KITTIE VERSUS LAMB (OF GOD)

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 12:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

So this is pretty ri-goddamn-diculous.

Reader Justin Omidian just brought to our attention that the Kittie song “My Plague,” from their most recent release, In the Black, is a blatant rip-off of Lamb of God’s “Laid to Rest.”

Seriously. As Vince noted, it’s totally egregious. I can’t believe Kittie ever thought they’d get away with this – in fact, I think the only reason it hasn’t made headlines ’til now is because no Lamb of God fans actually like Kittie.

Check it out. Here’s Kittie’s “My Plague”…

…and on the off-chance you’ve never heard it, here’s Lamb of God’s “Laid to Rest.”

I look forward to LoG’s inevitable lawsuit.

    both bands suck

  2. unvme says:

lamb of god has laid down a lot of the brick on this road of metal we walk on, kittie is obviously “inspired” by them.. but this is thievery, cant anyone write original music anymore?

  3. geraldford says:

    meh

  4. Vikingfromhell890 says:

And did you know that Laid to Rest is a rip off of the intro riff to Into the Pit by Testament?

  5. Slaughterhouse says:

    Wow…that’s fucking heinous

  6. earthsherm says:

im not at all prejudice to women, but i can’t think of any other all female band making music this good,

  7. Tanner says:

    Those Kitties should be dropkicked

    • Johnny Death says:

No they shouldn’t. These kitties already survived being tossed off a bridge into a river because someone forgot to tie the bag! Isn’t that punishment enough?

  8. The Ogre says:

Who cares, its about 10 sec. A lawsuit won’t do shit. Also have to agree it sounds like Into The Pit too.

  9. Facebook User says:

does kittie think that just because they’ve been in the “spotlight” longer, that they can just rip off lamb of god?
lmao, like, they’re on tour with metallica, dont fuck with lamb of god.

but im sure they’ll pick up a few more fans just because people are ignorant

  10. kevkevbangbang123 says:

it’s not like that is the most original riff…im sure there are about 800 bands out there with the same riff in one of there songs.

    kittie is brutal, though.

  11. cougar party says:

If Satriani couldn’t win the lawsuit against Coldplay, I don’t see Kittie in any real danger of litigation. That being said, it is a pretty egregious rip-off

  12. Kevin M says:

Considering Kittie has never been relevant, I don’t really care who they rip off.

  13. hibernum says:

I see Vikingfromhell beat me to the obvious Testament riff. Quick, someone call Chuck Billy!

  14. Early Cuyler says:

Talentless hacks stealing from talentless hacks. Nothing to see here folks.

  15. Nate says:

Why even dignify kittie with a response? They’re not attractive enough to give a shit about.

  16. Jim Cherry says:

kittie (who suck) ripped off lamb of god (who suck) who ripped off testament (who WAS awsome)
maybe testament should sue both of these bands!

  17. Nate L. says:

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh pretty good song, but aside from the main riff, the thing that really tipped me off was the drumming, which sounded way too much like a cheap ripoff of chris addler…

  18. Jake Lentz says:

“Riffs” get ripped off daily. If every band who “ripped off” another band in one way or another were sued, we’d be left with about 10% of the good metal we have today.

But yeah, this is a little over the top.

  19. builtforsin says:

I’d fuck all 4 of those pussies!

    …see what I did there?

  20. Sean Pulatie says:

    a) I like both bands. Lamb of God fucking kills, and Kittie, while not being anything jaw-dropping, is a pretty kickass band.

    b) Sure, the riffs are similar. Big fucking deal. You can make the exact same argument about 900,000 more times between just as many bands. If it’s not a note-for-note ripoff (like that Vanilla Ice/Queen thing), then you really don’t have anything to go on. Kittie is probably heavily influenced by LoG, as are hundreds of other metal bands. There’s nothing wrong with that.

  21. timmah says:

Kittie always has, and always will, suck.

This is hilarious, caused my jaw to drop on the opening riff.

  22. Price says:

Sounds more like “Laid to Rest” than LOG does.

  23. SHOCKTROOP says:

wow. Usually i dismiss these song rip off things and stupid. lots of songs sound alike. but this is brutal. this is a complete rip off. vanilla ice thinks this is a rip off.

not to mention, my plague is already the name of a well known slipknot song. so they were unoriginal twice here.

  24. hobo7088 says:

a correction to your post, sir:
“the only reason it hasn’t made headlines ’til now is because nobody likes Kittie”

  25. El Peras says:

But then again, the very beginning of Lamb of God’s “in your own words” reminds me (a bit) of Metallica’s “Blackened”…..dunno…as a friend once said, “all sclaes and notes combinations have been played already”

  26. TheMarsPelicanInIsisChains says:

INTO THE PIT!!! Seriously, Testament pretty much wrote both of these riffs.

  27. fasshole says:

I dont really mind when riffs get re-used as long as the song is different, Testament re-used basically the same riff from into the pit in souls of black, but two completly awsome songs by themselves.

  28. wtfhax says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WMyRS4Vs0g

Testament Uber Alles, especially this Lamb of God/Kittie bullshit.

  29. Dru Morrison says:

Same picking pattern, not the same riff. But they both suck, so…

  30. it’s not the same. it reminds me of a soundalike you’d hear on a tv show or something though.

  31. Facebook User says:

That’s not Laid to Rest. That is INTO THE PITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!! One big fail for you Metalsucks.

  32. Zoker says:

A huge spontaneous laugh at these bands… or are we supposed to cry for their disgrace?

  33. pigchop says:

Another ‘interesting’ comparison is the opening track from World Painted blood and Metallica’s All Nightmare long.

  34. Rik Powell says:

Yeah, this news post has to be a joke, right? Everyone knows Laid To Rest is a rip-off of Into The Pit.

  35. tom cash says:

You know what was a ripoff that no one flipped out about (even though it was like 5 years ago) ? When hoobastank took the whole two step part of new noise by refused. That was a blatant rip off. I think the hooba song was “crawling in the dark” or something like that. A kid in a band that I was playing with at the time pointed it out to me… Except I had new noise on and he was like “yo they stole this from hoobastank.” Our band broke up shortly thereafter.

Randy Blythe is the Sam Jackson of metal. The only time he’s interesting is when he says motherfucker.

    • RayRay says:

lol. I literally started laughing out loud. Granted I really love Randy and LOG I see your point.

    • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt says:

Wrong, Epic Boooooooo. Samuel L Jackson’s image pops up in the dictionary when you research badazz mofo.

      Damn right thats my wiener………

  36. Noel says:

LAMB OF GOD TOOK THAT RIFF FROM TESAMENT, A SONG CALLED INTO THE PIT. CHECK OUT THE VIDEO. SAAAME RIFF.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBfDATi07I8

    in yo face, metalsucks.

  37. bob fossil says:

I think Chuck Billy & co. would have dibs on that riff!

  38. Bob says:

Don’t worry…every band is still ripping off Black Sabbath.

  39. cosk says:

    LOG > kittie

honestly i think it would be funny if LOG sued kitty, then testament comes out and just starts kicking asses….. ozzy comes out and says something about everybody ripping off black sabbath, everyone looks up and tells him to gtfo the courtroom…

  40. blah says:

LOG’s rips off testament more than kittie’s does LOG

  41. SonOF says:

Wow, I didn’t know Kitte were still around, but after 10 seconds of their song, I could tell how blatant a rip-off of LOG it is. Just pathetic, ladies…I hope you get sued.

  42. You know what I’m fucking pissed about?!?! That fucking Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” ripped off Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europa Express”, thereby laying the grounds for much of the hip-hop music we hear today!!! HOW DARE YOU, AFRIKA!!!!

  43. Ziltoid says:

    Really now? Really? REALLY?

Yes, both riffs sound way too similar, but LoG obviously didn’t come up with it. The earliest version I can think of is Into the Pit as already stated, but metalcore seems to enjoy ripping off melodeath riffs more, so I’m going to call it a direct ripoff of At the Gates, even though AtG was most likely inspired by that Testament riff.

    Regardless, both songs are awful.

  44. SonOF says:

Jesus, after reading all of this shit, I can’t believe how many supposed metal fans hate Lamb of God.

I reallly, really don’t get it. Someone please help me out, fill me in.

These guys are all about metal, they paid their dues, came up in the metal/hardcore scene, played shitty little shows with everyone and anyone in metal and hardcore for years…gained popularity/ a huge fanbase the RIGHT way, by touring everywhere, playing with diverse bands on various tours/festivals, working their asses off, being awesome to their fans, playing kickass sets each and every night. They headlined tours, and also played with under iconic headlining acts like Slayer (even though their set was, by this point, twice as exciting as the tired old bands they idolized and were playing under). Their music is, in ways, a throwback, groove oriented metal ala Pantera, that really has something for every heavy music lover. It’s, as I said, groove-heavy, but has elements of thrash and hardcore, it’s not so technical that it becomes a boring instrumental wank-fest, but by no means simple (some parts are still technical enough for musicians and tech-nerds to get off on, especially Adler’s drumming). The band never had a drastic change in their sound, so the “sell-out” shit doesn’t apply to them.

So what, seriously, is the problem with L.O.G? Are you just tired of them? Is it jealousy? Annoyed at how big they became (you know how those elitists hate it when more than 50 people like “their” band), how many records they sell? Annoyed that their t-shirts sell at Hot Topic, and probably Bob’s Store? Is the band too derivative; too much like Pantera or Testament? Are you annoyed because all of their fans are teenagers, or “morons” or “drunks” or some other generalization?

Someone please fill me in. I didn’t get the memo, apparently titled, “Lamb of God Sucks For the Following Reasons,” I’m really behind the curve on this one, and I’m feeling rather silly. Thanks in advance.

    • Sean Pulatie says:

This is exactly why I fucking love LOG. They’re a fantastic metal band. The drumming is just SICK, the guitar/bass work is unparalleled, and Randy’s vocals are the best in metal today.

I think the best way to explain the hatred is this: It’s a sign of the times. Lamb of God has been around for about a decade, and for today’s average music fan, that’s just too damn long. We live in such an “instant” world right now. Everything’s got to be done this second. Hell, even I get impatient when my internet takes longer than 10 seconds to load. We also see our music the same way. This is why bands are lasting shorter and shorter, and why I dig bands like LOG. They’re able to withstand all that and still have a fantastic metal career.

Let the haters hate. These guys are simply fucking amazing, and if you can’t see that, then I feel sorry for you.

    • SourDeez says:

      ^ this

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and listened to Lamb of God, because I don’t really dig their last two albums and I pretty much overdosed on their first four, but I have nothing but the utmost respect for them. Their live show is fucking incredible, and they really embody modern metal. They’re also great musicians. I always find it hilarious how many Lamb of God haters couldn’t even begin to play a single song of theirs. It’s the same shit that Mastodon gets: “They’re popular, so they suck”. I’ve mentioned here before how some people find it impossible to fathom that someone could be into Mastodon and Lamb of God…I guess I’ll throw Pantera in there too…yet also be equally into shit like Ayreon, Demilich, and Gorguts. Some people are just fucking retarded, I think that’s the answer to your question.

    • Thriceloststory says:

I do love the fact that no one today can understand the concept of “to each his own” and feel the need to stoop to the level of flaming.

      How does it go again?
      “So drunk on yourself, self-righteous…”
      Yeah, I think that’s it.

    • Zee says:

What SonOF said, I don’t get the hate either. Sure they’re not exactly paragon of avantgarde, but they do their stuff very well – Blythe’s vocals are rare example of harsh voice that doesn’t sound like some forced “my throat hurts” crap and band’s very tight in general. They don’t use sugary melo-death harmonies, don’t rip off Killswitch Engage etc. and do other stuff that’s usually despised as not being tr00 enough. All in all they look like a perfectly ok thrash band for me.

  45. rachel says:

Any metal band can make the 9th of this scale pattern flat and play a riff in 6/8. I have heard LoG use harmonic minor scale patterns, just like alot of metal bands. 6/8 makes a good groove for a riff, therefore similar sounding riffs are bound to occur.

  46. Cavorka says:

Big deal! Both bands are mediocre to sucky, and I remember a certain Papa Roach ripping off Iron Maiden’s Ghengis Khan riff(Last Resort)

    • SourDeez says:

Hahaha yeah! Now THAT is a blatant ripoff. Probably the most blatant ripoff in the history of blatant ripoffs. It’s literally the exact same riff, it’s not even slightly varied.

      • Thriceloststory says:

        “Ice Ice Baby…”
“I thought we were singing Under Pressure…”
        “Who sing’s that?”
        “…gtfo…”

  47. Felipe Abreu says:

and LoG stole some riffs from Testament

    so fuck that

  48. Jizzmaster3000 says:

It’s nowhere near as blatent as when Atreyu ripped off the In Flames song, ‘The Hive’, for their song ‘Right Side Of The Bed’. They seemed to get away with it without a lawsuit.

  49. LEGIONS: iron and steel says:

Testament stole that riff from a band called Ulysses Siren.

  50. Scott Rives says:

Sheesh.. It’s just a generic metal riff… It also sounds just like a Slayer riff that I can’t put my finger on or be bothered to look up. Do all you guys listen to as much metal as you do and seriously not realize that you hear the same shit over and over? Good thing you’re not drawing comparisons on punk riffs…

  51. Gospel of Madness says:

Bands who rip off bands who rip off bands that rip off bands.

  52. SourDeez says:

Time to bring back “metal that sounds like other metal”. There are a ridiculous amount of riffs that are similar to each other, but not EXACT rip-offs. This is one of them. Obviously Testament’s “Into The Pit” inspired LoG, who still made a pretty original riff out of it, and then Kittie dumbed down the LoG version. It’s really the guitar tone in the Kittie song that’s a carbon copy. But people share ideas in all genres of music. I play jazz trumpet, and it’s insane how many variations you’ll find on one idea in jazz…just like in metal.

  53. DJ says:

This is why you don’t display a link to the comments before people click through to the post. You get a bunch of asshats posting the same shit over…

LAMB OF GOD STOLE THAT FROM TESTAMENT

  54. BTK666 says:

What did you expect from a bunch of chicks?

  55. Reaper-X says:

So they got so sick of being the most boring band on the planet. (I had never yawned at a concert so much in my life.)

So sick that they decided to steal riffs. Goddamn, next thing you know, Otep will do deathcore and Hed(pe) will tell everyone they do Thrash Metal.

and they don’t have Trish Doan anymore, so theres absolutely no reason to stare at this trainwreck.

Like anyone really wants to go see a Manjaw that can’t play drums and a future Hockey Mom bust out below average vocals. The other two are just hired lameasses.

  56. Alex P. says:

Lamb of God have always bored me a little, as has every metalcore band that wasn’t Prayer for Cleansing, God Forbid, Straight Reads the Line(who are borderline) or Between the Buried and Me (and I don’t consider Mastodon or Protest the Hero strict metalcore). While I can listen to them, and can appreciate the technicality, the riffs just start to blend after a while. They don’t suck, but don’t deserve the hype lavished upon them.

OK I’m done caring about this. NEXT STORY!

  57. Alex P. says:

Actually, I’m not done caring. A band I like, Death (you may have heard of them), pretty much rip off Iron Maiden’s The Phantom of the Opera (a song you might have heard) for one riff at the end of Flattening of Emotions (off of Human, which, as you might know, a few people liked), so there are ways to work a ripped riff into a song well (it then becomes a tribute). A note by note is inexcusable, though.

I hope I wasn’t TOO underground for you guys!

    • I says:

Death is fucking awesome. You can hear ‘Symbolic’ in just about every ‘metalcore’ and out there today. It’s one of the most influential albums in metal that most people don’t know about(even though I have no idea how that works).

As for this whole ‘Kittie ripped off LoG who ripped off Testament’ bullshit can come back around to that whole 4 chord chord progression argument. I’ve done it plenty. I’ll start to write a song that I’m really digging, then throw in a CD of a band I haven’t listened to in a while, and I’ll be damned if what I came up with isn’t somewhat similar to a song on that CD. That why it’s called an INFLUENCE. Granted they probably could have changed the tone of the guitar, or changed the tempo of the song a bit, but they probably didn’t give a shit because they knew it wasn’t the same song or even thought about Laid to Rest. It happens.

There’s even a song on the last good Mudvayne album that sounds like that shitty Hoobastank band. It’s out there more than anyone realizes.

    • SourDeez says:

Shit, I never noticed the similarity between Flattening of Emotions and Phantom…I wouldn’t call it anything close to a ripoff, but there is definitely a similarity there. Good ear.

  58. Beereded says:

Can’t remember what song it is, it’s off of New American Gospel. But, at the end of it is the same exact riff from the beginning of Future Breed Machine from Meshuggah. Just one of the many riffs I’ve noticed Lamb of God stole. So, as far as I see it, what goes around comes around.

  59. a little adorable kitty says:

you guys are hurting my feelings :(

  60. amusicalweapon says:

Sorry to tell you guys but every body rips everybody off in metal. Thats the truth.

  61. amusicalweapon says:

And on that note I seriously doubt LoG is going to sue Kittie…I mean honestly Axl…come the fuck on.

  62. Ziv Frenkel says:

Obvious ripoff my ass, there are a trillion riffs that sound like that. this riff structure (half a bar palm-muted-jan-jan-jan half a bar hooky melodic fill) was invented in the fucking 80’s.

  63. DANNER says:

Lamb of God writes Kittie’s music.

  64. AutumnsWatchingEyes says:

I’m sorry but you guys are idiots…. the ones who say the riffs are copied off of LOG. Sure they are a little similar, but I would hardly call it a rip off.

I for one despise Lamb of God, love Testament, and suprisingly am VERY impressed with Kittie’s new album. Talk about a one-dimensional band who now play what I would describe as thrashy melodic metal. They are a dark band with some pretty dark lyrics. Their guitarist, who is goregous, plays solos that haven’t been heard before.

When I was chatting with the ladies, their influences ranged from Opeth, Carcass, Cephalic Carnage, Death, Acid Bath, and Isis all the way to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Zeppelin, Pantera, and Silverchair…. I’m fairly certain that their influences could have came from old school rock along with today’s heavy metal.. Not shit like Everytime I Die and wanna be ‘hardcore’ bands.

Big deal what the similarities are. They are musicians.
