged audio/video recording of the band’s classic performance at the 1992 Reading Festival (CD / DVD formats)
  3. The first, of what will likely be many, anthologies of the Greatest Hits of former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters (CD / Vinyl formats)
  4. A curious collection of previously unavailable and presumed discarded “death metal” demos entitled Nirvana 2002: Recordings 89-91, arguably for collectors only (CD format)

Oh, and I think that Slayer band has a new one out today too.

    Dammint I’ve been trolled!

  2. David Hulsey says:

I have an old copy of Bleach amongst my collection. I remember the spelling of Cobain’s name being like “Curt Kobain” or something. I really don’t care for it but it is better than the releases after. That guy really couldn’t play a guitar to save his fucking life. Actually…I guess it didn’t.

  3. groverXIII says:

I recognize Nirvana’s impact on music, and thank them both for helping kill hair metal and for making Dave Grohl a household name, but I really got sick of hearing them on the radio, and they still get overplayed. And let’s be honest… if Kurt Cobain hadn’t gone for the Hemingway Solution, Nirvana wouldn’t be nearly as big as they are today.

    • cookie says:

      so wrong.

    • David Hulsey says:

I don’t know man…they were obnoxiously huge around my 8th grade year or so…just before he did the deed. Or El Duce did the deed. Whichever.

      • groverXIII says:

Yeah, but if Cobain were still alive today, Nirvana likely would have sold out or their music would have declined, and eventually they’d be doing a shitty reunion tour like Creed and Limp Bizkit. Dave Grohl probably wouldn’t have formed Foo Fighters (okay, don’t really care as much about that part) and wouldn’t have had the money to pursue other more worthwhile musical projects like Probot or QOTSA.

        • I am James? says:

Dude Nirvana broke up a week previous to Kurt’s death, And the tracks Big Me and another one i cant remember were written by Dave and Krist in the last Nirvana recording. Also Guns N Roses are still as important as they were 20 years ago on the impact of music. So one would agure that the same would be for Nirvana.

        • cookie says:

How would your alternative future change the music they made before he died? Most bands eventually decline at some point, but it doesn’t change the music that was made the past that was good.

    • CrapMcPoopin says:

The Hemingway Solution would be a great punk band name.

  4. I'm not racist, but I hate Oceano says:

    Oh Gary Suarez, you nut.

  5. ryan says:

    hahaha, loving the ironies here.

  6. metalguy says:

That concert is plkaying on Fuse for anyone who cares

    • DustintheWind says:

Yeah i saw it last night… Im not as big of a fan as i was when i was in 6th grade when they were huge but i still thought it was really good, like gave me goosebumps good when they played “Aneurism” *i know i spelled that wrong

  7. how ironic, i actually will probably buy this. i already have the new slayer CD. in fact i probably have 3 or 4 of them. because it’s the same shit over and over and over and over and over.

  8. Facebook User says:

I’m definitely picking up the Reading DVD.

  9. David says:

I remember the day Nevermind came out. I was at Rainbow records during lunch break at the JC. It was a Tuesday, late September 1990, and I had a copy of Fugazi’s Repeater cd already in my hands. The store dude put something new on, and I first heard that now-classic jangly intro. “Who’s this” I asked, “REM?” “Naw, man, it’s the new Nirvana. Just came out today. If you buy a copy, you get this free sticker.” “Sold!” I said, brought ‘em home to my apartment and listened to that thing damn near every day for almost 3 months before the ‘Teen Spirit’ video came out on MTV and they became huge. The sticker ended up on a car I abandoned on the road a few months later. I still listen to Repeater more, but I’ll never forget that fall I had with Nevermind all to myself before it broke.

    • Kuranes says:

      It was ‘91.

My friend and I had gone to Florida over Canadian Thanksgiving. We stayed up to watch Headbanger’s Ball (which we didn’t get in Canada) and the last song of the show was Smells Like Teen Spirit. I went to a record store the next day (this would be a few weeks after the album’s release) and I asked the clerk if they had it. He hadn’t heard of it, but it turns out it was on their shelf.

For people who aren’t as old as I am, which I assume is most of the people on this site, that album was a Big Deal. It would have remained a Big Deal even if he hadn’t shot himself.

  10. I’m like a little school girl.

  11. Slaughterhouse says:

Nirvana is great is you want to de-learn the guitar……shittiest tone ever…I will give him cred on the melodies…but worst playing and tone ever……ever…..did I mention ever???

  12. boodtasteslikeshit says:

Fuck Nirvana… bring back the big hair and leather pants!

  13. Tom says:

Kudos to the mighty MS crue for the checklist. Excited as fuck to get the Reading DVD, the trailer for it captures the essence of the band quite well. TOTAL FUCKING NIRVANA!

  14. SHOCKTROOP says:

Nirvana is the single most overrated band of all time. bar none.

    • gnarlk says:

nope, that honour goes to GnR bar none…

    • Business Casual says:

The ignorance on display here is stupifying. Not everything has to be 180 bpm, bone-crushingly heavy, or “unrelenting” to be worthwhile. Nirvana is not my favorite band, but I challenge you to listen to their entire catalogue a few times through and not fully realize their song-writing genius. I’m glad to know that I remain among the knowledgable when it comes to music taste. You can have your Lamb of God.

      • SHOCKTROOP says:

you know what comes to my mind when I listen to Nirvana albums? It makes me realize they are a half assed Alice In chains . then I pop in facelift or dirt and I’m happy again.

in fact, Nirvana is the worst of all big 90’s seattle grunge bands. I’d take soundgarden, STP, Alice in chains. and many others over Nirvana any day of the week.

Foo fighters are better than Nirvana too.

        • gnarlk says:

the fact that you’d even mention STP means you should be shot into the sun. derivative poser bullshit. all the bands you listed aren’t even fit to sniff the melvins shit anyhow….

          • Gary Suarez says:

The best thing about this reissue is that we finally have confirmation on which tracks Dale Crover played drums. “Floyd The Barber”, “Paper Cuts”, and “Downer”.

  15. AK47 says:

Dammit why are yo still here??? I thought they fired you

  16. TXHellbilly says:

Whats big, red, and has more brains than Kurt Cobain? The wall behind him

  17. NoCowNoFood says:

Ill say that they were able to take The Pixies mixed with the depression feeling to Mainstream

  18. Cavorka says:

Ugh…glad grunge is as dead as that Cobain guy, his music was BOOOOORING!!

  19. THRASHETTE says:

Wait, who is this Slayer you speak of?

  20. Discipleofthewatch says:

    Excuse me? Nirvana?

Never liked Nirvana, not even in the nineties. My brother and I used to make fun of Smells Like Teen Spirit; they played it on mtv constantly back then.

Never liked U2, Radiohead, any of that crap either.

  21. Biff Tannen says:

Hey, Suarez- You are a fucking moron. “Nirvana 2002″ is NOT, I repeat NOT the same Nirvana. They WERE a death metal band from Sweden, featuring a member of ENTOMBED. You are a complete joke of a ‘journalist’, and a metal fan….no wonder you write for such a toilet of a website. Jack ass.

    http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=11058

    Fucking asshole.

    • Cavorka says:

I think what GS meant to say was that there are all these ‘Nirvana’ related stuff being released today, Dave Grohl was a former drummer, and this death metal band is mentioned because it has the same name…amirite?

Oh and another thing: I also hate GNR, they’re slightly more annoying than Nirvana(blegh) because their frontman is still more or less alive…

      • Biff Tannen says:

Nice try buddy….you CLEARLY thought it was the same Nirvana, as evidence by your “presumably discarded” tidbit. …also, your enclusion of the word ‘curious’, implying “Nirvana used to play death metal??!! ”

you FAIL at metal. Please turn in all your records… oops, I mean mp3’s.

        • gnarlk says:

          you’re a knob tannen…

        • Cod Metal King says:

It’s called ‘irony’ you twat. But then again it’s obviously lost on you so this post is null and void.

          • Biff Tannen says:

Nope…there was no irony in his article. Simply epic fail on his half, and a half assed cover up. Look at the words “.A curious collection of previously unavailable and presumed discarded “death metal” demos entitled Nirvana 2002: Recordings 89-91, arguably for collectors only (CD format) ”

The guy CLEARY thought it was the same band. Why the hell would he put “Death metal” in quotes ??? and he won’t even admit his mistake !

  22. GraZmus says:

    Screw Nirvana… they suck majorly

  23. niggaplease says:
