PETER STEELE JOINS THE DAVE MUSTAINE CLUB

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 3:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

Thanks to Rob Pasbani from Metal Injection for bringing this interview with Type O Negative’s Peter Steele to our attention. If you skip to roughly the fifteen minute mark, Mr. Steele starts to talk about… God. As in, he is now Saved, or a Believer, or whatever you’d call it.

Now, if Peter Steele wants to believe in God, that’s his right and who the fuck am I to judge him? As long as he doesn’t start preaching at concerts, I really don’t care one way or the other. But I do think it’s funny that (as Rob pointed out) this man is famous, at least in part, for this song:

Also kinda funny: Type O Negative keyboardist is Jewish by birth.

Anyways, I guess we’ll see what kind of effect, if any, this has on Type O’s future. And how quickly Peter denounces those Playgirl photos he once posed for.

You mean to tell me that a guy named Josh Silver is Jewish? I don’t believe it.

  2. msv81 says:

What the hell is it with rockstars finding Jesus/God/(insert iconic Christian figure here)? Too many years of abusing the shit out of drugs, alcohol, hookers, and groupies has twisted their minds. I never liked Type-O-Negative so I couldn’t care less about this decision affecting Peter Steele’s music or not, it’s just weird to see all these heavy rockers suddenly turning Christian.

I’d like to see some rockstar say, “I’ve found Buddha!”, at least that would make this whole discovering religion thing a bit more interesting.

    • Joel Bailey says:

plenty of rockstars “find buddha” or krishna or whatever.. it’s probably the only thing that’s more cliched than finding traditional western religion.

    • Tyler says:

You can’t find “Buddha” because Buddha’s whole idea was based off a quote from Buddha himself; “I am awake, not God.” Therefore seeing how he is not an infinite God, he is just a human with some ideas (which correlate with the teachings of Jesus a majority of the time). So in the same aspect that I can’t find Abraham Lincoln, I can’t find Buddha. The reason you can say, “I found Jesus!” is because He stated something else that no other leader of any world religion stated. “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”- John 14:6. Basically if you look into the Greek and study the Scripture, you find that Jesus is saying that he is God. Which backs-up the idea of the Holy Trinity that many Jews tend to go against (also if you look at the first chapters of Genesis, it says “Let Us make this world.” which bluntly states there is a Trinity. Also the Hebrew word used for God [Elohim] is plural in Hebrew. Meaning three.). So Buddha’s teachings were just what they sound like. Teachings and that’s it. a philosophy and that’s it.

I saw Type O last year and Peter Steele was dressed up like a Catholic Priest, fit with a bible and pedestal. I figured it was a tounge and cheek sort of thing, but turns out he might have been serious. Still doesn’t explain the mid-set drunken rampage where he flew into a rage and destroyed the pedestal….The Lord works in mysterious ways I guess.

  4. Wonder if this means that we’ve heard our last of “Christian Woman”

  5. DeathMasqueRed says:

Nope, Christian Woman is still being played. I don’t think Peter will be the Dave Mustaine/Blackie Lawless type to eliminate songs from the setlist just because of subject matter. Well, he *might* have a problem with “It’s Never Enough”, considering one of the lines in it is “fuck you God”. I don’t think they played that much anyway.

  6. SeanN says:

He sounds very articulate and sincere, not like the asshole he’s been purported to be. A lot of people need some sort of crutch to overcome alcoholism. For some it’s chain smoking. For Pete it’s religion. Whatever. It doesn’t sound like the band’s breaking up or changing too much. I grew up listening to Type O Negative and hope they still possess some validity.

  7. ceth carter says:

If you actually watch the whole interview and dont just skip over most of it to find some God controversy,it is actually a very good and interesting interview and Peter Steele is very obviously in a better place in his life health wise and mentally right now. He looks and sounds like a new and refreshed person in that interview compared to what he has the last few years. He looked near dead the last few times i had seen pictures and videos of him. No matter what got him there its nice to see he is doing well now.

  8. SouthFL Infidel says:

I don’t think this is news…hasn’t it been known for a while that he is a Christian now? I’ve known it for a while and I’m only a casual fan (hardcore fan of the music, but casual with regards to knowledge of their personal lives). Dude hit a real rough patch in the last few years and had to do some time at Rykers Island. If finding God is helping him in any way, then good for him. Whether you believe in God/Christianity or not (I do), you can’t deny that just the FAITH in God has helped a lot of people who have fallen on hard times. More power to ya Pete, you guys are still one of the best bands (imo) either way.

And I don’t see the significance in Josh Silver being Jewish and Pete being a Christian. People like to stereotype Christians as jew-haters (and to be fair, plenty are) but most Christians support the Jews, as the Bible is pretty specific about that.

    • Beereded says:

+1. Not only that, but it seems Axl insinuates that just because someone is born Jewish, that person can’t become a Christian. Which I know has happened many many times. Birth does not determine your beliefs, neither does parents. You gotta break those holds/ chains over your life. And, omg Pete wrote a song about a saying by a dead philosopher. If you would’ve heard the stuff I said about God/Christianity/Jesus before I was saved, you would’ve thought that God would strike me down right then and there. And yeah, I don’t know if Pete is really giving himself over to Christianity, I don’t know if Dave Mustaine really has either.

  9. Joshie says:

You know, Steele sorta has a history with jokingly making dry comments like this…can’t tell if he’s joking here or not.

  10. Donno says:

,,,as the Bible is pretty specific about that…

Umm, you need to bone up on that:

“No One Comes to the Father Except through Me” John 14:1-11

    • SouthFL Infidel says:

I was referring to the whole “those who bless Israel will be blessed, those who curse Israel will be cursed” thing…I think it’s Genesis chapter 12 , can’t quite remember. Anyway, I wasn’t speaking in an Evengelical sense or anything to do with the Jewish people’s relationship with God. I was referring to the Christian person’s duty to treat Jews well.

Jesus was a Jew, last time I checked.

      • Donno says:

It’s called Cafeteria Christianity – choose that which confirms your belief, and discard that which repels you. Hey I’m an atheist, so it works for me – just accept that just about anything Jesus said is contradicted somewhere else in the Bible, which consists more than just the New Testament.

      • Masonic Wehrmacht says:

Jesus was non-existent, last time I checked.

        • Trux says:

          @ Masonic Wehrmacht..

i am just curious… where did you checked to say that Jesus was non-existent ??

damn……….that comment of your is utter ignorance…

          • Nate says:

Where does it say that he was real? ONE book? Last time I checked books could contain FICTIONAL STORIES.

            Also.

Jesus is a direct rip off of Horus. This casts further doubt upon his actual existence.

  11. attackmole says:

Yeah, Steele’s been Christian for a while now. He’s just not obnoxious about like Mustaine is, so it’s all cool.

If any of you guys have checked out the re-release of Bloody Kisses, there’s a big interview with the band in the liner notes where they talk about how a lot of em have real (pro-family is a word they throw around a bit) more conservative values. I’m not sure if Steele’s the only one in the band who does the God thing.

Whatever, they made some good albums, I’m not gonna make fun of it too much.

  12. vincent p says:

He’s been a re-converted Catholic for about 5 years now. He openly talks about it, and the irony of it.

  13. Kuranes says:

Between this interview and the Attack Attack! interview you posted recently, I think it’s safe to say that hardtimes.ca has the worst interviewers in the world.

  14. Michelle says:

So no more songs about Paganism?

  15. first post ever…..

Last time i saw type o 2-3 years ago, Peter was pale, emaciated, and drunk as shit. After about 2-3 songs of his mumbling, flailing, and shitty notes, he puked into his monitor and fell over. His gtr tech (whom he was lashing out on the entire time) comes over, picks him up off the ground, and he continues to “play”. He lasted another 3 songs before storming off. The gtr tech comes out, plays bass for another 2-3 songs, then they called it.

he literally puked in a monitor on stage….

and yet a friend of mine still sucked his dick after the show…

    weird.

  16. Dan says:

    That’s a cool interview. He’s a funny guy.

  17. Todd says:

“As long as he doesn’t start preaching at concerts, I really don’t care one way or the other.”

Take a listen to “These Three Things” on their latest album. Really fuckin’ preachy, that one. It’s got his standard sarcastic tone, but he seems sincere about the message (which is, in summary, anti-abortion, anti-Israel, and pro-Jesus). Excellent album, but I hit the skip button whenever this track comes up. If the music was better I might just try to ignore the lyrics, but it’s not one of their gems.

    • BlakMetallistKrieg says:

If he starts preaching at concerts, that’s cool to me. Like, metal is about doing whatever the fuck you love to do to the extreme, so if you’re all about satan and your band has a live show like Gorgoroth’s, that’s cool. But if your christian and you take your beliefs to the fullest, that’s cool too, I wanna see that. No one wants to see anyone half-assing their beliefs, that’s not metal.

  18. SourDeez says:

I find Christianity as ridiculous as the next guy, but if there’s ONE thing that Christianity is good for, it’s getting people off drugs. Pete Steele had a hideous cocaine problem, and then he got sober and made one of the most killer albums of his career. If “god” helped him do that, then cool. He’s not a dick about it. Plus, Jesus Christ looks like him.

  19. Sammy says:

Unlike with a far right wing politician, Christianity without the sanctimony is very refreshing.

  20. Reaper-X says:

I don’t think Peter has joined the Dave Mustaine club per se.

He seems rather levelheadded. In an interview, he said he basically went to church because it helped him get his mind together.

It doesn’t seem like he’s using it as an excuse to be an asshole. I mean, if religion is supposed to help a person find peace, depending on who you ask, then how come Dave can’t get over being dumped from Metallica after decades.

  21. nolavann says:

sorry my dawgs, but I simply CANNOT compare Peter Steele to DAVE fucking Mustaine. Axl youre fucking wrong on this one. He’s been this way for a while now this is nothing new…

  22. Hibernum says:

This is news to you? And you didn’t know Devin Townsend was in Vai’s band? What next? Recent discovery: Dave Mustaine once played in Metallica? Rob Halford is gay? Danzig got fat?

  23. Hibernum says:

Oh did you read the interview with Pete when he says he is a prophet that is aware of when the end of the world will be? You should post that (it isn’t plagarism if you link to it).

  24. Hibernum says:

Final comment: he denounced those playgirl pics years ago. Didn’t you hear I like Goils? Man I am this close to blogging about how much you suck.

  25. crapper says:

    wow… carnivore rocks balls.

  26. jefff says:

that’s cool that he is sober, being sober is a good thing but what’s god got to do with anything?? i’m sure it must of sucked being wasted all those years, but i just don’t understand the jesus christ thing, i don’t even think that’s a real person. hopefully type o neg. will get there shit together and come out with some more kick ass metal.

  27. reznik says:

He’s a devoted catholic now, he’s not like a holyroller or anything

  28. Choice Of Treason says:

Christianity is a hoax. THERE IS NO GOD. Should I repeat that, dumb metalheads? THERE IS NO GOD. Geddit? Religion is a tactic used by goobermints for CONTROL! Some twat said that he is an atheist but thinks religion is a good thing cuz it helps people get off “dwugs”. At least some “dwugs” helps people see beyond the lies of religion and goobermint. Drugs treat idiots like Peter Steele and Dave Mustaine bad for a reason. People who use drugs responsibly will continue to laugh at people like this. I am not religious cuz I believe in such blasphemous theories like evolution, the cosmic order and the astral body! I will say this with pride and confidence: I defy the Holy Spirit! Down with gods and grabbermint! I have NEVER had a problem with “dwugs”. I have had problems with the pooleesh! Fuck religion! Fuck government! At least no one in Morbid Angel or Immolation will ever sink so low! Now I know why I always thought Typo Positive’s music sucked. Hail Satan!

    • SourDeez says:

That was me, and I greatly enjoy using drugs responsibly. Particularly hallucinogens, for the exact mind-expanding effects that you describe. However, Steele was on cocaine, which is a vile substance that has absolutely NO potential to do anything besides ruin your life and make someone in a colorful suit rich. There’s really no such thing as responsible cocaine use, it catches up to EVERYONE. You can’t really say that coke helps you see the truth in anything…quite the opposite. Just like religion and “goobermint” it takes over the mind and makes you believe its lies. I’m also against the controlling nature of religion, but I’ve seen people whose lives were a complete wreck thanks to cocaine come back and get jobs and join society and become happy people because they found religion. And I’m not talking about rockstars. So that’s something positive for society: more happy people, less sniveling cokeheads. Still, religion is lame in general.

    • WankDeath43 says:

Your whole “Hail Satan” doesn’t really make sense… (to me at least) I thought satan was once an angel (one of the highest) cast down from heaven for his insurrection, be thats just in christianity, I have no idea within other religions. So, if there is no God or Gods, would there not be a Satan?

      • Nate says:

“Satan” means adversary in Latin. The idea of “satan” to a lot of people, is that he is the epitome of the anti-christian belief.

  29. onedummy says:

There are several books out about rockers finding Buddha.
    Hardcore Zen, Dharma Punks… etc.

  30. Jirky says:

I just saw Type O last Thursday night. They did indeed play “Christian Woman”, and there was no pro-christian ranting or preaching of any kind.

  31. slice two says:

this is seriously old news. peter “came out” as christian a few years ago, i think before dead again came out.

  32. d00shc00gr says:

Cool, I have one more reason to say “Type O Negative SUCKS!!!!”

  33. kb says:

This is REALLY old news. The last Type O Negative album had tons of Christian themes. Steele came out as a born again Christian YEARS AGO, DUDES!

  34. aga says:

    love you Peter!
    God Bless you!

  35. EastCoastSteff says:

No wonder he’s a fucking fatass now and royally fucked up the lyrics to Vhristian Woman in Worcester last month!

  36. O-positive says:

LEAVE HIM THE FUCK ALONE, GUYS. AT LEAST HE’S SOBER AND HE HAS A CHANCE TO HAVE A BETTER LIFE AND MAYBE WRITE SOME GOOD SONGS.

HE”S A GOOD PERSON AND HE’S DOING HIS BEST. CHRIST, YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE….
