NO SYL ON TDTP TOUR

In news that will only bum out people who have never heard Addicted, Ki, Ziltoid (the album, not the guy who leaves comments here telling us how bad we suck), or any number of other Devin Townsend projects that aren’t Strapping Young Lad, The Formerly Skulleted One has announced that he will not be playing any SYL material on his forthcoming tour with Between the Buried and Me, Cynic, and Scale The Summit.

And there isn’t much more to say than that. I love SYL as much as the next drunken ree-ree, but Townsend has plenty of other great albums from which to pull material, and I’m dying to hear stuff from the last few records that has never been performed live before. And since he’s not the headliner and I imagine his set time will therefore be a little shorter than some of us might like, it’s only natural that he’d want to concentrate on stuff he wasn’t out on the road playing for years and years prior to SYL’s demise.

Or, put more succinctly: even though some idiots will surely bitch and moan, this isn’t a big deal, and this tour is still gonna be awesome.

Addicted, which really is fantastic, comes out November 17 on InsideOut Music.

  1. Ziltoid says:

    Well, I’m right.

  2. Joe says:

Yet Ziltoid keeps coming back to this site that he thinks sucks. Go outside Ziltoid.

    • Ziltoid says:

This site is atrocious, but there’s something about it that makes me at least want to see how much worse it gets with each passing day. At the very least, regardless of the quality of artists mentioned on here, the site is entertaining enough for a read. No other blogs that I know of focus more on being an asshole than reporting news, so I’ll give MS credit for that.

  3. Definately be seeing regardless Jan. 24 in Chicago.

  4. Lee says:

I assumed this, but thanks for the official statement. Hope he plays some stuff from Infinity.

  5. I was expecting that, so no big news. I mean, the guy’s been on the road playing SYL stuff for a decade, he wouldn’t be taken seriously if he continued to play SYL stuff over his more recent solo stuff. I’ll probably be there in Montreal anyway, this show should be a good one. By the way, Ki is a fucking great album!

  6. Myke says:

I rather hear stuff his solo albums I just want to hear at least one song from terria and ocean machine but all his solo stuff is great I can’t wait addicted to come out i’m sure it will Rock my socks off

    • AEnema175 says:

Make that most of Terria and as much as possible of Ocean Machine plus a Ziltoid or two and a couple off the new albums and i will happy as a clam with the ability to walk and stab people in the eye with no regard for the law.

      • Lybrium says:

what about some synchestra my friend? Pixilate would sound epic live, and Anneke can do the female vocals on it, bonus!

  7. I figured long ago.

Heres a real deal for you… how about no BTBAM on my Devin Townsend tour?

  8. yougdosucksballs says:

DT looks like Tim Olyphant in Hitman now. Maybe he should audition for the sequel.

  9. Jimmy says:

Good. SYL is okay and all, but I’d rather hear him play the DTP stuff, especially when that’s what they’re playing under. It should have been obvious.

  10. SourDeez says:

I still can’t handle the fact that he now looks like the singer from Disturbed.

  11. Rob Kurkjian says:

Ok so who is headlining of its not Devin?

  12. Lybrium says:

Hooraaaaaay for Dev! Heeeey I’m lonely, Try and be on your way….on your way….

  13. Elpants says:

I don’t really care if he farted into a mic the whole time for this tour, the booking agent forgot the Northwest of the US exists.

  14. jackattack says:

I don’t know how it happened, through simple revelation or sonic maturation or something else, but I finally, FINALLY, figured Devin out… I ‘ve talked before about how overrated I thought he was… how annoying and pointless his lyrics in SYL are… and now I’m shamed to have to retract everything. Dude is a fucking genius. I’m jumping on the bandwagon… albeit… well, like 10 years too late.

  15. Strapping Young Lad says:

man… dev kicks so much ass. this tour is a dream come true, you guys have no idea…. its SOO… goOOD.

  16. Rik Powell says:

This doesn’t surprise me, in fact I would have been quite surprised if he did play any SYL.

  17. Facebook User says:

Fuck, I’d love to see that show. Devin Townsend followed by Between the Buried and Me would be awesome.

  18. SYL Townsend says:

I really hope something from ocean machine, but i would be more than fine with anything else. Even from the Ass-sordid Demos!

  19. Canvas Of Flesh says:

I’ll be attending the Louisville show! Hopefully BTBAM end up playing last so I can leave before they pollute my aural cavities. The other three bands are awesome though.

    • Jimmy says:

BTBAM > The rest. Have you even heard the last two albums? I dont see how you can like the other bands and not BTBAM. It baffles me.

    • stu1 says:

I really don’t know how much clearer or how many times this can be said:

      BTBAM ARE HEADLINING THIS TOUR.

  20. noobpotato says:

Would of been cool if he did open with ’syl’ off the first album, but no biggie, his solo stuffs awsome

  21. Justin Sane says:

well, if you wanna hear it, his new album is out there. i’ve listened to a few, its very pop metal…

    • Justin Sane says:

wow, this shit is pretty boring… i think the girl is a fine singer, and while say, one song like this would be cool on an album, it ends up being pretty blah. i think that supercrush song is cool when the choruses kick in…

  22. Jon Lewis says:

Just found the album today, love it! Can’t wait for this tour! I’ll see him too when he comes back headlining (hopefully)

  23. MetalMatt says:

It’d be cool if he played some Punky Brewster. I still can’t get into Ki. What’s wrong with me?
